Christianity and Nonviolence (Protestant Libertarian Podcast)

I was a guest on The Protestant Libertarian Podcast to discuss Christian pacificism. There were some challenging theological topics covered that you’re sure to benefit from reflecting upon, regardless of which view you take.

Show notes:
In this episode I talk with the great Cody Cook about his brand-new article entitled How Do You Know a Christian, published at Plough, in which he argues that Christians should be characterized by non-violence. We discuss the how the writers of the Bible conceptualize non-violence, how the early church almost universally affirmed non-violence, self-defense, and pacifism. Cody also explains why the anabaptist tradition has always gotten this right, how anabaptist thought corresponds to libertarianism, why many protestant traditions are wrong about violence, and how this conversation relates to the theological debate about the relationship between faith and works.

This is a sermonette I preached at my local church where I explained the significance of the Lord’s Supper. In particular, I focused on the communal aspects of what it teaches us.

How Do You Know a Christian? (Plough)

Read here.

How do you know a Christian? Is there a way to tell who is and who isn’t? Do you quiz them on their beliefs to see how well they line up with the Nicene Creed? Do you ask them if they’ve invited Jesus into their hearts?
One answer is to check their behavior. If becoming united to Christ changes us, then one should expect to see those changes lived out in everyday life. A number of the Church Fathers suggested a test like this one, though the specific change they were looking for may come as a surprise…

PODCAST: Plugging back into the Matrix (LCI)

My friend Jacob took a 30 day media break, so I created a quiz for him about which insane news stories from the past month were real and which I made up.
