The words begin to feel forced, and I have to climb up the tree of inspiration to pluck them out of the ether. When this happens I realize (usually after a long walk) that my tale has taken a wrong turn.

At which point I go back to the place where it felt right and approach the story at a new angle. Wash, rince, reapeat, until it comes out clean.(less)
