A link passed on to me re: Dave Mamet and his desire for DRAMA. (Yes, he likes caps.) Shadow and Act

Babywearing perspective

Two slings have been recalled. They had to be, they were made incorrectly. This is what is done when baby products are made incorrectly and harm children. Examples of links to other baby products that have been recalled are below: Crib recalls Stroller recalls Pacifier recalls Baby Formula recalls Baby Bottle recalls What is different, however, is that cribs (cots), strollers (pram / pushchair), pacifier (dummy), baby formula and bottles are mainstream. So while there is public outcry when a ...

You can buy "A Melktert Day"

I am my own worst publicist. Ahem. Some of you may recall that I had a short story published about a year ago titled, "A Melktert Day." It is a story I hold in a special place in my heart. Those that have read it, seem to have a special place for Mabel (main character), too. The problem was (is?), the magazine, while not impossible, is less easily obtained outside of South Africa. You can get copies of New Contrast sent abroad. But not everybody is keen to pay for shipping and so on. Thus, fo...

SpeakZA

SpeakZA: Bloggers for a free press...read about it then pass the message on. See further info from: David J. Smith Sentletse Diakanyo Sipho Hlongwane And lastly, a blog's take on what South African President Zuma thinks a free press looks like. This is not an issue for journalists alone. It is a starting point to censor. After this comes our books, our magazines, the words from our very mouths. I also know that many feel that blogs, or personal voices, have very little power. But the governme...

Google Library Court

My brain still doesn't understand the complexities that the Google Library has caused. Consequently, I don't have a firm opinion on the issue. But I do think it is an issue that requires careful thought and should be watched. It does trouble me how fast google is moving while the rest of us struggle to keep up - including laws. Great for them but... There are many nagging questions that start with but. The link below is from my morning paper. Interesting times. Skipping the revolution

Moxyland

Given I mentioned the book in my previous post, seemed like a as good as time as any to highlight it. Moxyland by Lauren Beukes USA, UK, RSA (Or embrace the spirit of the novel and buy the book from an independent) Due to the Americanization of global perspective, it is not common to read futuristic-techno-sci-fi reads set in Cape Town. Interesting to note which aspects of South African life Beukes kept in her vision of the future. I confess, this is not a genre I read in great quantities, bu...

If you write read this

I have received an email with a brilliant link: Stuff that authors (and editors) need to know Something I am going to be printing out and keeping. If you are one of my lurkers who is also considering pounding the keyboard soon - you need to read this, too. On a side note, while I have not read Zoo City (mentioned in the article) I have read Moxyland. The book zooms. Give it a try!

Another win for Freedom

Pssst - did you hear the news? Healthcare for US citizens just got a little bit better. Not brilliant. There is still a long road ahead. But this is a historic step forward towards the United States of America truly being "home of the free." Because people are not free if they don't have their health. Chronic conditions hold individuals hostage when unable to afford treatment. Because individuals are not free to make true choices if the big biz has their employees by the blood running through...

Not over till the...

Last post - a wee bit grumpy. But I'm fine. Honest. Have lovely guest over. Children ecstatic as guest pulled up driving a "noisy!" The rest of you probably call them motorcycles. My son has already informed guest that he (son) would like to go for a ride. Son has decided the guest can "push the buttons" but my son will steer. Funnily enough, guest hasn't taken my son up on that offer. I also went surfing yesterday. I'm actually improving. It feels great. I felt oh so cleaver when the waves t...

Two sides to every nation

Sometimes there is too much to blog. The mind is all over the place and slightly in a funk. Or in a great place. All at the same time. Like this morning, where I took my daughter out to have her hair cut and she was brilliant. And then we went out for ice cream and she was as sweet as the treat. People were complimenting my parenting (ha!) Then we bought Auntie S----- her birthday present and darling child was so good I impulsively bought her a bracelet (R7) that she was looking at with wide ...
