Interview with Matthew S. Cox, NINE CANDLES OF THE DEEPEST BLACK

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?Nine Candles of Deepest Black is the story of Paige Thomas, a sixteen-year-old girl with a special gift. Her grandmother had it, and everyone thought the old woman bonkers, so whenever Paige experienced something strange, she kept quiet about it… until the night she got a premonition that someone dear to her would die. No one believed her when she tried to warn them, and tragedy struck. In the wake of that death, her family is falling to pieces around her. Dad’s become a hollow shell of a man unable to cope with the loss. Her mother has gone the other direction, doting over her little sister Melissa while all but ignoring Paige. For her part, Paige just wants the world to go away; she’s happy sitting in her room tuning everything out.
In an effort to help his family heal, Dad moves them out of the city to a quiet little (fictional) town in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Valley. Paige resents being moved away from the home she’d grown up in, and becomes more sullen. However, on her first day of school, an outgoing girl strikes up a conversation which leads Paige to falling in with the group of local outcasts who have been experimenting with witchcraft for some time, to little  noticeable effect.
With Paige (and her gift) added to the mix, their spell winds up working, but ancient demons have a strange way of granting wishes―in ways that the girls never planned on. Despite the danger inherent in working against her own spell, Paige sets aside her grief to stop what she set in motion before too many innocent people suffer.
Do you have a favorite character? In general or for this book? In general, I’d say Althea from Prophet of the Badlands (and the Awakened series). For this book, it’s kind of a toss up between Sofia or Melissa. (I’m deliberately omitting Paige from the running as it seems wonky to pick the main character :P)
Have you ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the direction of the novel at all?Yes, but it wasn’t in Nine Candles. When I first started working on the Daughter of Mars series, my intention was for Risa (the main character) to become romantically involved with a man from Earth. This would conflict with her die hard loyalty to Martian independence, as her feelings for this guy deepen and it becomes clear his political leanings are the polar opposite of hers. In the first chapter, there’s another guy who is new to the independence movement who seems like a police infiltrator. In the first draft, I had Risa unceremoniously killing him in the middle of a meeting with an underworld figure from whom she was purchasing a bomb. She had no more reaction to this than swatting a fly that had landed on her arm. What I had intended to show her total loyalty to the independence movement wound up putting off some early beta readers who said it made her  unlikable. I wound up keeping the man, Pavo, in the story – and rather than being a police infiltrator that her boss wanted her to kill, he became a member of another sympathetic faction who Risa winds up falling in love with instead of the guy I had initially planned on. So that wound up having a massive effect on the remainder of the series.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?I spent a couple of months sending out queries for my first novel, Division Zero, but I kept getting back the same “this is great, but I don’t think I’m the right agent for it” responses. I was part of an online writer’s chat group (that has since gone down) where another author, AW Exley, frequented. I knew she’d been published, so I asked her if she wouldn’t mind taking a look at my first 5 chapters and letting me know if she thought the reason agents weren’t biting was my query, my writing, or just the fickleness of the business. She got back to me in about a week, said she loved it, and told me to query her publisher directly. I did, and they eventually signed me. So far, Curiosity Quills has published all of my novels.
Are you currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you have manuscripts that you will self-publish? Are you doing both? All of my novels are under traditional contracts with Curiosity Quills. I have not self-published anything yet. I don’t know if I will, but at the moment it doesn’t look like it’s likely.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence? When I’m writing a draft, I need silence. I find even instrumental music distracting in most cases. Though while writing Nine Candles of Deepest Black, I did have on a background track of mood music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIrt5...
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?Something like twenty years ago when I first got the bright idea to try and write a book, I just sat down and started writing. I didn’t finish. I don’t think I even made it a third of the way through the length of a novel before I got lost and gave up. It took me years to feel like trying again, and when I did, I decided that I needed a road map / outline to know where to go. I developed an outline, and found it much easier to finish the book. I have a lot of respect for people who can just sit down and bang out a cohesive story without an outline, though I find it far easier to fix all those little consistency and logic problems when I only have to rearrange small paragraphs instead of huge chapters. One advantage to outlining is I don’t paint myself into a corner or wind up with characters in situations that I hadn’t planned on happening or that feel random.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing? Before I got signed, I looked into hiring an editor… but the one I found was way out of my price range. I was looking at Virtual Immortality at the time, and the guy wanted $10 a page… which would’ve been about $6,000. Fortunately, when Curiosity Quills signed Division Zero, they provided the editing. (Bear in mind I now know that not all editors are that expensive. For anyone who is considering self-publishing, you should have an editor look at it. They can see issues with plot and characterization that the writer will never notice because you’re too close to the story.)
What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)?I’ve got Twitter (@mscox_fiction), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MatthewSCoxA...), a blog (www.matthewcoxbooks.com/wordpress) that I have a lot of trouble thinking of stuff to post on, and I sometimes do the Google Plus thing. It’s a battle for me as I tend to hate spam, but being a small press author where the publisher doesn’t have a massive advertising budget requires that I participate in marketing to a point. I’m constantly arguing with myself about if I should post or not post, feeling spammy and then feeling delinquent for not ‘doing enough’ to try and get people to notice my books.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?Yes. I’d always rather be writing or reading. I always feel a little bit unclean whenever I partake in something marketing related. I know it’s a necessary evil but I have to force myself to do it.
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?Get an editor. Get a real cover artist. They say “don’t judge a book by its cover” but that’s not true. If your book’s cover looks like it was made in five minutes with MS Paint, people are going to assume the same lack of effort/care went into the writing too.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I’m fond of computer games, though don’t throw the kind of time at them these days as I used to. I also like tabletop RPGs, and sci fi / fantasy movies.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?Cats. Chocolate. Coffee. Text. Does “late afternoon” count?
What’s next for you?I’m currently writing The Harmony Paradox, a sequel to Virtual Immortality. After that, I’ll be working on Emma and the Silverbell Faeries – book 3 of the Widowswood series. (MG Fantasy). In November, an anthology of my short stories is coming out (The Far Side of Promise), and in December, One More Run, book 1 of the Roadhouse chronicles – a post nuke-apoc romance… with a dash of zombies – releases.

#Excerpt: EVER TEMPTED by Odessa Gillespie Black

Straightening my tie, I walked around the corner. Smiling people held glasses, discussed life issues, and nodded amicably in my direction.
Who’s that? one woman thought.
He’s a looker, another thought.
I wish I had this girl’s money. At least she’s doing something for the community. I really shouldn’t be envious. A blonde stared toward the right corner of the patio.
Holding a wineglass and smiling, Allie stood in a circle of about twenty people, men in black suits and women in flashy dresses. As much as she had worried about fitting in, she settled nicely with her surroundings. Allie’s benefactor, the late Ava Rollins, would have run the first car out of the drive. She hated visitors.
The whispering crowd hushed, parting like the Dead Sea as I approached Allie.
She hadn’t noticed the decrescendo of voices, as she gestured and nodded.
The women’s thoughts were almost synonymous.
She’s so sweet; you can’t hate her for having it all.
We’ll be great friends. I can tell.
I can’t believe I thought she’d be snooty.
She’s gorgeous. Doesn’t even need that makeup. Pay attention to what she’s saying. Quit lusting, Bill. The guy’s thoughts were considerably more troubling, but this was something I’d have to contend with in loving a woman as strikingly beautiful as Allie was, inside and out. So tonight I wouldn’t kick anyone in the throat.
Who could blame them? Hadn’t I responded the same way?
I stood five feet behind Allie as she continued in light, happy conversation. She rarely wore her hair up. It was the fashion when we’d first met in the late 1860s, and though it was appealing, tonight, loose curls fell down her back.
Why is everyone looking behind me? Her heart rate steepened and an instant swell of pheromones thickened the air. Is he here? Allie straightened and glanced around.

BLURB:
An infinity of lives, only one eternal love . . . .
When Cole Kinsley asked Allie Knowles for her hand in marriage, he meant it. Death be damned. Nothing could keep them apart, not even a hundred years or more. Not even the vindictive spirit of Allie’s dead sister Grace. Released from her watery grave, she offers Cole a devil’s bargain. But to Cole, no price is too high when it comes to his beloved.
Allie thinks it’s almost too good to be true. A week of bliss alone with Cole. His promise kept, after all they’ve suffered at the hands of her sister. To feel the strength of his arms around her again. But when she learns of the sacrifice he made to be with her, she plunges into despair. Forever has slipped from their grasp—unless forever apart is their true destiny . . .

EXCERPT:A sinking feeling washes over me. “We’re going to Meadowood.”He responds without opening his eyes, “I want answers.”
I start to argue that this will be a fool’s errand, but in truth, I want the same answers he does. “Do you think the man who rescued Oliver was with the Southies?”
“I don’t know who else it could’ve been.” He sits up and stretches. “It must’ve been them, and I want to know why they changed the plan without informing us. The Master and his Regulators got to the rooftop very quickly after I fired that shot. I have to wonder if someone told them we were there.”
“You think the Southies took Oliver to get the combination and then set the Regulators on us? Why would they do that?”
He rubs his face. “It doesn’t make any sense. But something’s not adding up.”
I ponder this, thinking about my brother’s strange plea. “I know you think I’m insane, but I can’t help but feel like Oliver knew someone was going to take him; I swear it felt like he was speaking to me when he said not to interfere. But that doesn’t make any sense, either. He’s been behind the fence for years.”
Cason yawns and tries to shake off the effects of the Papaver. “I don’t think you’re crazy; his message did seem odd for someone who was about to hang for a crime he didn’t commit. I don’t know, but hopefully he’ll be at Meadowood and you can ask him yourself.”
My mood elevates as I realize I may only be hours away from a reunion with my brother. The pain in my arm forgotten, I try to concentrate only on this knowledge, confident we’ll have our answers soon enough. “I didn’t get a chance to thank you for earlier. You could’ve just turned me over to the Master and walked away, but you didn’t. I’m grateful for that.”
I feel a little embarrassed as soon as the words leave my mouth. Normally I’m not one to share my feelings, but the Papaver Flower makes me breathless and lightheaded and loosens my tongue.
He reaches for me, careful not to jostle my splinted wrist, and pulls my face to his. “I’m probably going to ruin that sentiment by telling you the Master would never have let me go anyway, but know this—” he runs the pad of his thumb along my lower lip and meets my eyes “—if everyone else in the entire world leaves you to fend for yourself, if your father, your mother, your brother disappoint you, if God himself decides you aren’t worthy . . . you’ll still be able to count on me. I’ve got your back, Vera.”

#Excerpt: SINNERS AND SAINTS: A PATRIOT'S MANIFEST by Kristina Garlick

Present Day, July 7, 1:22 pm
One of the first things I noticed when Saint and I were driving into the fort was that the PSC's flag was now waving from the fort's flag post. I know that the PSC flew their flag out of courtesy, to signify to any other groups passing by that this fort was presently occupied by their group. While the courtesy was appreciated I still did not like seeing the PSC flag flying high. It sincerely took all my control not to jump out of the truck, run to the flag pole and yank down their disgraceful flag. Oh, how I missed Old Glory waving in the majestic sky.
Saint: “The minute we get out of this vehicle, everything is going to be different.”
Zoey: “I know. Eyes are already on us.”
Saint: “Yeah, and I guarantee you it has nothing to do with the undead zombie head, in the back of our truck. I think we have their attention.”
Zoey: “You could be wrong. They could be interested in the tacky mask on Killian’s face or the fact we have a zombie, which is missing all his limbs.”
Saint: “I can’t tell if you are kidding.”
I pick up one of Saint’s water bottles and take a sip out of it as not to break my emotionless face. Years of playing poker had taught me not to give away anything. I think at this moment my poker face was aiding me quite well.
Saint: “Don’t you get it?”
Zoey: “What?”

BLURB:
My name is Zoey Major and I live in Fort Star, New Jersey. I am also a survivor in the zombie apocalypse. Seems very cut and dry but I have been hiding something- like really huge. My secret is game changing. I am not like the others... I know, what a surprise twist! Unfortunately, I can’t tell you why I am different. If you really want to know, you have to figure it out. Hey, even in these dark times, a girl needs her secrets.

#PRE-ORDER LINK: MORAL DEFENSE by Marcia Clark

Author and lawyer Marcia Clark has been back in headlines this year due to FX’s The People vs. O.J. Simpson (actress Sarah Paulson was just nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Clark) and ESPN’s documentary, OJ: Made in America. The seasoned crime writer of four previous novels also launched a new series that both long-time devoted fans and new readers are relishing. Blood Defense, which introduced ambitious and hard-hitting criminal defense attorney Samantha Brinkman, was a #1 Kindle bestseller and received wide critical praise as a “top-notch whodunit” (Publishers Weekly, Starred Review), a “page-turner featuring a ballsy protagonist” (Booklist), and a “great suspense novel” (WorkingMother.com).
Now, Clark follows up with a new Samantha Brinkman legal thriller, full of surprises and complications, not to mention moral ambiguities, entitled MORAL DEFENSE (Thomas & Mercer: November 8, 2016; published simultaneously in hardcover, paperback and e-book).
Blurb:Defense attorney Samantha Brinkman usually doesn’t give a second thought to skirting—or even breaking—the rules of law and order when it comes to winning for her clients. In MORAL DEFENSE, she’s hired to represent Cassie Sonnenberg, a teenager whose family has just been brutally murdered. Her father and brother were stabbed to death and her mother was left barely clinging to life in their own home. As Sam builds the case to protect her client, she discovers details about the girl and her family that don’t add up. Why did Cassie survive? Is she hiding something? Sam finds herself identifying with Cassie as she uncovers startling similarities between the enigmatic teen’s upbringing and her own troubled childhood. The case has become personal, and Sam is forced to make some tough choices. How far will she have to go to win?
More and more readers are discovering the winning combination of Marcia Clark’s sharp writing, skillful plotting, and intriguing characters with her extensive courtroom knowledge and experience. Clark began her law career as a defense attorney and handles defense work currently, so she knows firsthand all the ins and outs of the defense side. And after years working as a prosecutor, she’s having a blast writing from the perspective of a character who can bend the rules to win her cases.

In May of 1997 her book on the Simpson case, Without a Doubt, was published and became a #1 bestseller on the New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and Publishers Weekly bestsellers lists. In February 2016, Clark re-released the book with a new Foreword.

Interview with Jackie Amsden, TOKYO GIRLS

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series? When three teens are offered the chance to compete for a high-profile clothing campaign, their dreams of becoming the world’s next models of the moment seem about to come true. Of course, nothing is ever what it seems in the fashion world. Just ask all those dead girls…
The Tokyo Cover Girls is part one of a three-part series.
Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?Yes, I queried my manuscript to about 25 agents altogether. The process was a lot of work and very slow and like most first-time authors I wasn’t getting very many responses. My husband kept suggesting that I self-publish and so naturally I ignored him. It wasn’t until I met someone who had published their book that way before I began seriously considering that option. Though I was reluctant to give up my fantasy of seeing the Penguin rep wrestle the HarperCollins guy for rights to my book (preferably in watermelon Jello), I eventually decided that I would give the self-publishing path a try. I’d like to say it was about artist empowerment and stuff like that, but I mainly just got bored of waiting. That was about a year ago and though it has been a lot more work than I anticipated I’ve also learned a lot about myself and the industry in the process.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?I think the most unique part of the creation of my cover was that I produced the photos myself—well, with the help from a lot of amazing volunteers. Though I could have used stock photos, I had a very specific image in mind and was just super excited about the idea of making it a reality. It was a lot of fun and I’m glad I did it. If you are interested in learning more, I detail the process in this blog post: https://jackieamsden.com/2015/08/11/m...
Do you belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?Yes! I am deeply indebted to my critique group. Writing is very solitary and introspective work. My group helped me see my writing in fresh and insightful ways that I was too close to recognize. As well, their encouragement and excitement gave me the energy and confidence to believe in my work—something that definitely wavered at times.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?Yes, though I initially resisted the idea. After all, I know how to write—how hard could a little proofing be? After my writing group looked at me like I’d just told them I was considering starting a dog-food diet when I said I was proof reading/editing the book myself, I realized I needed help. And I’m so glad I did because the process was way more complicated than I had anticipated. My perfect manuscript was covered in red error squiggles when my editor was done with it. Once again, I was way too close to the project (and frankly ignorant of a lot of grammar rules) to see them.
What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey? The biggest realization I’ve had is to think more specifically about my target readers—about what I have to offer them and how I can develop a relationship with them over the long term. For example, I used to post whatever I felt like on my blog but after a really great platform consultation with Kimberley Grabas (http://www.yourwriterplatform.com/author/ywp140/) I realized I need to focus on creating content that is of value to the 12 – 16 year old girls that I think would be interested in my book. All of that has forced me to really identify what my voice is within that community and how I can better be a part of it.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?Absolutely. Being new to the area of marketing, which I really see as developing community, has meant that I’ve spent a lot of time reading blogs and reaching out to people and otherwise NOT WRITING. It’s fun at times but also frustrating Of course, having a baby in the middle of it all hasn’t helped a lot but whatever. I’m planning on becoming a vampire next month so I won’t need to sleep anymore and will have time for everything. Aside from the blood sucking part, it’s going to be awesome.
What advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing arena?Start developing your community now! My one regret is that I was so focused on writing that I didn’t take the time to develop relationships with the online reader and writer world and so didn’t have a big network to help me launch my book. And don’t worry: it’s not hard and doesn’t need to take a lot of time. There are many simple things, like reviewing other people’s books, that you can do to begin building those connections.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I’m quite smitten with fashion and the fashion industry. It is beautiful and yet so dark at the same time. I suppose that’s why I like writing about it in my novels and on my blog, which explores the industry’s deadly side.
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?Okay, does anyone ever choose vanilla? If so, I would like to know who they are because they are obviously crazy people and I’m worried they will harm my cat.

What’s next for you?My September 15 book launch part-ay! If you are in Vancouver (the hockey and maple syrup loving one), come on by. Details at my blog: www.jackieamsden.com

#Excerpt: EMMA G. LOVES BOYZ by Taro Meyer

“Boyz3000 will be where?”
“AT THE HOTEL IN THE BAHAMAS WHERE I AM GOING!!!!” she screamed into my ear. “THEY’RE DOING A CONCERT!!”
“OH MY GOD!!!” I screamed back. I nearly fell off my chair. “That is so awesome!”
“I know, but wait! My parents said I could take a friend, and I want to take you!”
“Me?” I gasped. “You want to take me? To see Boyz3000 in their concert?”
“Yes, because we both love them and you’re my best friend and…”
Jenny kept talking, but I was so excited I didn’t hear anything else until she said, “We are leaving next Saturday for the weekend.”
“THIS SATURDAY???”
“No! Next Saturday! The one after this weekend! My parents will pay for the hotel and all. You’ll share my room. You just need to pay for your plane ticket.”
“Uh-oh,” I said. “How much does that cost?”
“It’s on a special deal; it’s a hundred and fifty dollars.”
“Oh. That’s a lot of money. I don’t know if they’ll pay that.”
“I know it’s a lot, but they have to.”
“But what if they don’t?”
Jenny thought for a minute. “Tell them you’ll die if you don’t go.”
“That kind of thing doesn’t work with my parents.”
“Well, think of something! ANYTHING!!!” she shrieked. “My dad is trying to get us backstage passes for the Meet and Greet!!!”
“WHAT?” I gasped. “THE MEET AND GREET???”
“Yes!!!” Jenny squealed. “We’ll be able to meet them IN PERSON, and probably talk to them too because my dad works in TV and…”
She was still talking but I didn’t hear anything else. Oh my God!!! Oh my God!!! My heart totally stopped beating at that very moment…
