God bless google
Last night I came very close to being granted the privilege of travelling alone with a 3yr old and 6 yr old. Nice. I am sure that would have been good times. I have flown with a 3month old by myself, and an 13month old and an almost 2 yr old - but only 1 kid and said kid was small enough to strap to my back and not look at 'em when life got THAT bad. (It was often THAT bad.) Let this be a public service announcement to any other non-American planning to visit the USofA and thinks...

Packing my life away
Tomorrow we drive to Cape Town. Saturday we fly. Then my mind is obliterated and have no idea what happens next. Very hard to convey to people that while I am looking forward to seeing family and friends, I have zero interest in this whole travelling thing. Done it far too many times and my enthusiasm has been squelched. Nor do I like being away from my home this long. I mean, it is good. We will do fun things. But I prefer holidays in slightly smaller chunks. But it makes sense given what this 'road trip' costs and the...

Mossel Bay Chain Gangs
As many of you know, a number of children from Mossel Bay took part in the Short Story Day South festivities by creating chain stories. I finally have them ALL up on the official web pages. Please enjoy the sample below and click on the links to read the rest! (Psst, try to vote or leave comments if you can. Little minds blossum under constructive praise.) MILKWOOD GRADE 1 Story 2 One day there was a girl who had a birthday. She put her face in the cake. (Talitha) She got into big trouble. (Damien) To feel better she went...

Here we go!
21st of June - the shortest day of the year for people living on the 'lower' half of the globe. Which means today is: Short Story Day South. I think my local paper is excited. They printed the article two weeks running. Wowzer. The children at Milkwood primary are also excited, their stories are up! Click here to read! Hopefully I'll have stories from the library workshop up sometime tonight (my night). I love to plan ahead, but given we haven't had the workshop yet, I have no idea what is going to fly out of those children's mouths. (But...

Wisdom Has A Voice - ebook out now
The ebook for Wisdom Has a Voice, which features my essay 'Birds of Promise,' is out now. The paper version, complete with photographs and a far better layout, will be available in October. But for those who love your e-readers, or live outside of the United States, the ebook may be the one for you. For those that would like to know a wee bit more about my piece, please click here to see my post on BookLive.

Remember the werewolf?
The Edge of Things' attempt to work together to create a chain story is out. What is that saying? 'Too many chefs in the kitchen spoil the pot?' Although I wouldn't say the pot is spoilt. It is rather hilarious! Also, it is wonderful illustration of how many ways an idea can get twisted around. In short: endless. So the next time you get writer's block, experiment. Happy Father's Day for those of you to whom this day applies. Oh - and to my Dad - Love you! While I am bringing your present in my suitcase, I've booked your...

This just may be my first interview
On Litnet Janet van Eeden interviewed Arja Salafranca editor of The Edge of Things about the book and Arja's story. In addition, other writers in the anthology were asked two questions: a) What inspired the short story we wrote; and b) Why do we write short stories? As you can imagine, my bit is very small. It also reads slightly out of context because I, being new to this, answered this as if filling out a school paper. But hey, it was an experience and I thought it was fun. Do have a look. (Scroll waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down for my bit....
