A bitter melon is probably the last vegetable that would occur to cook for dinner tonight. But it is a pleasure worth acquiring. This knotty green vegetable, also called bitter gourd or balsam pear, can be a great source of nutrients that do everything from building stronger bones to improving immunity, and possibly even protecting against cancer. Here is a summary of all its benefits.
1. Keeps Your Diabetes Under Control:
If you have a family history of diabetes or have already been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, bitter melon can really help. It is believed that bitter melon extract is structurally similar to animal insulin and may reduce blood glucose levels in someone who has type 2 diabetes. In one study, patients who consumed 2,000 mg of bitter melon daily saw that levels of fructosamine decreased significantly, along with a “modest hypoglycemic effect.” What you should remember, however, is that bitter melon cannot be a substitute for the medications you take.
2. Help with Eye Health:
The Vitamin A is a nutrient that your eyes adore. In addition to helping prevent the development of cataracts or even night blindness, this vitamin promotes good eye health in general. It is needed for normal functioning of the cornea and conjunctival membranes. A typical serving of bitter melon gives you almost a third of the vitamin A recommended for your body daily.
3. Strengthens Bones and Prevents Osteoporosis:
Bitter melon contains high levels of vitamin K, an essential nutrient for bone formation. Without this vitamin, all the calcium you consume (of which bitter melon is again a good source) will not be worth much, because it works together with this vitamin to improve your bone density. You could easily protect yourself from osteoporosis and osteoarthritis if you have enough of this vitamin, and even less likely to have a fracture.

4. He Loves His Liver:
Bitter melon is taken as a “tonic for the liver” due to its ability to aid digestion, purify the blood and detoxify the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, bitter substances such as bitter gourd can help eliminate excess heat in your body, act as a natural detoxification and restore balance.
“Vitamin K in bitter melon also reduces the risk of bleeding related to liver disease”.
What is attracting more followers to this vegetable is its role in reducing triglyceride levels in your liver. Animal studies on multiple varieties of bitter melon have found that they all impact liver triglyceride levels to varying degrees.
5. He Is an Ally in His Fight Against Cancer:
Bitter melon also offers hope to those who have cancer. Different parts of bitter melon, from seed extracts to pericarp and placenta, have been used in research against leukemia. These studies have found that plant extracts have the potential to cause apoptosis or cell death of HL60 leukemia cells in humans. Studies that explore the impact of bitter melon extract treatment on breast cancer cells have found that the remedy significantly reduces cell proliferation. The extract also causes apoptotic cell death of these cancer cells, which makes it a good alternative therapy to consider along with medical treatment. Its effectiveness in stimulating apoptosis of cancer cells in the pancreas is especially encouraging, given the poor prognosis associated with this form of cancer.
6. Help You Lose Weight and Reduce Fat:
Studies have found that bitter melon can cut the accumulation of tissue fat in your body. This is the result of the ability of bitter melon to stimulate the breakdown of lipids or fats, while also inhibiting the synthesis of fatty acids or triglycerides, which makes it a good option for someone on a weight loss plan. If you are counting calories and trying to stay fit, there is more. Because bitter melon is not very caloric, you can get vitamins A, C, K and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium without consuming too many calories.

7. Build Immunity:
Bitter melon also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. The phenolic compounds gallic acid, catechin and caffeic acid in bitter melon are powerful antioxidants, making a portion of the vegetable immensely beneficial for its immunity. For people with diabetes, animal studies indicate that it could even help normalize the antioxidant state that would otherwise be affected. As one study found, the consumption of this pumpkin can help induce systemic and intestinal anti-inflammatory responses.

A glass of soda is not poison, but a can of cola a day is. The harmful effects of soft drinks go beyond weight gain and obesity. Soft drinks can cause diabetes, asthma, heart, liver and kidney disease, bone loss, tooth decay and cancer. Any soft drinks or bottled dairy products can be included in the “soft drinks” group, but usually indicate the retail sale of sweet, bubbly, soda or flavored soft drinks. Ironically, the label “contains no fruit” tells us that the drink has no nutritional content. However, more worrisome than the lack of nutrition is the high level of unhealthy ingredients in the average soda and the health risk they represent. So, exactly what health conditions does drinking soda give rise to? Here is the list.
1. Increases the Risk of Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome:
The high levels of sugar in the average drink cause an acute peak in your blood glucose level, and without helping you stay satiated for a long time. As a result, your body feels hungry and fatigue, triggering a vicious circle that negatively affects your waistline and increases your risk of type 2 diabetes.
“Drinking one or more sodas a day leads to a substantial weight gain and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in women”.
Also in men, taking one or two daily servings of such soft drinks increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (by 26%) and metabolic syndrome.
“Light” or “Zero” Soft Drinks can Cause you to Gain Weight
And no, “light” or “zero” soft drinks do not help. Contrary to what is advertised, light drinks can cause you to gain weight. Researchers believe that artificial sweeteners in soft drinks do not satisfy sweet tooth like normal sugar and, as a result, tend to look for more sugar. In addition, aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been under the scanner since the 1980s. Although experts have clarified it for now, aspartame has been implicated in cancer in some animal studies. Artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol can also cause irritable bowel syndrome.

2. Increases the Risk of Obesity in Children:
Because children enjoy drinking these sugary drinks (often replacing healthy foods), they are at greater risk. As one study indicates, decreasing soda intake can significantly reduce obesity in children and adolescents. Given that many of them have no nutritional benefits, these drinks have no place in the children’s diet. Caffeine in many of them can replace nutrient dense foods such as milk and suppress hunger in children.
3. Increases the Risk of Heart Disease:
Obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, all of which become more likely with the consumption of sugary drinks, are all markers of cardiovascular disease. When you are consuming too much sugar from unhealthy sources, you are less likely to eat fruits and vegetables rich in nutrients and fiber. This can lead to an imbalance in lipids and cause heart problems. In a study conducted for more than two decades, it was found that men who consumed soft drinks regularly had a 20% higher risk of having a heart attack.
4. Cause Dental Erosion:
There is another reason why excess sugar in the soda can erase smiles. The sugar in soft drinks, when absorbed by bacteria in the mouth, becomes an acid. And this acid attacks the tooth enamel and weakens it. Children and adolescents are especially susceptible to tooth decay due to their underdeveloped enamel. Are sugar-free sodas the solution? Unfortunately not. The damage caused to your teeth when you drink soft drinks is the same as consuming methamphetamine or cocaine. This is because in addition to sugar, sodas also contain citric acid and phosphoric acid as preservatives. This can sometimes make the drink highly acidic. As one study found, a certain type of glue had a pH of 2.3. These acids can wear tooth enamel and dentin, the bottom layer, from the moment they come into contact with the teeth. For occasional sodas, and even citrus juices, use a straw, have a quick drink and brush after 30 minutes.
5. It Leads to Osteoporosis and Bone Fractures:
Phosphoric acid is a food additive that is added to soft drinks to give them an acidic taste and also to inhibit the growth of microorganisms in a sugar-rich environment. Too much phosphate in the blood can intervene with an adequate calcium metabolism, essential for bone health. Caffeine can also interfere with mineral absorption. According to one study, daily consumption of cola caused osteoporosis and an increased risk of bone fractures in older women, possibly due to an imbalance in the proportion of calcium and phosphate. Interestingly, cola-free drinks showed no such effect. None of them affected bone mineral density in men. It is possible that smaller bones, less physical activity and hormonal changes put women at greater risk. Some of these other causes of bone loss or osteoporosis may also have played a role.

6. It Can Cause Kidney Problems:
In a study with 465 patients with chronic kidney disease and 467 healthy people, it was found that drinking two glasses of cola a day, but not drinks without a cola, increased the risk of kidney disease twice. This was attributed to phosphoric acid in the tails, which causes urinary disorders, kidney stones and chronic kidney disease.
7. May Cause Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease:
A common sweetener used in soft drinks is high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), made from corn starch. Unlike glucose, which can be broken down by the body’s cells, fructose can only be processed by the liver. When consumed in excess, it can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition that is also associated with high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Since HFCS, being cheaper than sugar, is commonly used to sweeten beverages, some research comes to attribute the obesity epidemic, in large part, to HFCS in soft drinks.
8. Increases the Risk of Cancer:
The colors and preservatives added in the drinks mean more problems for you. And this is a problem of the worst kind.
Cola Color: The caramel color of the trademark of the popular tails may be aesthetically pleasing, but its effects are purely perverse: 4-methylimidazole is a carcinogen found in the brown coloration of food. In a laboratory environment, the 4-methylimidazole causes cancer of the lung, liver and thyroid in mice.
Orange-flavored drinks: Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in cheerful orange drinks is known to react with sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in soda, to form benzene. Benzene has been found to be a carcinogen that damages bone marrow cells and causes blood cancer in animal studies.
Plastic bottles and aluminum cans: Plastics and cans used to pack soda are loaded with chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA), the infamous carcinogen also known to alter hormones and raise blood pressure.
9. Can Interrupt Sleep:
The caffeine found in their soft drinks is highly addictive and acts as a stimulant by increasing the production of adrenaline. That is good news when you need a stimulant to overcome that deadline at work or that gigantic house renovation project. But if it is a common feature, things get worse. When consumed in excess, caffeine can disrupt sleep and digestion. And playing with your dream triggers a chain of problems.
10. Cause Asthma and COPD:
A study in Australia found that consuming more than 500 ml of soda every day was associated with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). The researchers assumed that several factors could be at stake here. The high amount of sugar in soda can trigger allergies in the airways and cause inflammation. Soda preservatives such as nitrites, sulphites and sodium benzoate could make these symptoms worse. Phthalates in soda bottles are also related to asthma.
What Can You Drink Instead of Soda?
Water or infusion water: There is nothing better than H2O when it comes to replacing sugary sodas and bottled beverages. Add a little cucumber and lemon or a handful of pomegranate seeds to get some color and a subtle layer of flavor. Iced tea, coconut water or real fruit juice without added sugars are a healthy option if you want something a little tastier.
Soda water: If you can’t stop drinking those bubbles, drink sparkling water and a stream of lemon. Or try cutting the sugar in a canned or packaged juice by diluting it with carbonated water.
Probiotic teas: You can even try kombucha, a fermented tea that can cure your intestines and satisfy your sweet tooth. To get that probiotic punch, opt for a yogurt-based smoothie with some fresh fruit or honey.

10 Benefits of Intermittent Fasting for Skin and Health!

The intermittent fasting can simply be described as the process of abstaining from food and drink during one period. Each person has practiced this method of fasting. The time spent sleeping, for example, is a time when no food is ingested or digested. During this period, the body experiences positive psychological changes due to fasting. These benefits demonstrate the importance of fasting. In some studies, it was discovered that nighttime fasting could reduce specific metabolic biomarkers such as insulin and glucose. It is for this reason that doctors order patients to fast for a period of 8 to 12 hours before having a blood test. Other recent research studies show that almost all types of intermittent fasting are harmless both physically and mentally. Therefore, would fasting benefit human health more?
There are the Ten Reasons Why the Intermittent Fast is Recommended
1. Weight Loss:
Intermittent fasting to lose weight is perhaps the main reason why people recommend this method. The method works by letting the body take advantage of accumulated body fat stores. Fat provides fuel for the body when there is a shortage of food. Therefore, the body will begin to lose weight in a slow and steady process that can be very beneficial.

Fat provides fuel for the body when there is a shortage of food. Therefore, the body will begin to lose weight in a slow and steady process that can be very beneficial.
2. Function of the Brain:
In a study conducted in 2015, it was revealed that this fasting method has significant implications for brain health. Intermittent fasting stimulates the brain in different ways: it helps in the recovery of brain injuries or strokes, promotes neuronal growth and improves memory performance. In addition, it helps improve the cognitive function and quality of life of people living with diseases such as Alzheimer’s or
3. Skin Health:
A conventional method to treat acne is through diet. Therefore, using fasting as a way to control the skin should not come as a surprise. The technique offers a radiant and shiny skin. A person can identify foods that are sensitive to the skin by introducing one food at a time after fasting. Any changes will be noticed quickly. Apart from the skin, the method also positively affects the hair and nails.
4. Metabolic Impulse:
Part of the reason why intermittent fasting to lose weight is successful is the effect on the metabolism of fluctuation between dietary restriction and regular feeding. Fasting itself decreases metabolism. However, shorter fasting periods recommended by intermittent fasting increase the metabolism rate by up to fourteen percent, as reported by a study.
5. Insulin Sensitivity:
It is known that the use of fasting as a method to regulate health helps regulate insulin sensitivity. Fasting helps to tolerate carbohydrates better. After a constant starvation, the insulin present in the body directs cells to absorb glucose from the blood efficiently. With the greatest reduction in insulin resistance, the risk of type 2 diabetes is also reduced.
6. Oxidative Stress and Inflammation:
Oxidative stress causes aging and chronic diseases. When unstable molecules react with other molecules in the body, such as DNA and proteins, they damage them, causing oxidative stress. Studies show that fasting increases the body’s resistance to oxidative stress. The method also fights inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a cause of many diseases in the body.
7. Heart Health:
Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The risk factors are determined by the risk of an increase or decrease in heart disease. This fasting method improves many different risk factors, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, inflammatory markers and blood sugar levels. As a result, fasting reduces the risk of heart disease.

8. Real Hunger:
Regular eating habits prevent a person from experiencing hunger. Intermittent fasting helps regulate the body’s hormones that allow a person to experience real hunger. The more you fast, the more the body learns to control itself, thus releasing the correct hormones.
9. More Connection:
Many people feel more connected to life when they read, meditate, do yoga or martial arts. Because fasting ensures that there is no food in the digestive system, there is room for more energy in the body. Therefore, fasting gives the body a better feeling for both the physical and the conscious.
10. Longevity:
The ability to fast to prolong life is one of the most exciting discoveries of all. In one of the studies conducted in rats, life expectancy increased by up to 83 percent. The longevity process works in the same way as the calorie restriction process. Therefore, although it is not tested on humans, the possibilities are common among anti-aging crowds.
Conclusion:
With the benefits of fasting described, it makes sense to follow the plan immediately. After all, everyone wants to live a longer and healthier life: fasting may be the answer.

10 Natural Supplements for Common Skin Diseases!

If you suffer from skin diseases, you are probably familiar with the feeling of “I’ve tried everything and nothing seems to work.” Most of the skin care products on the market are of poor quality. In addition, many occur with only one goal in mind: to make a profit. Consider this: in terms of revenue, the skin care industry doubles the cosmetics business. In 2019, the skin care market will have grown more than 20 billion dollars in just five years. Keep this in mind the next time you think about spending more than 100 euros on some magic serum « Acne removal overnight».
Here is a little secret that these money hoarders will not tell you: that so-called secret formula often consists of nothing more than a few natural ingredients mixed together. Ok, it may be a little more complicated than that, but it’s fair to say that people can eliminate or prevent most skin conditions … without paying an arm and a leg. Here are the 10 Best Supplements for the Natural Treatment of Common Skin Diseases:
1. Raw Honey Antioxidants:
The honey raw (nothing of those things made!) Can do a little of everything. With antibacterial properties and a soothing texture, honey is perfect for reducing inflammation and healing cuts. Honey also attracts moisture to the skin, helping to “fill in” the thin layer around the eyes that tends to darken. Finally, honey contains alpha-hydroxy acid that helps exfoliate and moisturize the skin, making it the best natural anti-aging ingredient in the world.
2. Hydroxyacyte of the Citrus:
Like honey, citrus fruits contain hydroxy acid. Companies use hydroxy acid in their products for numerous reasons, including its firming effect on the skin. Lemon juice is commonly applied directly to the skin (that is, “topically”) to help promote the skin’s natural pigmentation. Topical application of citrus fruits, such as lemon and grapefruit, is an option; another is simply to eat more citrus fruits, which are packed with vitamin C – a powerful antioxidant that helps your skin look better.

3. Vitamin A1 (Retinol):
Also known as retinol, vitamin A1 is necessary to hydrate the skin. The vitamin A and its compounds are often called ‘retinoids’. Multiple studies demonstrate the effectiveness of topical retinoids in the treatment of acne and photoaging (aging by sun exposure). Excellent food sources of vitamin A include fortified dairy products, dark leafy vegetables, dark fruits and beef liver.
4. Bromelina and Papaína (De Piña Y Papaya):
Bromelain and papain are enzymes that act very similar to alpha hydroxy acids. They are found in fruits such as pineapple and papaya, these two enzymes work by stimulating the skin in addition to exfoliating dead skin cells. The result is skin that looks younger and healthier.
“Topically apply pineapple juice or homemade papaya to achieve the best results”.
5. Vitamin K:
Certain nutrients are critical for treating skin diseases and promoting skin health. One of these nutrients is vitamin K , which is believed to treat irritated skin, dark circles, discoloration of pigments, rosacea and spider veins. Excellent food sources of vitamin K include kale, kale, leafy vegetables and mustard seeds.
6. Ascorbic Acid (De La Guayaba):
The delicious guava fruit contains a whopping 120 milligrams of ascorbic acid, or vitamin C , which is more than twice the daily value recommended by the FDA. Vitamin C helps narrow the pores, giving the skin a firmer look and feel. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at the University of Oregon, vitamin C helps synthesize collagen, promote cellular health and reduce skin damage caused by the sun’s UV rays.
7. Licopen (of Tomatoes):
The Lycopene is a potent antioxidant and anti – inflammatory that helps protect skin from toxins such as environmental pollution. Do not look beyond a red tomato for a good dose. In addition to giving the tomato its beautiful red hue, lycopene helps protect the skin from UV radiation, fight acne breakouts and reduce redness and swelling. You can consume tomatoes for lycopene; you don’t have to apply it to your skin.

8. Water:
Although technically not a supplement, water is critical to treat skin conditions. Dry skin is often the result of a person who does not drink enough H2O. At the Mayo Clinic, men need about 15.5 cups of water a day, and women need about 11.5 cups.
You may need more water intake if you:
Live in a humid environment
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
Does intense exercise
Have a high temperature or fever
9. Copper:
Some claim that the copper peptide is the most effective skin regeneration element. Copper peptides help regenerate and rejuvenate the skin, stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, and eliminate free radicals. Multiple studies confirm the properties of skin softening and tissue formation of copper. Good sources of copper include avocados, beans and legumes, mushrooms, nuts, oysters and seeds.
10. Wing:
The Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), also known as the “anti-aging miracle” is perhaps the most powerful natural supplement for the skin. Topical application of ALA thickens the skin membranes, resulting in firmer and healthier skin. ALA also reduces swelling of the face, resulting in a much more youthful appearance. Finally, ALA helps regulate the production of nitric oxide, which controls blood flow to the skin.

The turmeric is a beloved spice of the Indian subcontinent. This spice of golden color is really invaluable, since it is not only used to add color and flavor to the curry, but it is a cooking remedy for almost everything, from the cold and cough to the healing of wounds and even the bites of insects Antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal , it is believed that turmeric also has anti-cancer properties that qualify it as a great aid to combat many diseases such as diabetes, allergies, Alzheimer’s disease, etc. The merit is mainly due to curcumin, a substance found in turmeric, which gives it the charming golden hue. Studies show that there is one more property that curcumin boasts of, thanks to which it is likely to place it at the top of the list of preferred spices: its property to lose weight.
Are you curious to know more? This is what we discovered.
Can Turmeric Help in Weight Loss?
A big YES, if the results of the investigation are something to consider. And there are many ways to make this happen. Read on to learn more.
Prevents the Development of Obesity and Helps Weight Loss:
Isn’t this exactly what we wanted to hear? Curcumin not only prevents being obese, but also helps you lose weight. The researchers say they have enough evidence to suggest that curcumin regulates lipid metabolism, which plays a fundamental role in the development of obesity. This is one of the reasons why turmeric is mentioned in the ingredient list of certain weight loss products.

Support Weight Loss Efforts Related to Diet:
If you are on a mission to lose a few kilos, you are already thinking about making some changes in your diet. Diet plays an important role in healthy weight loss. Various spices and herbs in the diet play a key role in making this happen. Turmeric is one of these spices that has proven effective.
“Indigestible carbohydrates in food can improve obesity”.
Turmeric has many of them that give turmeric its potential to burn fat. Turmeric also has dietary fiber and resistant starch that support the weight loss effort.
Turmeric can Turn White Adipose Tissues Brown:
Studies show that curcumin in turmeric is effective in promoting angiogenesisnecessary for the growth of adipose tissues. But why are we talking about creating adipose tissues, the tissues that store fat? Are we not looking for ways to lose fat? Well, that’s exactly where curcumin acts as a savior. We know the white adipose tissues that store fat. But research has shown that brown or BAT adipose tissues also exist in the human body and that they are a therapeutic target for obesity. The main task of these brown adipose tissues is to transfer energy from food to heat. When tissues are active, they burn high amounts of lipids and glucose. BAT is also an important site of thermogenesis or heat production in humans, another requirement for the body to burn fat.
The thermogenesis plays an important role in weight reduction. Although white adipose tissues store fat for later use as energy, it can go dark and become a source of releasing energy instead of storing it. This is where curcumin helps. It can raise levels of norepinephrine , a neurotransmitter that helps the process of darkening of white adipose tissues.
Prevents Fat Accumulation:
Curcumin also reduces the accumulation of fat in the body, especially visceral fat or fat around the body’s vital organs. A study in rats has shown that turmeric is effective in reducing obesity induced by high fat content, as well as the adverse effects of oxidative stress. Turmeric, taken together with sulfur is another way to prevent fat from accumulating in the body and reduce weight gain.
Work on Obesity-Related Inflammation:
Obesity in itself is bad enough. Add to it several other health complications such as inflammations that are considered the root cause of many chronic ailments to which it can lead. On the other hand, inflammation in the body can result in several metabolic disorders such as obesity. Curcumin is effective in counteracting both, studies suggest. Curcumin interacts directly with adipocytes, pancreatic cells, starry liver cells, macrophages and muscle cells. There, it suppresses the actions that lead to obesity. Curcumin is also effective in preventing various ailments related to obesity of the heart, kidneys, liver, etc.
Prevents Metabolic Syndrome:
The metabolic syndrome is one of the most frequent health conditions today. It is characterized by a constellation of the main risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The metabolic syndrome is characterized by the reduction of HDL cholesterol, the increase in triglycerides, the increase in blood pressure and plasma glucose, all of which are factors that contribute to obesity. Studies have shown that curcumin has the ability to prevent metabolic syndrome and obesity related to metabolic syndrome.

The Bombers wrap-up another year of disappointment
By Dr. Football and The Coach
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will complete the 2015 Canadian Football League season on Friday in Toronto.
For the 5-13 Bombers, the game means absolutely nothing in the standings. The team missed the playoffs after B.C. won last week and Friday night’s game is only of value for the coaching staff. Assuming, of course, that the current coaching staff will be back next season.

Bombers Coach Mike O’Shea (Photo by Jeff Miller)
It appears that head coach Mike O’Shea, who will be honored by the Argos for his playing days in Toronto at halftime, plans to start young Dominique Davis at quarterback.
“I just want to show that I know how to play this game, that I can go out there and get a win even though we’re eliminated from the playoffs,” Davis told reporters this week. “This game does mean a lot for guys that don’t get opportunities to play.”
True enough, and perhaps those guys can get something done on Friday night. There is very little doubt that the players who take the field for the Bombers on Friday will (a) play to win, (b) play to save their jobs, (c) play to impress other people in the league and (4) play for their own pride.
Whether that’s enough to beat a team preparing for the playoffs and playing in their own building is anybody’s guess, but if the Bombers have one thing going for them it’s that so few people watch the Argos anymore that there might be more Bomber fans in Toronto on Friday than Argos fans.
Meanwhile, our fearless prognosticators have a week left to save their seasons.
Last week, The Doc went 4-0 straight up (48-30) and 4-0 against the spread (45-32) while The Coach went 3-1 (44-34) straight up and 3-1 (41-36) against the spread.
This week, The Doc again writes our erudite observations while The Coach just continues to whine about all the penalties.
Remember, all games are on TSN. And as we remind you each and every week, for your own personal mental health, always keep the mute button handy. However, having said that, no matter how bad the game announcing is – and how much worse the half-time panel is – nothing on television is worse than the Rogers Sportsnet hockey team that was foisted on us on Wednesday night. That was nothing short of obnoxious. I must thank Shaw for my mute button.
Let’s take a close look at the final week of the 2015 regular season:
Friday Night

So much for the Matt Nichols Era. Dominique Davis will start for the Bombers.
Winnipeg (5-12) vs. Toronto (9-8)
Line – Toronto by 7
Toronto still has plenty to play for as they need this as a tune up for the playoffs. One has to wonder how much effort the Bombers will put into this after their bye week… The Coach says: I can’t imagine the Bombers have so little pride that they’ll get whipped in the final game of the year.
Dr. Football: Take Toronto to win and cover.
The Coach: Take Winnipeg and the points.
Saturday Afternoon
Hamilton (10-7) vs. Ottawa (11-6)
Line – Ottawa by 3 ½
Ottawa can’t afford to coast into the playoffs and will want the home playoff advantage with the win. Hamilton can’t and won’t win with their third or fourth string QB. The Coach says: Henry Burris makes his final bid for CFL Most Outstanding Player.
Dr. Football: Take Ottawa to win and cover.
The Coach: Take Ottawa to win and cover.
Saturday Night

Bo Levi Mitchell
Calgary (13-4) vs. B.C. (7-10)
Line – Calgary by 1
The Stamps can afford to sit their starters as they will meet the Lions in a game that matters next week on their own field. They should have an easy time both weeks. The Coach says: I don’t believe the Lions will roll over in their final home game of the year.
Dr. Football: Take Calgary to win and cover.
The Coach: Take B.C.
Sunday Afternoon
Saskatchewan (2-15) vs. Montreal (6-11)
Line – Montreal by 9
The Saskatchewan nightmare ends for 2015 but I think they’ll give the other last play team a run for their money. The Coach says: Perhaps the most irrelevant game in pro sports this week: two teams that can’t make the playoffs in a game that starts at the same time the NFL games start.
Dr. Football: Take Montreal to win but not cover.
The Coach: Take Montreal to win and cover.

Jets don’t quit, but lose in shootout
By Scott Taylor
You have to give the Winnipeg Jets a little credit. Despite losing 3-2 in a shootout in Ottawa on Thursday night, they certainly didn’t quit.
After falling behind 2-0, the Jets got a goal from Andrew Ladd, his fourth of the season, at the 17:19 mark of the second period and then another from Dustin Byfuglien (also his fourth of the year) at the 26 second mark – in a four-on-four situation – of the third to tie the game and send it to extra time.

Big save by Michael Hutchinson.
Nothing was settled during the rather exciting five-minute three-on-three circus, but in the shootout, Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson was beaten three straight times — by Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Mika Zibanejad — as Ottawa picked up the 3-2 win and the extra point.
Ryan and Cody Ceci scored for Ottawa in regulation time but there was little question that the star of the game was Ottawa goaltender Craig Anderson. This was a game that could have tilted in the Jets favor at any time. In fact, Bryan Little missed three perfect chances in regulation and another in overtime as the Jets outshot Ottawa 40-31 – 14-7 in the third period and 7-3 in overtime.
Byfuglien was the best player on the ice for the Jets. He had a goal, five hits and seven shots on goal in a whopping 28 minutes and four seconds of ice time.
Despite the loss, the Jets did pick up a point and finished the four-game road trip with a record of 2-1-1. Getting five points out of a possible eight on the road isn’t perfect but it’s not bad.

Bryan Little heads to the net.
Still, the Jets had so many glorious chances to not only win this game, but to bury the Senators early. This was a case of too many missed opportunities. Anderson was so good that after giving up a goal to Blake Wheeler in the shootout, he stopped Andrew Ladd and that’s all he had to do. His teammates beat Hutchinson three times and that was it.
The Jets fell(?) to 8-4-2 on the season and with 18 points are alone in third in the Central Division (Minnesota and Nashville, tied for fourth, have played three fewer games). Hutchinson, who suffered the OT loss, is now 4-1-1 on the season.
The Jets will return home and play a single game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Flyers at MTS centre at 6 p.m., before heading back out on the road for another four-game stint against Minnesota, Dallas, Nashville and St. Louis.

The Jets celebrate Andrew Ladd’s goal.

Burmistrov’s big goal gives Jets a win
By Scott Taylor
It was one of those plays that will be remembered fondly by Jets fans when Winnipeg is battling for a playoff spot in the dead of winter.

Alexander Burmistrov scores the winner.
Alexander Burmistrov took a chintzy holding the stick penalty at 15:47 of the third period and the Jets were forced to kill a penalty late in the game. They killed it, and right at the end of the two minutes, Burmistrov jumped out of the box, took a beautiful clearing pass from Bryan Little (it was as much a clear as a pass), skated up the ice against Toronto defenseman Jake Gardiner, passed it to Blake Wheeler who passed it right back to Burmistrov who banged it past Toronto’s James Reimer.
It turned out to be the winning goal in a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs and it salvaged a less-than-impressive effort against a less-than-fearsome opponent.
Granted, the Jets didn’t play a great hockey game in Toronto on Wednesday night, but they bounced back from a 5-1 shellacking in Montreal on Sunday to beat the Leafs in their own barn and improve their record to 8-4-1 this season. They are now 5-2-0 on the road.
The Leafs are now 2-8-2 on the season and 1-4-1 at home.
The Jets opened the scoring at 3:41 of the first period when Dustin Byfuglien beat Reimer with a quick shot from Mathieu Perreault and Toby Enstrom.
Toronto tied it at 8:22 on a power play as P.A. Parenteau beat Ondrej Pavelec, but the Jets went ahead again, just 37 seconds later, when Mark Scheifele fired one of his patented wristers into a gaping Toronto cage. Enstrom and Perreault again picked up the assists.

Winkler’s Byron Froese of the Leafs battles the Jets Jacob Trouba
The Leafs tied it in the second period when Leo Komarov beat Pavelec and this time it remained tied until Burmistrov scored his beauty at 17:55 of the third period, from Bryan Little and Wheeler.
Little scored his sixth goal of the year into an empty net at 19:34 of the final period to put the game away. Wheeler drew the assist, his 10th helper of the year.
“We got the job done tonight,” Little told Rogers Sportsnet. “It was good win after that game we played in Montreal. The guys kept working and we got a good break there at the end when we needed it. It was a good win.”
The Leafs were one-for-three on the power play while the Jets were zero-for-two. Pavelec made 26 saves to get the win while Reimer stopped 33 of the 36 shots he faced. Mark Stuart had three shots on goal, a team-high six hits and three blocked shots. Byfuglien, who had a goal and was plus two, had a team-high five shots, one hit and a team-high four blocked shots.
The Jets left right after the game for Ottawa. They’ll face the Senators in the nation’s capital on Thursday night at 6 p.m. on TSN 3.
