Come Meet Darick Robertson In Annapolis!

Third Eye Faithful, we are totally excited to announce one of our biggest signings of the Summer with the arrival of Darick Robertson to Third Eye Comics this August! Darick is the legendary modern comics artist behind instant classics like TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE BOYS, and HAPPY! He’s done a ton of other excellent work as well, in fact, we’d be here all day if we ran through the list. Let me just say this: we’re honored to have the man as a guest at our store this Summer in anticipation of his brand new creator-owned series, BALLISTIC, from BLACK MASK STUDIOS, the publishers of the recent 12 REASONS TO DIE comic.

What’s Darick’s new project, BALLISTIC, all about? Imagine the cult movie genius of REPO MAN (the ’80s one!) distilled into a modern day heist story. A madcap sci-fi buddy adventure about a wanna-be bank robber and his best friend Gun, a drug-addicted, foul-mouthed, living gun, marks Darick Robertson’s return to the hard sci-fi worldbuilding of his classic TRANSMETROPOLITAN mixed with THE BOYS’ ultra-violence.

Darick will be signing at Third Eye Annapolis from 11AM-1PM on Saturday 8/17. We’ll have plenty of copies of all his works available, including his new series, BALLISTIC!

Ballistic #1 Reviews Are In, And They’re Overwhelmingly Positive!

“Ballistic is my favorite comic of 2013″ – Grant Morrison (Arkham Asylum, We3, The Invisibles)

REVIEWS

AIN’T IT COOL NEWS:

“I didn’t think it was possible to have my mind blown by a comic until I read BALLISTIC #1… BALLISTIC is the next big thing.”

COMICS BEAT:

“Very rarely have I ever wanted the next issue in a comic series so badly.”

COMIC BOOK BIN:

http://www.comicbookbin.com/Ballistic_1_review_001.html

“Somehow, it all ends up feeling like a harmonious collusion between Requiem for a Dream and Naked Lunch. It has all the beat earmarks of a Burroughs epic, but also the resounding emotionality needed to bring it back down to earth”

COMIC BOOKED:

“Flawless Victory!”

io9.com:

“After we read Ballistic, we were blown away not just by the insane creativity of the setting, but the detail — it’s a world so fully-realized it’s like writer Adam Egypt Mortimer and artist Darick Robertson are secretly living there… It will be one of the most fun, unique sci-fi comics of the year.”

BLOODY DISGUSTING:

http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3242412/5-skull-review-ballistic-1

““Ballistic” is one of the best premiere issues I’ve ever read. A true homerun on every level that is impossible to put down. Don’t miss this book…The entire thing feels very Cronenberg-esque, and is truly own of the most original takes on the future put to print. The tone is serious and funny at the same time.

“Butch’s journey is engaging and entertaining. The world is unlike anything else, and the art is nothing short of amazing. The tone is haunting and charming, and the book is irresistible.”

“Every meticulous detail of this world has been thought out. Mortimer and Robertson have gone to great lengths to create something unavailable anywhere else.  “

““Ballistic” gets everything right by explaining the world in an interesting fashion while showing how the world works. The main character is so engaging that the entire book is irresistible to put down. I’ve been singing this series’ praise ever since I got my eyes on this issue and I urge everyone to pick it up.”

GEEKSCAPE:

http://www.geekscape.net/geekscape-comics-reviews-ballistic-by-adam-egypt-mortimer-and-darick-robertson

“Ballistic ranks among the best premiere issues that I have read in a long time. The book is violent, irreverent, and completely absurd, and I can’t recall the last time I’ve experienced such a fantastic mixture of those three things.”

BIFF BAM BOP:

http://biffbampop.com/2013/07/08/exclusive-interview-andy-burns-goes-ballistic-with-writer-adam-egypt-mortimer/

“This tour de force is something pretty amazing–it’s entirely unique. How often do we get that in comics?”

GEEKS UNLEASHED:

http://www.geeksunleashed.me/2013/07/11/comic-of-the-week-10-07-2013-ballistic-1/

“Well this came out of nowhere. And it floored me. Ballistic #1 is an intelligent comic book rendered in brilliant, gruesome Technicolor, with plenty of healthy swearing and violence. It treads a fine balance between clever ideas and lowest-common denominator themes. It is one of the best new comics I have read this year and I strongly urge you to pick it up.”

COMIC EXECUTION:

http://www.destroythebrain.com/comics/comic-execution-711-sheltered-ballistic-ghosted

“The story and setting are equally intoxicating, charming you with a warmly familiar everyman narrator and his misadventures, accompanied by the witty repartee of Bang Bang the gun. Their interplay is one of the best things here in terms of character interaction”

“Warren Ellis didn’t have this much energy invested in his Transmetropolitan world. Can’t believe I’m saying that, but it’s true; “

“Ballistic is impossible. Robertson and Mortimer are two very different creative forces that’ve somehow managed to reconcile their differing perspectives of the story to create a comic unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. It has to be seen to be believed.”

COMICS BEAT:

“One comic in particular this year was a complete shock to the system. Ladies, gentlemen – I give you Ballistic! … FUCK YES!”

“I was overcome with a passionate love for the strange little comic”

COMICS BASTARDS:

FAMOUS MONSTERS:

http://famousmonsters.com/reviews/comic-review-ballistic-1/

“It’s both terrifically disturbing and scientifically fascinating in its implications. “

” it’s all visceral and absolutely pulsating with life—from a futuristic brain-bong to a spider silk webshooter formed from Gun’s green barf. Sound nuts? Oh, it is. In the best possible way.”

BALLISTIC #1 LAUNCHES!

Cover to Ballistic Issue One,

In STORES NOW!

Ballistic Numer One Splash

Splash Page to Ballistic #1

Ballistic issue One (of Five) debuted July 10th, 2013 to strong sales and great reviews!

Casey Gilley from CBR aptly described the book:

“Meet Butch, a smirking, steely-eyed criminal with perfect stubble and a pompadour that would make Morrissey jealous. Well… sort of. He’s not exactly a criminal — not yet — but he’s going to rob a bank any day now, promise. Until he hatches the perfect heist, he’s working as the best air conditioner repairman in Repo City State, a reclaimed trash island oasis that thousands of other criminal wannabes call home. Butch’s best friend and trusty weapon is Gun, a raunchy, genetically modified killing machine who has what it takes to help Butch become the ultimate bad-guy. Well… sort of. With Gun’s unpredictable mood swings and recreational drug use, there’s no telling when he’s going to shoot blanks. Between his fickle firearm, a vengeful cartel hungry for bone marrow and a robbery gone wrong, Butch might just go “Ballistic.”

And Mark L. Miller of “Ain’t It Cool News” had this to say:

“Fans of TRANSMETROPOLITAN will want to pounce on this. Fans of Cronenbergian flesh-tech will want to mainline this stuff. Fans of Grant Morrisonian drug dreams and William S. Burrows beat poetry will fiend for this shit. I’m telling you, get out there and pick up a copy of BALLISTIC now, today, because I guarantee stores didn’t know what kind of cool they were ordering and will only find out when it’s too late, and you’ll be standing there like a junkie on the street crying because you didn’t listen to me. BALLISTIC is the next big thing. You’ve been warned. Now go, buy it and inject it into your brains while I go back for another hit.”

To top it all off, Grant Morrison says it’s his “Favorite Comic Of 2013″

Rock God Akira The Don, created a theme song to launch the book and you can check it out here!

Happy! reviews for issue #1

The early reviews are in, and the fans are Happy!

“Darick Robertson is the perfect partner in crime for this project. .. [..] a new level of filthy that hasn’t been seen since his time on Transmetropolitan.”

http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles...

“Robertson is drawing with the versatility and passion of an artist who’s still out to make a name for himself. He’s drawing like he hasn’t already done pencils on ground-breaking, genre defining comics. He’s drawing like an artist who’s had all the rest he needs and is now back and ready to work. And are we ever ready to have him back.”

CBR TV: Darick Robertson discusses “HAPPY,” “OLIVER”

CBR Reports :

Darick Robertson, artist of “The Boys” and “Transmetropolitan,” stopped by the CBR Yacht at Comic-Con International in San Diego 2012 to talk about his upcoming creator-owned projects coming up at Image Comics, including “Happy” written by Grant Morrison.

“It’s a Christmas story, but it’s really dark and yet funny. In a wonderful Grant Morrison mixture, it’s sort of ‘Sin City’ meets ‘It’s A Wonderful Life,’” Robertson told CBR. “It’s about a ex-cop named Nick Sachs who’s now a hit man and really just a bottom-level human being having the weirdest day of his life. It involves a little blue horse named Happy. It’s sort of like the less you know the better. It’s strangely in my wheelhouse and yet, stuff I haven’t had a chance to draw before.”

Robertson also spoke about his other Image book, “Oliver” with “Book of Eli” writer/creator Gary Whitta, which came about shortly after he was contracted for “Happy” hanging out with Image publisher Eric Stephenson.

“['Oliver'] is a steampunk reinterpretation of the classic ‘Oliver Twist’ by Dickens with a completely original understory by Gary,” said Robertson. “It’s post-apocalyptic and yet full of really vibrant characters and a place for me to go crazy with my designs and work in a genre that I haven’t gotten to, but I love. I see steampunk in ‘Star Wars,’ I see steampunk in a lot of places people don’t see it. I think it’s been lingering around popular culture for a while.”

Robertson also shared the type of artist he thinks he is and revealed he hasn’t yet read “Transmetropolitan” all the way through and spoke about moving forward from “The Boys” and how he approaches comparing himself to other artists.

“I’m proud of what I’ve done, but I’m very excited about what I’m doing now,” he said. “I think ‘Happy’s’ going to represent a new watermark for what I can do as an artist, but I’ve learned in the last few years to stop comparing myself to others and focus on what I’m doing. That’s really all I can control.”
