Here’s My Spring Uniform

Here’s My Spring Uniform

Anyone else having a casual Crisis of Fashion? There’s something about the change in season, my increasing age, and the banishment of skinny jeans that has me simply confused/baffled/bummed about what to wear.  It’s not so much about sliding my 40something year old self into the latest trends which… 90’s fashion is trending, friends and I’ve already done it.  I’m also gently and willingly on way up in sizes and after months of being uncomfortable in jeans from 2019, I’ve decided I deserve clothes that fit my body and bring me joy.

Let It Be Sunday, 413!

Let It Be Sunday, 413!

Hi, internet pals. I don’t know where you live, but I live in Nashville, and let me tell you, I am not live-laugh-loving right now. This is a city in both mourning and cautious celebration. It’s been a lot to take in these past few weeks. I’ve tried to keep it fairly light in the links this week, although my heart is anything but. As always, thank you for being here and making space for me to air things out.

Let It Be Sunday, 412!

Let It Be Sunday, 412!

Friends, hello and Happy Easter Sunday!

I’m celebrating this fine day in two ways.  One: I’m not wearing Easter tights, which, if you grew up going to Easter Sunday church service in a new dress but last year’s tights that were invariably too small – you understand the freedom and joy of not wearing tights on Easter. Two: Will and I are driving west towards a week long tent camping trip in Big Bend!

Angel Food Cake with Raspberry Cream

Angel Food Cake with Raspberry Cream

This 6-ingredient angel food cake recipe makes for the most tender, light, and downright bouncy cake.  I especially love this cake topped with fresh raspberry swirled, soft whipped cream and a sprinkle of fresh berries.  Angel Food is a classic cake but feels extra special for these early spring days around Easter. Let’s bake, babes!

For all of it’s perceived fuss, Angel Food Cake really is a simple cake.  All we’ll need is six ingredients, an entire carton of eggs, and the confidence to whip eggs to stiff and glossy peaks.

What Cake Are You Making For Easter?

What Cake Are You Making For Easter?

Because I think the answer should be this Wilson Family Carrot Cake!

I recently discovered that Carrot Cake is much like Gumbo and Chicken Soup – we all generally like it best the way the best cook in the family makes it.   The Wilson family makes a kitchen sink type carrot cake with everything from raisins to pineapple and shredded coconut – walnuts too because they’re buttery and toasty.

Springtime at Trader Joe’s

Springtime at Trader Joe’s

Hello! It is your friendly, local, traveling Trader Joe’s evangelist coming to you with Spring’s hottest eats. Some people eat seasonally and I would say I do, too – just at Trader Joe’s. This Spring they’re leaning into dill pickle everything: from dill pickle mini corn dogs to dill pickle cold-smoked salmon. My suggestion, as always, is to go to TJ’s and just vibe, let it tell you what you need, but please don’t go hungry.

Let It Be Sunday, 411!

Let It Be Sunday, 411!

Friends, hi!  Good Sunday to you.

We’ve gently entered the fourth month of the year and ok maybe it was a frenzied mess trying to wrap up March’s tasks but what’s done is done and what’s not done will find it’s time and place.  Let’s all just carry on like we knew this month was coming and we expected time to fly the way it does.

I won’t pass a blooming magnolia tree without stopping to smell its flowers.

The 10 Most Classic Recipes on Joy the Baker

The 10 Most Classic Recipes on Joy the Baker

We’ve baked some real classics this past month, friends! Thank you for letting me sneak coriander and ginger into classic lemon bars and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies.  My tastes lately dictate that a little depth of spice has its place in every classic recipe.

Over the past 15 years as Joy the Baker, I’ve been know to go through phases.  You might remember back when I was adding bacon to everything (?) and using the world “bonkers” an alarming amount.

My Top 15 Kitchen Splurges That Make Time in the Kitchen So Much Better

My Top 15 Kitchen Splurges That Make Time in the Kitchen So Much Better

When it comes to baking, there are things I consider kitchen essentials and things I consider kitchen luxuries.  Somehow, because I’m me, those lists have merged as the luxury tools become more essential than not.  What can I say, I settle into comforts really well.  I’m sure you do, too – so read this list with caution.   Last week we talked about the Parchment Paper Sheets I can’t live without but here’s a more complete list of the easy elite splurges that keep me happy in the kitchen everyday!

Let It Be Sunday, 410!

Let It Be Sunday, 410!

Hello, Joy Nation!

Tennessee has admittedly been a drag lately. But…it’s been two years since I moved back home to Nashville and I’m still delighting in all the charms I missed while I was gone. Recently, a friend began a story by saying, “Hand to heaven…” Another friend wrote in an email, “I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday.”

The turnip truck!! “I’m going to steal that,” I told my mom.
