In November, my new title "Great Short Books: A Year of Reading--Briefly," will be published by Scribner. As I struggled though the pandemic lock down, I swapped "doom scrolling" for the insight and inspiration that come from fiction. But I focused on short books. The result is a compendium of 58 great short works, ranging from Voltaire to Colson Whitehead, and what I learned from them. It is a joyous celebration of reading.
