No crime here!
I made a rather unusual phone call to my estate agent this morning: to request that burglar bars are installed in two downstairs windows. This is an unusual request because: 1. Most of South Africa consider burglar bars de rigour. As in, "What kind of moron lives in a house with no burglar bars?!!?" Of course houses have burglar bars. 2. However, in this area it is the opposite, as in, "What kind of moron pays for burglar bars?" You see, I live in a very un-typical part of South Africa. Crime...

Goeiemore (Good Morning)
1. Thing 2 went back to school for the first time in 2 weeks. 2. It began to rain. When the damn level is at 11.5%, every drop is a blessing. 3. I seized the childless morning to head to the shops. Food is a useful item in people's lives. 4. I met a friend for coffee and had adult conversation. 5. I popped into Woolies for the more la-de-da items and while paying another employee walks buy and plopped those flowers you see at the top into my basket. "Thank you for shopping at Woolies," she sa...

Too busy?
Messing around with the blog. Do you like it like this? Would you prefer the info to make single columns on either side, putting the writing dead centre? Or, the way it was, and have all the links make a looooooooong snake down the side. This whole spacial arrangement thing is not my strong suit, so open to suggestions.

5K may not be very far
...but it is when your jogging has ground to a halt. Let me explain. Husband challenged me to a 5K funrun. I accepted, because it seemed like a very do-able goal. I upped my running in order to minimise embarrassment as funrun will have many funwalkers. I can handled being passed, but not by a walker. That's one embarrassment too many, thank you. I was optimistic. I managed to jog 4K and still think the world was a great place when I was done. I announced my 4K accomplishment to my small FB f...

Dalene Matthee
I have been working my way through Dalene Matthee's work. I have yet to be disappointed. They are all beautiful. From my understanding, most of her works are inspired by real life events. With the case of The Mulberry Forest and Pieternella the works of fiction are written within the tight framework of historical data. Everyone has their favourite. The most well known appears to be Fiela's Child. When I was on holiday in Knysna the owner of the BB's favourite was The Mulberry Forest, and its ...

Just a duvet and a lovely book
The whole family is enjoying quiet amusement that the healthiest of us all is the one that spent a good chunk of May as a hospital patient. Ex-hospital patient is currently telling everyone, "oom un'gry" about every five minutes, which is good as being "fashionably thin" is rather an unattractive look on a toddler. Well, to be perfectly honest, she is still extremely cute, but another pound or two is still desirable. Thankfully, the rest of us do not seem to be suffering from anything alarmin...

I think it is winter
Hospital life has its lulls. The void cannot always be filled with TV or books (although I try very hard to cram as many books into my life, believe me, I do). Thankfully, my carpal tunnel seems to be less of an issue and I could knit. Not very much, but it wasn't complicated knitting. Knitting I could drop in an instant: if a beep went off and my daughter's line needed to be straightened, throw up bucket needing to be grabbed, or to stem the flow of some crazy nappy leak. Knitting in the rou...

judgemental
Morning now and we have water - dirty water - but water. I'm pleased. The fix-it guys, like the guys that caused the problem in the first place, also used our property to squirt water down - shame my son wasn't awake, he'd love to see a river coursing past our home, through the laundry area, and out the drop and down the grass. Fun times! Daughter also seems to be functioning and drinking. She goes to a follow up appointment later today. I also seem to be functioning, although clumsily. I dro...

Home
Quick note to say we're home. Which is wonderful. The child is not well, but she is drinking and eating (well, sort of eating...but it is the drinking that's the main thing). Steady progress and should be able to "thrive" with out arm juice. In the meantime, some builder up the road hit a main, caused a mini-mudslide into my driveway, down the grass, into my laundry drying area and out the other side. Then, they cut off our water. Lovely. Thrilled to be home. Just wish I could have a shower.....
