Funnily enough, I'm not drinking coffee
I'm tired. My daughter is bonkers; and, I am tired. I am tired of people telling me to "keep an eye on her." I am tired of people telling me "that you need to realise she has suffered a serious head injury." I know. Thank you. I know. I am also tired of people finding out she is out of the hospital saying: "Thank God she is okay," because she isn't. She isn't okay. She still has a cracked skull that needs to mend. She is still slightly concussed which needs to mend. She still has this ticking...

Finally home
Happy Mother's Day. It is one for me, because I am finally home. My six night holiday ended up being five nights of holiday, one night of hell + 2 nights in hospital. I'll save the holiday post for another time, perhaps. And the nitty gritty of it all is not especially important, and I'm too tired to tell it all again. But my daughter fell from a loft ladder at over 2meters up - celling height, to be precise, and hit her head on a throw rug which was over a tiled floor. In addition to being r...

Quarter Tones
South African literature has so many avenues to explore, but it is not often that one reads a book about a South African coming back post-apartheid. Yes, many South Africans returned after Freedom, but others were buying one-way tickets out of there, too; and, they continue to do so today. And, frankly, the issue is far more complex than simply fed up with one's country. But this is a debate for another day. The point is, the premise is interesting. I especially gravitated towards the novel d...

Water: Drink, swim, flush, yuck
I have scored brilliant parental points this week. Swimming. Yes, still taking my little darlings to swim lessons and we are making progress, and not. The not part is the fact that I am now in the water every lesson. There are pros to this, such as enjoying my time with my children. There are cons, such as my daughter still being so slow to warm to humans, even ones she has weekly contact with. But she is making progress. Both of them are. This is good. In fact, last lesson she not only "swit...

Yay! Huh? Ha! Hmmm
YAY! The Head phoned my daughter's preschool and personally apologised for the "misunderstanding" and the ad is going to run in the primary school's newsletter. This, of course, does not solve the root of the real problem - but it is a hopeful sign that change may be in the air. Huh? Can I just say that banking in this country totally sucks? Yes, I'd like to state that. Not that I haven't had my problems with British and American banks, I have. And some of those stories are really, really bad...

All-white nursery email update
I have had a reply to my email. It was very brief. In short, I will (at some point) be meeting the Head in person to discuss the matter. Given my schedule for the next few weeks (never mind his) this will not be a meeting in the immediate future. But the email is very polite. But, and maybe I am being cynical, I can't stop this nagging feeling that the reason the Head wants to meet in person is not because I am such a wonderful person that he wants to make sure we clear the air, but because...

What would you do?
What would you do? Would you look the other way? Would you keep your mouth shut? Moan about the situation on the blog, or would you push it? Because up till now I've been rather passive. I have a big mouth, but ... don't know. New person in a community comes waltzing in and rocks the boat - hmmm... Nothing is cut and dry. Life keeps teaching me this again and again. I can't stop asking people about this all-white nursery school. And let me tell you, I have talked to people who I thought I wou...

It's not about like vs dislike
It's about the fact that even in this modern age, I still print out most of my photographs, admittedly at a delayed speed. It's about the fact that I rarely buy a book for a one-night fling, but for a much deeper relationship. I shall be leaving for a six night holiday soon, and there is the dreaded packing dilemma of "Will I only need 1 book or six?" A Kindle (iPad) or whatever could easily fix this. Because if I did pack six, that's a lot of weight and space. But even if I owned a Kindle (I...

Getting tested
I'm having a day thinking about trends. Today's news Flash - President Zuma has revealed his HIV status. People appear to be undecided if this is good or not. Partly because the man has a rather dubious sexual history, including explaining he avoided contracting HIV after having sex with a HIV positive woman by taking a shower. No, boys and girls, showering does not kill viruses. HIV is a virus. So while some fear that this pronouncement will make many think, "I can mess around as much as the...

Spreading reading virus
Had a braai yesterday as an early birthday bash for the Husband. Consequently, people came over, as generally happens during a birthday bash, and some of our guests had never been before. I always wonder what our home looks like to new eyes. More pointedly, if they are going to run screaming from the house and go check that they had all their shots. You see, due to various factors until about two hours to party time our house looked like a health hazard. And in addition to being known as a ho...
