Writers must remember to BREATHE

In a rash moment of sensible madness, I took my arse to the physio, made an appointment and actually pitched up for it - today. I was a bit nervous. Ready for the woman to laugh in my face and tell me there was nothing at all she could do for me. Instead, she did nothing of the sort. In fact, found the fact that somebody with my type of shoulder problems now having wrist problems 'not surprising at all.' Nor did she threaten to toss me back into the brace full time and put me on a slew of...

Where I use the word 'schadenfreude'

Husband is back. This is very good. Although to be honest, it was easier to have him GONE rather than have him home doing his weird arse schedule of late. But weird arse schedule appears to be over for the time being. So he is back. Rather humorous. Husband is built for running. He has done such things as the Two Oceans Marathon before and thought it was great. He is one of those people who can stop running for ages and then one day just decide he needs to run and 4K later be sweaty, but content. I am...

I'm in a meeting

Last Tuesday Thing 1 stood on stage and recited a comedic poem for Eisteddfod. As I discovered two years ago, Eisteddfod is a wee bit of a big deal around here. Despite the chaos of our current lives Husband moved heaven and earth to break out of work mid-meetings to come. However, he couldn't stay for the whole bloody thing, and thus, when Thing 1 was done (he did very well) we slipped out, which is kind of tacky, but the teachers and head said they understood - we both had meetings. Felt kind of guilty telling them we BOTH...

Memoir the new folklore?

Kate Farrell has a two part interview on Youtube via writingthroughlife.com where she discusses how Wisdom Has a Voice came into being. I found this comment of particular interest: as the cultural context for traditional folklore fragmented, I slowly began to understand that "memoir" was the new folklore. And while the function of traditional folktales was to transmit a cultural truth using metaphor and archetype, the personal narrative as the modern folktale is the same: to tell a truth based on a real experience, a meaningful story. Love to hear your thoughts on that idea. Please not there is a...

And now back to writing - Memoir

Right. Write. Where are we. Oh yes, a book is coming out in September, which I have already told you about: Wisdom Has a Voice. Yes, the ebook is already out, but for those of you that like hard bound (hey - I do, and I own a kindle) you have less than a month till its release. (I know I once said October, but that has changed - for the better.) In the meantime, the editor, Kate Farrell, has written a piece about memoir writing which encompasses subjects such as editing and tips on making your submission more attractive...

From the UK to RSA.

Fiona Snyckers posted a link to Penny Red's Post: Panic on the streets. It is about the London (and now more) riots. It is one of the best pieces I've read on the subject thus far. Perhaps because the quote she cites in her article speaks to much of what I've wondered about since I heard about the chaos: In one NBC report, a young man in Tottenham was asked if rioting really achieved anything: "Yes," said the young man. "You wouldn't be talking to me now if we didn't riot, would you?" "Two months ago we marched to Scotland...

Then again, perhaps I will

Husband informed me he had no time ... Which is true, he doesn't. But he has been informed if the plant dies, it is fault. Then Husband 'gave' me a section of the garden. I thought I'd begin by weeding, which was easy peasy. Then I stuck a fork in it - gah! Roots galore. I spent three hours essentially playing tug o' war and thought I had done a great job. I piled the Things into the car; we went to the nursery; I showed the man my list of 'plants that like shade' and bought most of the...
