"Surfing for Jesus" - behind the scenes

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read my short story. Thank you for all the comments and emails. See, publications like this run on shoe-string budgets. Therefore, there is no money for the writers. (Heck, many editors out there work for nothing, too. They do it out of love for the written word.) Thus, when we (the writers) get published in things like this, it is to add a feather to our cap. Another line to our CV. To help us someday (hopefully!) get our bigger works published...

"Surfing for Jesus" is Published!

Click here to read "Surfing for Jesus" If you click on my name underneath the story my bio pops up (but not my photo...so many jokes could be made from that). I actually have yet to read it online...I'm always nervous they've changed something for the worse. And I'm on such a high right now, I don't want anything to wreck it. Because I am thrilled to be published. And I'm thrilled you all can read it (if you want to, of course). I hope you enjoy! (And if you do...tell your friends.)

Gives "How Embarassing" A Twist

Oh, how I adore the internet. Oh, how grateful am I that it did not exist in its present form when I was a child. Hard enough to endure the daily grind without having my shame posted publicly on the world wide web. Camera phones. FB, Twitter, Youtube, and more...you can have your name (and face!) smeared in a matter of moments. Been on my mind a lot lately. Even this blog - will it come back to haunt me? Should I take it down? What about other things I've posted on other places? The more I pu...

I've been found!

The local library has "relocated" my book. They still need to cover it and such, but should be on the shelves of my local stomping ground in the next few weeks. Hopefully it won't sit on those shelves too much...

Okavango Gods

The book isn't set in South Africa, but the author lives in South Africa. Okavango Gods, by Anthony Fleischer. USA, UK, RSA (Or ask your local independent bookseller to get it for you!) This was given to me on Christmas 2008. This book bites and pinches while pulling you forward as fast as the water rips through the story's landscape. It is a dark and intriguing tale. People who enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver's Poison Wood Bible may want to give this a spin.

The positives of writers' groups

I am on holiday. At least I hope I am. We are in a drought. But drought might decide to break during our holiday. You see, I haven't agreed to go camping since the disastrous trip when my son was eighteen-months old. I made rules after this: 1 - I must not be pregnant. 2 - I must not be breastfeeding 3 - Child must be able to sleep through the night 6 out of 7 days a week. Finally - we're off and...well, we do need the rain. Oh, writing group. So...I finally went on Tuesday. Very nice. Lots...

Nodding your bum

You can shake your bootie. You can shake your finger. You can shake somebody's hand. And yes, you can shake your head to say 'no'. But rarely do people nod anything but their heads. Yet, on Monday when I finally tossed my draft to one of my writing bffs, I must have deleted a good 250 words of my novel simply by removing "his/her head." He nodded. She nodded. That is all you have to say. I know this. Yet, I did it a lot while pounding out my first draft. Let's see, 250 / 2 = 125...I wrote "He...

Ball-skills 2010

And we're back... A new year, and mostly new faces. Oh my goodness, some of these names are testing my tongue's flexibility. "Why's your name Mrs B?" "It's short for Mrs Beautement." Their eyes got so wide. Ha - see, it isn't only me who struggles with names. They all agreed that Mrs B worked for them! And a new year means...we start from the beginning - all over again. Everything has to be re-introduced, including how to stretch your right arm. We kept it very basic. Thankfully, since the ch...
