I wanted people to understand what makes a dictator, how nations willingly follow a Strongman, and how quickly democracy can vanish while thousands cheer.(less)

Adams said that as he was defending the “bad guys” –the British soldiers who shot at some Boston townies in what became heralded as the Boston Massacre.

The first Moravia I have ever read since The Conformist many years ago. Published in 1944, a wonderful coming of age story. The seaside setting and theme --sons and mothers-- immediately conjure Ferrante's work.
