Friday Fish Fry
Growing up in a Catholic family meant that the beginning of Spring was all about Lent. At some point everyone would have ashes on their foreheads, there was a portion that included palm fronds, and then there were Friday afternoons working in the church kitchen stirring large batches of cole slaw, dredging strips of fish for frying and being bossed around by the not-priest church boss Barbara. She makes the best potato salad… she’s supposed to be bossing the Friday Fish Fry.

Let It Be Sunday!
It’s been a stunner of a week here in New Orleans. Those of us that live down here in the swamp are living it up, soaking in the clear days and perfect temperatures knowing that July is coming. July is hard and July is coming. My parents came to town this past week and they helped me navigate some seemingly adult decisions (I promise to tell you more soon), and I rewarded them with pizza from Pizza Delicious, and sugary cold cereal in the morning.

Raspberry Brulee Rice Pudding
Did you know I’m writing a cookbook about Brunch? Now it’s more that I’m editing a cookbook about Brunch. Actually… it’s more like I’m editing an unnamed cookbook about Breakfast Brunch and Cocktails and I need to send in hard drives and correct punctuation, and figure out what to do with the pancakes in my freezer. The Brunch book. The one that’s making me sweat right now, will make me sweat slightly less in Spring 2017 when it’s published and I can invite you over for breakfast.

Apricot Balsamic Chicken
My maj* Tracy and I have a diet plan together. It’s simple. We text each other pictures of everything we eat in a day. It’s called The Friend Diet and it keeps us accountable for all of the things we mindlessly eat. Tracy has a thing for dried apple rings and I basically only eat tortillas stuffed with various eggs, beans, and greens. It’s not so much a diet because we don’t actually restrict ourselves (as evidence by the picture of a giant slice of Drake on Cake cake I just texted to Tracy)… but it is our way of being accountable for… if nothing else, the amount of apple rings and tortillas we eat.

Let It Be Sunday!
Hello my friends. What the plan for today? Going 0ut for Brunch and then going to Trader Joe’s to buy almond milk? I imagine that’s what everyone is doing while I’m home making myself a third cup of coffee and bouncing off the walls. Here’s an hour of solid Sunday distractions. The Internet made it for us:
• It’s Oscar day, time to give away gold statues to people who pretend to be other people for our entertainment.

Warming Mustard Bath Powder
Do you have plans for the weekend?
It’s early yet. It’s only Thursday, but I love a plan.
On a recent trip to Asheville, my friend Ashley introduced me to the time-tested wonders of a mustard bath. Upon reviewing that last sentence in my head, it might sound as though my friend Ashley bathed me… which she did not because I am grown and fully capable.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Fudge Brownies
I’ve always been under the firm delusion that I’m the “Oh, She’s Good With Kids” Child-less Friend to my child-full friends. I call it a delusion because if I really think about it… no one has ever asked me to babysit, and I’m not even sure if anyone has asked to me hold their baby or if I’ve just snatched them up.
I don’t do baby talk. That very special voice is reserved for kittens, any other cat that is not a kitten, puppies, and really any dog on the planet.

Let It Be Sunday!
Here we go! At it again, living like it’s a Sunday. I hope this week has been kind to you, or at least afforded you with a good parking space when you needed it and maybe a smile from a stranger. You know… the little things that get us through.
I find myself missing the rhythm of the ocean these days, but I’m here in New Orleans trying to make big moves for myself….

Crab Cake Dinner
I have a certain supermarket stroll. The sort that, no matter the crowd, no matter the shopping cart obstacles, I can make my way through the grocery store maintaining a moderate amount of zen. I bag up mushrooms, reach for a clamshell of blueberries, and scoop bulk shovels of oats and popcorn without having to think much about it. I glaze down the chocolate aisle, super casual, like I just happened upon it when in fact I’m going straight for the Brown Butter Dark Chocolate bars.

Let It Be Sunday!
Hello friends! It’s Sunday and it’s Valentine’s Day and I hope someone that loves you made you a cup of coffee and kissed you on the head. I hope your day is filled with warmth.
I’ve been in Asheville, North Carolina this week, wearing a puffy jacket (it’s not so warm), sorting my mind and settling some life. Asheville seemed like a good place to get sorted with very good company from Ashley and Glenn and their tribe of homesteaders and artists.
