Random round-up

Mimicking the format off another blog, once again: 1- Went jog/walking again on Friday and was frustrated. Could hardly do spats of up to 2min with out feeling like I wanted to go right back to bed. What's the matter with me? Why am I not improving? Am I ever going to be able to jog like a real grown up person? Then it hit me...it was Friday...I started this shin-dig on Saturday - I was in the process of completing my first week of this new venture. High expectations much? 2- Had a rejection ...

Is it gold plated?

Tis the season to be shopping and... I'm getting mine done before December, so help me. 1 - Post anything in December and people will be lucky to see it in February - the postal system gets clogged. 2 - This town gets clogged. You have no idea. I grew up in tourist central - I had no idea. The town needs the money. I know the town needs the business. But oh my, I want to start yelling, "The lemmings are coming, the lemmings are coming," and run. Last year we had a last minute incident - never...

Absent minded - or always working

Many parents talk about life as a constant multi-tasking juggling stunt. My brain is often one place while I'm doing something else - do I really need to be "fully focused" while hanging the laundry? - I think not. But it does become a habit. I was reading an interview Pamela Samuels Young (click here) and she said something that I recognised in myself: I also mull over my story a lot. I'm thinking about it in the shower, while I'm standing in line at the grocery story, during my 45-minute co...

First impressions (or, oh...reprint?)

I don't talk to my publisher very much. Um...or at all. I'm not famous, and to be fair, they didn't actually agree to publish me. I kind of tagged along with a sale of some very profitable text books (which are not me). I tell you this not to slam them, but to explain why I am so clueless. Clueless as in, why I end up learning such interesting tidbits about myself by way of buying my own book and Dr Google. To explain, when I was originally published I received ten complimentary copies, which...

New Short Stories!

I finished reading this on Sunday and had to blog about it now: Touch: Stories of Contact by South African Writers edited by Karina Magdalena Szczurek SA The book is very new, so hopefully its distribution will expand. All royalties are being donated to the Treatment Action Campaign which fights Aids / HIV. This is a sensual and diverse collection of short-stories from twenty-two South African authors, including: Andrew Brink, Nadine Gordimer and Anne Landsman who have already been featured o...

Its not beginning to look like Christmas

Awhile back, when things were rather serious with the man who would later be called husband, but wasn't yet - we were at a small gathering and a man there, also American, was talking about how much he loved South Africa. He never wanted to live permanently in America again. And as he carried on about the infinite joys of living in Cape Town, I popped the question, "How's Christmas?" He stopped. Then with a tilt of his head, and, a bit of a sigh, he admitted, "It doesn't work. You never get us...

Its not begining to look like Christmas

Still jogging...

But not tomorrow. Kids and I do the pool thing on Monday and Wednesdays and that is enough physical chaos for me. And then...I decided to go read a book in my hammock. No, I didn't have a glass of wine - but I should have. Happy Sunday everyone!

Jogger envy

Husband's long arse work hours have resulted in same husband wanting to have time off when things at work slow (respectively speaking). I don't want to go on holiday. It is not that I don't enjoy doing new things, or seeing new places, but we've done that a lot. Nor, do I find going on holiday very restful. Days before we go on holiday I have to start: "Operation Go on Holiday." Try to get everything washed (when I already do laundry every day as it is), shop for food, get errands done and pa...

Is it really aid or trade

But before we get to that...did you see this photo? Oh my, husband has seen that look a time or two...and I know my father has from my mother...yeah...marriage...you love each other, but sometimes you imagine your spouse 6-feet under...with love, of course. Back to topic. Another little post on same webmag caught my eye. White (Wo)Man's Burden - beefing about aid to Africa and the negatives that come with it. Why do people try to paint the world black or white? This or that - is it because it...
