AUTHOR
BIO

S. K. Anthony is a writer, a reader and a
make-stuff-up-er who lives in New York with her husband and toddler twins. She
is a wine connoisseur, which just really means she knows she loves it, and a
caffeine addict. When she isn’t busy with her family she finds herself being
transported into the world of imagination. Well, either that or running away
from spiders…she is convinced they are out to get her!

EXCERPT:

I knew what I had to do. Orders were clear… KILL ON
CONTACT.

The thing is, it was Nick.

Before I knew what I was doing, I'd released my hold.
He got up and rubbed his mouth.

 “What
did I tell you about giving second chances?”

 “You won’t
hurt me,” I said.

“Honey, you are so wrong! I wouldn’t even blink an
eye, no pun intended,” he smiled. “Next time you won’t be so lucky. If you ever
get the chance again, take it.” He shoved me down and gave me a hard kick in
the ass. He started to leave but turned instead, his smile still plastered
across his scarred face. “If you can.”

I watched him leave and took a deep breath. I had to give
this some thought. I wondered if there was any excuse I could come up with that
the Organization would believe. I was going to be in so much trouble. And it
was possible they would even strip my abilities away. Although my job could be
mentally exhausting, I knew that, deep down, I couldn’t give up what made me,
me. I was a badass, I liked using my extensive training to bring down the bad
guys of the world, and what had I just done? I'd let the worst of them walk
away. I came into this Organization to serve a purpose, and I had never
regretted it. Until now.

Nick had taken advantage of all the knowledge he’d
gained when he was part of the Org. He was guilty of kidnapping, attacking
government buildings, killing a lot of people, and was considered enemy number
one for all Luminaries. But while I had no respect left for him, I couldn’t
hate him. Not like the rest of them did. This was the man with whom I had
exchanged wedding vows, the man who was once my whole world, and he had to be
taken down. But he still had enough power over me that I'd let him go. Stupid heart. I never wanted to be one
of those girls again, the ones who live for love or die for it. No, love no
longer had any place in my empty chest.

The problem was, I'd found
my heart staring at me through one eye, and I'd lost my shit.

One day, I
hope you know this.”

Interview with Jade Kerrion

Today's author interview features Jade Kerrion who's here to talk about how she got into writing and her latest novel, Perfection Challenged.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I started writing at the age of thirteen when my school essays were returned to me with a bunch of “A”s scrawled over the top. Teenagers are impressionable. Being much more impressionable than most, and believing that my teachers knew what they were doing, I figured I was destined to be a writer. It’s only taken me tens of thousands of hours of work since then to be halfway decent at writing (and I’m still learning each day), but one has to start somewhere.

How many books have you written?

I released Perfection Unleashed in June 2012. To date, I have published six books; I’ve just released Perfection Challenged, the conclusion of my seven-time award-winning Double Helix series. I have another novel, Eternal Night, a paranormal romance/fantasy set in the future (sounds odd, doesn’t it?), scheduled for release in 2013.

What was your journey to becoming an author like?

Rocky, as most journeys are. For a while, I explored traditional publishing, but then decided I was too much of a control freak to take to traditional publishing. I preferred having creative control over my writing, artistic control over my covers, and process control over my publishing schedules. In the end, self-publishing made the most sense for me. That said, I do have a foot in the door of traditional publishing. McSill Literary Agency represents Portuguese rights for my Double Helix series.

Is there anything specifically that helps you write better/inspires you?

I think I’m past the stage of needing inspiration; writing is more of a compulsion now. In general, I have a compulsive personality; people like me should never get exposed to alcohol, cigarettes, or recreational drugs—we’re easy prey. Years ago, computer gaming and writing used to go hand-in-hand for me. My characters from my computer games inspired my writing. Since then, however, my characters have taken on a life of their own and thus, I have been freed to happily obsess about them without needing the occasional computer gaming boost to sustain them.

What's the hardest part of writing for you?

The hardest part is stopping. After multiple rounds of self-editing, several weeks of working with my editor, and several rounds of proofreading, I have to put the manuscript away and say “done.” I think it is entirely possible to edit forever, but at some point, you have to stop and send the book out into the world.

Do you have a specific writing style?

Third person past tense? To be honest, I’m not sure I know the response to this question. Some people say my style is much like one author or another (which would be an interesting feat, considering I’ve never read some of those authors.) Broadly, I’d say that my style tends to resemble serials or movies. I grew up writing fan fiction, and got accustomed to writing sections of chapters that almost inevitably ended on a cliffhanger just because that’s the way fan fiction is usually consumed on online fan forums. In addition, I write the movie I see in my head, and not surprisingly, people have commented that reading my books is like watching a movie.

What are your favorite books and what genres do you prefer?

Science fiction and fantasy are my favorite genres to read and write. I’ve especially enjoyed the Belgariad and Mallorean series by David Eddings. To unwind, I settle down with a sweet and satisfying romance, preferably Nora Roberts. I also enjoy thrillers, especially some of Robert Ludlum’s novels.

What is some good advice/tips for young writers/aspiring unpublished authors?

Success in any new career takes time. Be patient. Invest in yourself—understand your strengths and weaknesses as a writer and be committed to continual learning and constant growth. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours of work to become an expert in a field. That’s approximately 5 years of full time 8-to-5 work, and you need to be prepared to make the investment of your time and resources for the long haul.

Advice for getting rid of writer's block?

I think writer’s block is just an excuse. Writing is a discipline, like going to school or work each day, like exercising and eating healthy. It’s just something to have to do because it’s an expectation for achieving your career goals as a writer. Maybe that particular scene isn’t working out the way you want, well, work on another, but work on something. Thomas Edison said it best, “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.” Today, you may not have the 1%, but you sure can muster up the 99% because that is under your control.

What would you be if you didn't become an author?

Well, I’m already several things. In addition to author, wife, and mother, I work full time in an education company in the area of business and learning strategy. I enjoy my job very much and don’t have any intention of quitting. People often ask how I find time to do everything I do. My response is always the same, “You’ll always manage to find time for the things that matter. Oh, and I don’t sleep much.”

Can you share some info about your current work with us?

#Excerpt WATERBORN by Kimberly James

Book Blurb:

“You don’t
have to choose. You can be both. The girl with the charm, the girl without.
They both suit you.”

Caris Harper lives a charmed life. Literally.

When her dad offers to take her to the Emerald coast of Florida for summer
vacation, Caris jumps at the chance. The chance to get answers to questions
she’s always been too afraid to ask. The chance to be normal. Isn’t that
what her dreams have been telling her, that here in the place of her
birth she can be normal? But from the first moment the wind caresses her
face and the sun touches her skin, the charm begins to fade, revealing a
girl Caris never knew existed, one that is anything but normal. The
long-buried Song that awakens is only the beginning of a transformation
that will challenge her ideas about loyalty and family.

Noah Jacobs is a waterbreather—a species of human fully adaptable to life
in the water. Like his older brother Jamie, Noah wants to prove they
can use their abilities and be heroes in service to their country. When a
simple mission goes wrong and Jamie goes missing, Noah exiles himself
to the Deep in a desperate search. MIA is a classification Noah is not
ready to accept. But instinct can’t be ignored. Not when he hears her
Song. Caris is not what he expects and Noah is determined to get her
out of his head. Instead he finds himself acting as her mentor and the
more time they spend together, the more Noah realizes he just wants Caris.

When a startling truth threatens their newly formed trust, Noah straddles
the line between love and obsession while Caris struggles to find a
balance between the girl she thought she was and the young woman she wants
to be.

EXCERPT:

All my life I wanted to be like my mother, hoped I was like
her. And now that I knew I was, the knowledge felt like a burden instead of a
blessing. A dream turned nightmare.

As I stood on the beach, a few yards away from where the foamy
waves rushed over the sand, I wished it weren’t true. Maybe my dad was wrong.
Maybe my mother had been wrong.

My hope was dashed as soon as the Song came, easy and
instinctive. Echoes built and swirled in my head like the breaking of so many
waves. I felt the purpose of this Song in a way I hadn’t felt before. I
recognized it for what it was now. What before had come as the result of
wayward thought, produced by uncontrolled feelings, now came with a violent
edge.

A command.

A part of me prayed he wouldn’t answer, that he wouldn’t
succumb to the power even as it seemed to fill me with a sense of vitality.

Minutes later, Noah emerged from the surf, surrounded by the
foamy break. He radiated power. Somewhere in the fog of my mind, I remembered
his strong arms wrapped around me as he wrestled me from the force that held me
to the bottom of the ocean. Was it because I knew what he was that I could see
him so clearly, or was it that he no longer had to hide that part of himself
from me? Did we all wear a charm of some sort? All I knew for sure was that no
mere human had eyes like that. No mere human moved with such graceful strength
as though he commanded the water itself.

Our eyes locked and held. We circled each other with wary
steps. This wasn’t the same boy I’d rescued from a pack of bullies. This boy
was wild, defiant and snarling silently, caught in this invisible trap of my
Song.

Where did we stand? Yesterday I would have said we were
friends. Now I didn’t know. He stopped an arms length away. Was he afraid to come
closer? No wonder he had looked at me with such animosity before. He didn’t
like it, having to come when I called. But despite that, despite what my dad
had told me about my real father hurting my mother, I couldn’t believe that
Noah would hurt me. I told him that day he’d rescued me from a pool of
horseshoe crabs that he wouldn’t hurt me and I still believed that. Maybe even
more now.

“Are you afraid of me now?” I would be lying if I said I didn’t
feel a sense of empowerment, a tiny thrill that he was here only because I’d
asked him to come with just a thought.

“No.” As if to prove it, he closed the space between us with
one long stride, eyes intent, bold as they raked over me. I had discarded my
dad’s t-shirt, eager to feel the wind on my skin, the spray from the surf. I
wore my bikini top and bottoms, but I might as well have been naked the way
Noah looked at me. Noah’s bare chest glistened with moisture and I had the
absurd thought to rub up against him, let that moisture soak into my skin.
Something must have shone on my face, some yearning I couldn’t name, because he
shook his head and tiny drops of water rained down on me. I massaged them into
my arms, let them drip down my face, craving more. They sang through my blood
and every nerve ending in my body responded. Even my scalp tingled.

His eyes scoured my face, questions swimming in the green
depths. But he also looked as if he too had no idea what happened next.

“How long have you known?” I couldn’t quite keep the edge out
of my voice. The accusation. I knew this wasn’t his fault. The fault lie with
my dad, but still, he had been keeping this from me. He should have told me.

“Since the first day I saw you.”

“The day behind the shops when Jax took your hair?” How had
they done it? Cornered and trapped him like that? It didn’t seem possible, even
though there had been three of them.

“No.” He averted his eyes. I watched his throat move as he
swallowed. “Before that.”

Realization dawned. My first night here, when the water grabbed
at me. I remembered the swell I’d felt in my chest, the Song that had burst
through my head almost without me knowing.

I called him that first day, and he’d come, not knowing who I
was. I didn’t want that kind of power over him. Yet, here he stood.

“Why you? I mean, there are others like you…” I gulped, still
barely able to grasp the idea of another species, even with the proof of it
standing in front of me. The proof of it humming under my skin. I still felt
human enough, but Noah was definitely more. So unquestioningly, obviously more.
“Like us. Why you?”

“I don’t know.” He said the words almost like a tired sigh, as
though it was an unanswered question he’d asked himself over and over.

“So, we’re not really friends. It’s just this…” I waved my hand
between us, not knowing what to call this connection we shared.

“I can’t speak for you, but I am your friend, Caris. I will
always be that.”

My throat tightened and I looked away, not wanting him to see
how his words affected me. They soothed the raw edge of my raging emotions.
Grounded me to center when everything felt like it was spiraling out of my
control. “You must hate me.”

His mouth quirked in a half smile. “No. I don’t hate you.”

Interview with Peggy Martinez

1. How long did it take you to write Contingency?

It took me two months from
start to finish to write the first draft of Contingency.

2. What are the last five books you've read?

Mercy Blade by Faith Hunter,
Death's Rival by Faith Hunter, Rot & Ruin by , Taking on the Dead by Annie
Walls, The Breeders by Katie French.

3. Do you have a book trailer?

Relativity's trailer:

4. Who has been your best cheerleader?

My husband has always been my
number one cheerleader in everything.

5. What would be your advice to yourself before publishing your book?

Write. Don't stop, even when
all the doubts begin and you think everything you've written is crap. Keep
writing. When you're done writing, prepare to butcher your writing, do several
rewrites, and then sew it all back together again. I'm a firm believer that the
true magic of the writing process happens during editing and rewrites.

CONTINGENCY EXCERPT:

“Sage? Dear God, are you hurt?” Some sane part of my brain registered
the voice as someone I knew, so I lowered my dirk a fraction and focused on the
person standing a few feet away from me. Elaine stood there, one hand on her
chest, the other raised slightly palm out, as if to appease a wild beast. I
looked around myself at the carnage and down at the dirt and blood splatters on
my arms and dress. My hair had come undone and hung around my shoulders and in
my face. I must have looked like an insane asylum escapee. My body felt all
wrong so I sat back down on the ground next to the man I hadn’t saved just as a
single tear tracked down my cheek.

RELATIVITY EXCERPT:

“I’ve lain awake in bed the last hundred years
remembering, Sage.” He pushed himself further into my space, putting both his
hands on either side of me, onto the counter behind me. I had to lean back as
he leaned in. “Remembering your scent,” he said softly as he buried his nose
into my hair and inhaled. My eyes fluttered closed, and I tried to hold my body
rigid, but my arms were already shaking from the force of it, from the need to
lean into him instead of away from him. “Remembering the curve of your neck,”
he murmured as his lips grazed my jawline and his hand cupped the back of my
neck, sending tingles all along my skin and drawing a moan from me. “Remembering
the taste of your lips,” he spoke huskily against my mouth.

His mouth devoured mine and the only thing I could do was
wrap my arms around his neck and hold on as he made up for a hundred years of
doubts, desires, and distant dreams. His mouth slanted against mine, and my
body trembled against his as desire and longing clouded my thoughts.

Publication date: December 2012

Synopsis:

Eighteen-year-old Sage Hannigan wants to get back to her own
time, preferably one that hasn’t been destroyed by an underworld plot brewing in
Edwardian-era South Carolina. How hard can it be?

All she has to do is:

1. Learn to use newly acquired warping skills to bend time to her will.

2. Take out a few rogue vampires.

history will change, and the present she wishes to return to will be
no more.

(Sage Hannigan Time Warper #2)

Publication date: February 20th 2013

Genres: New Adult, Time-Travel

Synopsis:

Three months after Sage Hannigan time warps a hundred
years into the past and saves the future as we know it, she is still
trying to come to grips with all the has gained…and all that she has lost.
All of her searching hasn’t turned up Cerberus Society or any
creatures of the night and she’s beginning to wonder if she’s gone crazy
after all. The only things keeping her grounded are her sparring
sessions with Matt and her weekly ritual of scouring the city for low
lives to kick the crap out of, and even that can’t keep her dreams
free of the heartache and bitter sweet memories she has come to loath and…to cherish.
When blasts from the past; good, bad, and evil, come knocking on her
door, will she be able to do what she has to even if it means having
her barely-healing heart ripped to shreds?

too far fetched to think you could happen upon her and her husband

#Review: ATONE by Jessica Grey

4 of 5 stars

ATONE is the first story I've read by Jessica Grey. I wasn't sure if I'd be lost because I hadn't read the first story in the Fairytale Trilogy, but the author does a superb job of including snippets of back story to flesh out the characters. This modern retelling of the fairytale "Beauty and the Beast" was engaging, full of unexpected twists and turns and definitely a page turner. It is well-written with fun characters and has excellent pacing throughout the story.

Would Becca figure out what happened to Nicholas and find a way to help him before he's lost to the Beast? I enjoyed the interactions between Becca and Nicholas. Of course, she despises him at the beginning, but that begins to change the longer she stays in his home and talks with him. Nicholas is a shallow, arrogant, self-absorbed man who's used to getting what he wants with his good looks. He has a lot to atone for in his past actions and the self-realization of his part in his current predicament is eye-opening for him. Lilia and Alex were also great additions to the story as the 3 girls supported each other. From the opening pages to the exciting conclusion, I was engrossed in the story. Ms. Grey is a talented writer and fans of fairy tales will not be disappointed with this story. Recommended.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

#Review: FROZEN by Melissa de la Cruz & Michael Johnston

5 of 5 stars

In this post-apocalyptic YA tale the Earth is covered with ice, the RSA (Remaining States of America) military rule with an iron hand terrorizing citizens and hunting the "marked"-- citizens with strange and magical powers. The marked are sent to a military treatment center whose official front is to help these afflicted citizens, but when in fact, the military uses them for nefarious purposes. Nat Kestal is one of few who has ever escaped the treatment center. She makes her way to New Vegas where she hires an ex-mercenary Ryan Wesson to take her across the ocean to the mystical land of the Blue. Ryan has heard the rumors about the land of Blue where the land is lush and green, but he doubts its existence. Nat has money to pay for the expedition and Ryan whose crew is slowly starving reluctantly takes the job. What happens next will keep you on your toes.

The authors do a fantastic job of pulling the reader in with the opening pages of the voice inside Nat's mind. Their world building skills paint a vivid picture of a dying ice-covered Earth filled with polluted oceans that have swallowed continents whole and boast piles of trash as big as icebergs. Dangerous slavers and pirates roam the seas preying on pilgrims trying to reach the Blue. Everything has a price and the authors throw one riveting heart-pounding scene after another in this fast-paced adventure. The connection between Wes and Nat adds a touch of romance to the story, but doesn't overshadow the action. The major story arc is resolved, but there is much more story to tell. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book!
