Fan Mail *Swoon*
Just to be clear - I'm the fan, I'm the one swooning, not the other way around. I went to the post office today and...OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I am just so excited. Phoned Husband immediately. And...I couldn't wait for tomorrow's post - I had to tell you NOW! Confused? - I'll back up.... Remember this post? Okay, probably not. Right - quick recap - I highlighted Elections & Erections by Pieter Dirk-Uys because: 1 - I adore him 2 - His book is mentioned in my book. And I had always wanted to say a l...

High Low In-between now found
Imraan Coovadia's High Low In-between is a book I've been meaning to highlight for sometime. But the delay isn't my fault. Honest. I put off blogging about it because I wanted to take a picture for the blog, but book had vanished. Turns out the book had been sucked into the void which is pictured to the right ---> Husband's book pile. It is the overflow of what does not fit in, or on, the bedside table. The scary part is, he is part way through a fair chunk of those book s. Sure, there are so...

Motherverse: What Matters Most
Motherverse, the first publication to ever print a shorter work of mine, appears to be gone. I keep trying to load up their website without success. The signs were there, given they'd stopped accepting submissions sometime last year. Motherverse, may you rest in peace. I loved the magazine, not only for its celebration of motherhood, but for acknowledging that mother's still had a brain, even if we were covered in spit-up, baby-poo and hadn't slept in a week (or 15 months). They also brought ...

Self publishing is like sky diving
I confess, I never quite thought of it like that, but there you go. John Vlismas clearly has a way with analogies...or tangents. Enjoy reading Writing is hard, by J Vlismas. Happy Father's Day.

I'm not over it
I thought I'd grown up a bit. Matured enough to stop yelling at the ref, blaming the ref. Reached a point where I realise that life is full of bad calls, but it's how you play through them (in sport and in life) that makes the difference. Like the SA game that-we-shall-not-speak- of: I didn't exactly see eye-to-eye with some of what happened, but shrugged. I am flaming furious! What on earth happened tonight? WHAT WAS THAT? I've watched the clip, and I watched a panel on SA Super Sport watchi...

Who's Bavaria?
I'd never heard of them. Didn't think twice about women wearing orange, which was a team colour - Yes? Or was I confused? - Was a wee bit jealous they managed to dress as they did: A - Without freezing to death. B - Pulling off a look I'd look utter kak in. I know Fifa has to protect the brands that paid for advertising. But it seems the stunt went over the average consumer's head. That is, until women, lots and lots of young women, were arrested. We're all watching now . . . Suddenly there a...

Random Thursday
1. Bafana Bafana Argh! Now we shall not speak of last night again. 2. Snow!!! Okay, my actual sea level town only experienced a touch of fluff-dust that didn't stick. Mostly been freezing arse cold rain. But still - Snow!!!! The mountains have been covered in the white stuff. "YAY! Snow!" I smile at my son. Snow is always exciting for children, especially South African ones. "The dam will be filled!" ? "No more drought - it's snowing!" ?? "The snow on the mountains, mummy. It will melt and fi...

Defence
Was anybody else curious to see the Brazil vs Korean game simply due to the fact that the Koreans were...how do I put this tactfully? ... they'd been let out. (Not really tactful, sorry). I confess to know very little about the Koreans up North. What I do know starts making China look like roaring liberals. But last night, there they were, the lowest ranked team to ever participate in the World Cup (I believe) and they were fighting Brazil - number 1. First thing that caught me off guard - a ...

Home Away
The World Cup is here and to celebrate the fact that this is a world event, I bring you a South African collection of short stories that are set in twenty-four cities located elsewhere on planet earth: Home Away, edited by Louis Greenberg. With twenty-four cities and twenty-four authors, the stories are as varied as the places and people that wrote them. And with any such collection, the quality varies, but there was not one story I did not enjoy. What was truly intriguing about the collectio...

Do it our way
Who would have thought a horn would be bring out the worst in so many people? Specifically: The vuvuzela! I am watching the rest of the world debate this instrument with horror. Not all South Africans love it, admittedly. But that isn't really the issue. The issue tends to go like this: Hi! We're here. We don't like how your fans celebrate football /soccer so you must change. Sure, there is this saying that goes "When in Rome..." but we like everything to be the same. This is not the same. Th...
