Grand Forks Herald: 'What a success this is'

It was six years in the making and two years later than expected, but Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony for a $168 million canola plant marked a "fantastic day" for Kittson County, former state Rep. Dave Olin said.

Several local and state leaders spoke to a standing room only crowd at the Hallock City Hall on Tuesday, heralding the start of construction for Northstar Agri Industries' new canola seed crushing and processing facility located between Hallock and Kennedy, Minn., on U.S. Highway 75.

Thief River Falls Times: Franken Supports UAS Effort

Most people think of military applications when they hear discussions about unmanned aircraft systems, but potential civilian applications are expected to expand exponentially in the next six years. In fact, it is estimated that $1.6 billion will be spent in wages in the next six years.

WDAY: Sen. Franken: Tragedy will not keep politicians from meeting with constituents

The quick and short answer is 'no'. Franken says it's his job to meet with the people he's representing. He says the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will not stop him from doing the job he was elected to do.

Rep. Giffords was shot in the head, and a hospital spokesman calls the Democrat's outlook "optimistic." The man accused of shooting her and 19 others, 22-year old Jared Loughner, appeared in federal court today and was ordered held on bail.

Star Tribune: Franken: New food safety law will save lives

Jeff Almer acknowledges that his crusade to avenge his mother's death from eating tainted peanut butter probably will never be complete.

But the Savage man, who has made food safety a personal cause since his mother died two years ago, said one of his chief goals — a food safety bill signed into law by President Obama last week — is a start.

"Can anyone believe we trust the food on our plate with laws created 72 years ago?" said Almer, who has lobbied Congress for passage of the bill since his mother died. "I've met too many people who needed this legislation enacted years ago."
