Tuesday evening update

You'll all just have to forgive me for the typos, I'm writing this while cramming my face before rushing back. We're still at the hospital. We could very well be at the hospital tomorrow night. She bounces off the bed, she climbs things - yet, she is very ill. Thursday - Sunday, all of that was nothing compared to now. The doctor admitted that he thought she had one of the lighter versions of the virus, but now it is obvious she's got a big one. I was changing nappies in the dark: no mean fea...

Update on Thing 2

Where were we... Thing 2 was doing brilliantly by Saturday afternoon and released. Sunday she was still a very happy child but we struggled to keep anything in her. Then this morning. Where our son came to get us and Thing 2 had deposited green goo in her cot. Thing 2 was not happy or active. She was floppy and kept nodding off. So I packed my bags under the assumption we would be re-admitted. I phoned and secured the first doctor's appt of the morning. Then I took a shower, Thing 2 wanted to...

Puke by any other name still stinks

Missed me? I miss normal life. And sleep. But I'm on break, which is important to be on during a puke bug spree because the speed people go through clothes accelerate. So I have to go home to do laundry. Oh...I haven't been home much.... Thursday afternoon while finishing a birthday cake for my son's class party (teacher took sympathy on summer baby never getting a class party...so happy 5 1/2) my daughter woke up from her nap crying. She isn't called Ms Grumpy for nothing. But this time, she...

Nothing to see here...

I've been up since 4am. Entire family has been determined to disrupt my sleep in one way or another for the past 3 weeks. And today, with little sleep and three classes of ball stuff to do...nothing much is going to come from this blog. Sooooooooooo.... I give you holiday snaps. Like this: Aw. They walked right past our car, happily. We were happy. Everybody seemed to be happy. Husband so confident that all were happy he photographed various aspects of this encounter - this being my fav. The ...

Whiplash

Another fast paced read that, like Moxyland, has gone beyond the apartheid era of literature and zoomed into the modern South Africa. The book reads like a gritty Pretty Woman and Juno. Yet the dark side of the story, complete with hard hitting truths about violence towards women, doesn't pull the story down into melancholy. It has humour and moments that make the heart smile. A perfect choice for readers who want a beach read with a likeable main character and enjoy cheering for the underdog...

Car maintenance is expensive

Even when under warranty: 1. It has to be taken to another city. 2. So they drop me off at the mall to wait. 3. And the mall has a real honest to goodness half-decent bookshop. Don't they look delicious, though? Yum!

So American

Cultural differences crop up in the craziest ways. Such as last weekend when I was in the hospital. I've gotten used to my stomping grounds, and most locals to me. Consequently my lack of Afrikaans is becoming less of an issue. But the hospital, I may as well have been in Italy. People kept forgetting to speak English. And during one tense moment a man, trying to talk over daughter's screaming, kept talking louder and louder every time he was reminded to speak English. He wasn't speaking Engl...

Because where does it end?

I read a library book yesterday while darling daughter snoozed next to me. Not a brilliant book. Good idea. Good plot. The writing - hmmm.... But the really irritating part about the book? Somebody had decided to take a personal stand and scribble out all that offended them. Specifically, any time a character took the Lord's name in vain. Drove me bananas. Please don't ever do this. Ever. Please. There are a few issues here which I wrote a big ol' rant about. But I'm going to try to cut back....
