Epublishing vs. Traditional Publishing by Michaelbrent Collings
The Final,
Definitive, Uber-Duber, Last, Final, Totally Last Word on the Subject. For Now.

There are a lot of articles across the interweb (and if it’s
on your computer, it must be true!)
about which is better – traditional publishing or epublishing.
Oddly, they seem to come down across party lines: people who
are traditionally published, or who work for large publishing houses, tend to
say that trad-pub is the way to go; people who have their work primarily on
Kindles and Nooks and iPads and Smashwords scream about the future of epub and
the death of print.
I know. Weird,
right?
I wanted to set the record straight.
First of all: I am primarily epub myself. I have a few olde-tyme print books, but
I’m one of Amazon’s Most Popular Horror Writers, a #1 Kindle bestseller, and a
repeat bestseller on almost every one of Amazon’s major fiction genre lists
(sci-fi, horror, fantasy, etc.). I
write everything from kids’ books about magic to grown up books about evil
things that go bump in the night. My
most recent novel, Strangers, has
spent months on Amazon’s various horror bestseller lists, and I anticipate my
next book will do even better.
I make a living writing, and a huge chunk of it is digital.
I also used to be a lawyer. And in good lawyerly fashion, I will render my verdict. Which is better, epub or trad-pub?
It
depends.
Awesome lawyer answer, huh?
But it’s the truth.
Because the reality is that each offers goods and bads. So let’s talk about each.

Epub:
The Good here is that you have complete control. You get to do whatever you want,
whenever you want.
The Bad here is largely the same. You have to do everything. Which is why there are a lot of drecky, poorly-edited books
with ugly covers on epub.
I spend a lot of time and effort working on my books. Not just the drafts, but the edits, the
layout, the covers… everything. I
taught myself image manipulation (meaning, Photoshop-type stuff) so that I
could produce good covers. I
taught myself conversion principles so that I could make sure I did a good job
getting my book to your Kindle without sacrificing layout. A lot of writers aren’t willing to do
this; they slap a product together… and it shows. I would invite you to check out the differences between my
covers (just go to michaelbrentcollings.com) and the ones at my friend Nathan
Shumate’s lousybookcovers.com.
Sadly, you often can judge a
book by its cover.
Now, if you’re looking for “fast” then epub is the way to go
– you can write fast, put a cover together fast, and get it to market
fast. You might also hear crickets
chirping exceedingly quickly as there is a concerted rush of absolutely no one to buy your book. And that’s not because the audience is
bad. It’s because (more often than
not) your book is. The cover is
lousy, the layout is unprofessional, the story is been-there done-that.
Listen up: I firmly believe that everyone – everyone – has great stories in
them. Stories worth telling. Stories people will gladly buy. But I also firmly believe that everyone
has to practice to get to the point where they know how to tell those stories
properly.

Think of a doctor: how many of you would go to a doctor who,
when asked about his qualifications, shrugged and said, “Well, I went to a doctor once. And he sucked so I was, like, ‘I can do
that!’ And then I, like, became a
doctor. And stuff. That’ll be a hundred dollars.”?
No, you want a doctor who a) studied, b) graduated top of
his/her class, c) practiced at an amazing hospital/medical practice, and d)
preferably has been doing this for at least a decade. And that last is important, because practice and experience matter. No matter how smart the doc is, until he’s been around the
block a few times, he’s not going to be all that good a doctor.
Writing is the same way. Most writers just suck until they’ve treated their writing
with the seriousness of a PhD program, spent years honing their skills, years
more practicing before trusted audiences, and then maybe they’ll be pro-level.
And epub will not shortcut any of that process.
Epub is faster.
Faster to market. But if
you’re marketing crap, or if you’re marketing your unprepared skills, it just
means a faster failure, too.
Trad-pub:
The Good here is that you have help. The Bad here is that you have to give
up control. You will have editors,
you will have layout artists and cover artists. You will have other people giving input.* You will then have to actually listen
to that input. And you will have
to wait on it. Epub is a matter of
writing the book and then uploading it to the outlet(s) of your choice. Boom. With trad-pub you:
1) Write the book.
2) Send query
letters to agents.
3) Wait for two
to twelve months.
4) Have an
agent request your book (this is best-case scenario; most often you get
rejected and have to start again from scratch).
5) Send in your
book.
6) Wait another
two to twelve months.
7) The agent
accepts your book (again, best-case scenario here).
8) The agent
sends your book around to publishers.
9) Someone
accepts it after two to twelve months (do I even have to say the best-case
thing again?).
10) The book
gets plugged into their production scenario for sometime in the next year (very
fast) to three years (not unheard of).
Total wait time from end of book to book on shelves: one to
five YEARS.
Yikes. That’s
time you’re not getting paid, by the way.
You’ll get an advance (see my footnote below – if not getting an
advance, why are you doing this?), but no money being actively earned in that
time. There’s also the chance that
during production the editor who loved your book and championed it will get
fired or quit and your book will become an “orphan” with no one to champion it
and will never see the light of day (this happens), or the company itself will
go bust or get bought and the same thing will occur (this happens, too).
The upside is that trad-pub books have a tremendous amount
of access to the market: they get into bookstores, libraries, WalMarts,
Costcos, etc. They are in airports
and liquor stores. They get
foreign market rights and sell movie rights more often. They are more likely to end up making
the extreme big bucks than epub.
That’s changing as epub becomes more and more of a force to be reckoned
with, but as of now if you want to get to the very top of the heap, you have to work with trad-pub at some point.
Also, because you do have a lot of talent at the top, your
books are more likely to look and be presented better. I like my books. A lot. Could they look better? Sure. Would I
love to see them at the checkout aisle at my local supermarket? Heck, yeah!
But, for me, I would prefer to get my books to market, make
my fans happy, and put money in my pocket. And that brings me to…

The
choice
Be aware: you will be choosing. If you epub, that book is dead to the trad-pub world . No big traditional publisher wants to
take Amazon’s sloppy seconds, unless that ebook has sold in excess of something
like 100,000 copies at around five bucks a copy. Then they’ll talk.
(But if that happens, why do you really need them?) So if you’re hoping to parley your
ebook success into a publishing contract with Penguin for that book… yeah, good
luck with that. In fact, for a lot
of agents and publishers, the fact that you’re epublished at all will be a
black mark against you. Because
how dare you!
Silly?
Maybe. But true.
It’s something to be aware of. I think that’s going to keep changing more and more, but
then if you do make a successful career for yourself you run into the problem
of outgrowing agents and publishers: I regularly have offers from publishers I
have to turn down because they can’t afford me, and most agents won’t touch me
because they won’t be able to meet my expectations for the next phase of my
career.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to epub. I think Shakespeare said that.
Conclusion
Epub and trad-pub are both awesome. I have books – real and electronic –
all over my house. I love
them. Some are traditionally
published, some are indies. There
is a place for both. You can
choose either.

professional job no matter where you go.
* And if you don’t, RUN. This is the type of thing you should be getting at a
traditional press. A lot of newer
authors I know are signing deals that basically make them do everything, and
they end up signing away a percentage of their profits in return for someone
basically submitting their files to CreateSpace. Why do that? If
some “publisher” is just a glorified self-publisher and you’re going to do all
the work yourself, you might as well cut them out of the loop and keep all of
whatever profits there are! Read
your contract, find out what they’re going to do, and hold their feet to the
fire!

Interview with Angela Carlie

Hi
everyone. In an attempt to help make readers aware of my new release, Jenny's
Blue Velvet, I was asked to interview myself. This is something I never really
thought about doing, but was up for the challenge. I asked myself, "If I
was not me, what would I like to know about me?" There's only one question
I can think of (which is unrelated to my book), so I went to the internet and
asked Facebook for some questions. If all else fails, ask Facebook, right?
Well, it worked! Thank you Sherry, Heather, Ron, Jen, Racheal, and Sharon for
your contributions.
I
give you myself interviewing me.
Myself:
Where did the inspiration for Jenny's
Blue Velvet come from?
Me:
That's a very good question, Myself. I usually start out writing one book, and
then it becomes something completely different. This was not necessarily the
case for Jenny's Blue Velvet. I wrote a blog post in May exclaiming my excitement
for the idea for this new story. It spurred off a question I asked, "What
if the 'if only' in life became reality?" You know the 'if only'
statement, right? If only I can win the lottery... If only I can lose ten
pounds... If only I didn't have to work in a cubicle anymore... etc. We all
have them. Wishes and ideas on how our lives can be so much better.
This
was the original inspiration for Jenny's
Blue Velvet (taken from my own 'if only') and it's still a major part of
the story, but it spun away into something much more interesting.
Myself:
What's your favorite character in Jenny's
Blue Velvet?
Me:
Man, that's a tough one. Jenny has the characteristics of the average woman,
like me, that I love. She's insecure and clumsy and lovable. Cassandra has
everything the average woman wants, and then some we don't. Mathilde, however,
is a strong spirit. You don't want to mess with Mathilde. I love them all.
Myself:
Angela, what makes you so awesome?
Me:
OMG! hahahaha Well, I don't consider myself as awesome, but if someone else
does, it's probably because of the wonderful lives I'm surrounded by. Including
my incredible Facebook friends. :)
Myself: Do you see bits of yourself in your
characters?
Me:
Absolutely! They come from my imagination. They most definitely carry some of
me with them.
Myself:
Do you prefer writing in settings that are completely imaginary or do you base
your settings in reality?
Me:
Both. I enjoy taking reality and making it imaginary while keeping some of the
reality intact.
Myself:
Why the departure (or brief foray from) YA?
Me:
I have several adult story ideas that I've been holding onto for years. I just haven't explored publishing
them yet. Jenny's Blue Velvet was one
I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I wrote it, and now it's ready to share
with the world. I still have YA stories to write too. It's all about the mood
I'm in, I guess.
Myself:
Goals? Accomplishments? Improvements?
Me:
Oh, wow! They are ever changing. I recently accomplished a half marathon and a
200 mile relay race with a fabulous group of friends. That was pretty freaking
awesome!
Myself:
How long until you can write full time?

That's what I want to know! Ha! I really don't have an answer to this question.
Writing full time is a dream of mine that I've been working toward for the last
five and a half years. I headed down the indie author path two and a half years
ago with the help of my friends and authors Megg Jensen, Karly Kirkpatrick, and
GP Ching. It's been an amazing experience. Yes, it gets frustrating at times,
but I know if I keep it up, someday I'll reach my goal. A lot of that also
depends on the readers and how much they enjoy my stories. And marketing. Oy!
Myself:
Are there any authors or books you recommend?
Me:
Oh, yes! I am fortunate to know some very talented authors that I highly
recommend. Anything by Stacey Wallace Benefiel, Lisa Nowak, Megg Jensen, G.P.
Ching, Karly Kirkpatrick, Chanda Hahn, and all the authors from the Pacific
Northwest YA Authors group.
Thank
you for taking the time to find out more about me and my story, Jenny's Blue Velvet.
Book blurb:
Jenny’s stuck.
She’s tried just about every occupation she can think of and will be digging
out of student debt for a very long time, but has nothing to show for it.
Her everyday routine feels like a prison. And her marriage? Well, let’s
just say it’s been a little one-sided lately and the money she threw
down on the toys from Lover’s Erotic Store was well worth it and then
some.
Jenny decides her next big step is to become a romance writer. Romance books
are flying off the virtual shelves, after all. This will be her big
break, her escape from the prison, and a way to freedom. Self-publishing
is all the rage these days. She’ll be a best seller in no time.
When Jenny makes friends with a woman named Cassandra from the gym, she instantly
decides that her new friend will make a perfect main character in her
upcoming book. After the first chapter, real life begins to resemble the
fiction she’s writing. Her friendship blossoms, sex with her husband
turns into a daily feast, and her job gets more interesting with each
chapter written.
Out of the blue, a person who is a close friend with her husband and who is
dating Cassandra disappears. As the mystery behind the missing person
unfolds, Jenny wonders if she might be responsible for his possible death.
And if she is, what will be the consequence? What has this writing
business gotten her into?
JENNY’S BLUE VELVET is a dark, humorous, romantic thriller for adults only

AUTHOR BIO:
I write fiction. I work hard. I play often. When I'm not pushing a mouse
around at a desk job, which is boring, or writing, which is fun, I enjoy
hanging out with my fourteen-year-old son and husband, reading, hiking,
kayaking, traveling, and running.
Hawaii and Washington are my two favorite states. I believe that if everyone
ate a whole-food plant based diet, cancer cases would be a minimum, heart
disease a thing of the past, and hunger something found in history books.
One of my favorite documentaries is Forks Over Knives. I love hearing about
people reading my books, so if you enjoyed one of my stories, please let me

Interview with Mia Darren

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a
series?
My latest book is "Written
All Over Her," which is the fourth full book in my Adelheid series. It
follows Detective Nykk Marlowe, who is a woman with a traumatic past and the
scars to show for it, literally. She has managed to stuff her past back for
many years, but when the book starts, something happens that brings it all
slamming to the forefront and we follow her as she deals with that
professionally and personally.
Do you have a favorite character?
In the whole series, I'd
definitely say Dakota. We really don't see her in book four, but she is the
narrator of book two and the short story "Family Matters," as well as
appearances in one and three. She's strong, physically and mentally, a total
grouch, sarcastic to everything. I've been told that she says all the kinds of
things I think but am too nice to say. This might be true. I admit to nothing.
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that
change the direction of the novel at all?
Madison. She was written as a
secondary character in the first book in the series, and, after release, was
met with surprising popularity. She never altered the direction of a book, but
now she makes sure she appears in every one and she has her own short story,
"Cats & Dogs." She might even get her own book down the line, if
I can make the idea work.
What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?
Well, you could say I'm a control
freak... but really, I tried the traditional route for a long time and my
rejections--when I got personalized replies--never said I had a bad story or it
was badly written. It was always that it was a good story, but it just didn't
fit what they were looking for at the time. After a while, you get tired of not
hitting the right story to the right editor at the right time, so I started
looking around and decided I liked the idea of controlling my own destiny. In
this self-publishing gig, if I fail, it's on my head. No one else to blame. But
if I succeed? It was because I worked my butt off, and I earned it.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?
Oh, I totally outline. I've tried
writing stories "by the seat of my pants" and it just never, ever
works. The story stalls out and never gets done. That doesn't mean my outlines
are set in stone. They change depending on how the story goes, but I need that
starting frame work if I want to finish it.

What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?
That there are a lot of fantastic
people out there, and a lot of really crazy people too. Sometimes, they're one
in the same! But no, I've met some great people and read some great books as
I've gotten into the "indie" community. Otherwise, I've learned what
it means to be tenacious and to be brave.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your
current book and writing your next book?
Yes! Right now, marketing is
winning, but I hope that'll change soon cause I have a lot of writing to catch
up on!
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the
self-publishing arena?
Do you research, and be ready to
work. This is not "the easy road" and it shouldn't be. You're taking
on the task of making your book ready for release. I'm not one of those that
says the editing has to be sparkling. I've read too many badly edited books
from Tor and such for that, but make sure you at least had some people read it;
that its story is strong and not just gasping with plot issues. Have *some*
editing done so its readable, and make sure it's formatted well! Cause there's
nothing worse than not being able to read a story that might be good cause it's
all over the place. Don't just slap your book out there and then wonder why
it's not doing well. It takes time, and it takes dedication. So make sure you
give it both, and you'll do fine.

I'm a very passionate person, so
yeah. My husband and son, first off. My small group of close friends. Reading.
I used to be very passionate about my drawing and dancing. Those have kind of
fallen off, but I'm working on getting back into it.
What’s next for you?
The sky remains the limit! There
are a lot more books on their way, because Adelheid has so many more stories to
tell, along with my other series and that epic fantasy I've wanted to write for
forever, lol. If you could see my stack of story folders, you know that I'm far
from done. And I'm excited about all of it.

START BEFORE YOU START by Devin D Thorpe
The first great lesson to learn
about crowdfunding is this: start before you start.
Many people wishing to raise money
through crowdfunding, begin thinking that if they put up a crowdfunding
campaign the crowd will quickly provide the money. The internet is lousy with crowdfunding campaigns that raised
little or nothing because people wanting the money didn’t understand how the
system works.
The “crowd,” that is people who
don’t know you, won’t back a campaign until two things happen. The first is
that they need to see that lots of people have already supported you with lots
of money. This means that you need to get the people close to you to back your
campaign early. The second thing is that the crowd needs to hear about it, but
that’s a discussion for another day.
To get the momentum you want in
your campaign, you’ll want to start planning 60 days before you launch, to give
you time to organize. You’ll need to gather contact information for virtually
everyone you know, produce a video, write a press release, reach out to all of
your friends and family and the media.
Doing all of that takes time, but
it will allow you to get commitments for 50 percent of your money lined up in
advance of your campaign. With that money in your back pocket, you are ready to
launch your campaign and have big money come in on the first day, giving you
the momentum you need to appeal to the crowd.
Using this strategy, you can raise
much more money in total toward any cause or purpose you choose. Let me
encourage you to choose wisely. Do something that matters so you can leave your
mark on the world!

Book Tour Blast: LEGEND OF THE SPIDER PRINCE: REBEL by Margo Ander

Legend of the Spider-Prince: REBEL
Wyl is a young rebel whose life of dangerous lies and hidden truths has cost him his childhood and his ability to trust. He is fanatically loyal to the rebel leader, a woman embroiled in a blood-feud with Trascolm's ruling clan. When he’s not away spying, he’s her secret bodyguard—she needs protection from her army of renegades and outlaws as much as from bounty-hunters and assassins sent by her archenemy.
But when the rebellion meets with disaster, the rebel leader's strategy changes. Wyl is thrust into a hostile royal court of underage teens—mere children, to his mind. He’s expected to embrace this more civilized way of life, but his brutally-honed instincts betray him, and he makes enemies instead of friends. Wyl—a boy raised by outlaws—is in over his head and must somehow master the subtleties of court intrigue well enough to keep the rebel leader and her rebellion alive, despite the treacherous machinations of her enemies, and do it without getting himself killed.

In a war-torn land where men have unbridled influence, but women hold the reins of power, a young rebel becomes entangled in a deadly web of magic, court intrigue, and revenge amid an escalating wave of events that will ultimately destroy magic, overturn governments, cause the near-collapse of civilization, even threaten the very existence of life on Eryth—and make him a legend.
