Savory Cheesecake with Roasted Vegetables

Savory Cheesecake with Roasted Vegetables

I owe you an apology.  It took me until now to find out about savory cheesecake and share it with you.  It seems only natural that creamy, salty cheese be turned into a baked savory cake with balancing sweet roasted vegetables, but the concept eluded me.  I was probably, and rightly, blinded by salted caramel.  See:  Salted Caramel Cheesecake Pie (if you promise to come back for this savory treat.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

The past month has been forward progress in doing things I didn’t think I could do… until I pushed and tried and made lists and made phone calls and laced up my shoes and just TRIED.  Yesterday I ran my first 10k race.  I finished first (that is a lie).   I signed up on Tuesday fairly confident in my ability to run 3 miles, less confident in my ability to run 6.2… until I tried and I did.

Chocolate Marbled Italian Easter Bread

Chocolate Marbled Italian Easter Bread

There are some things you can’t get back.  The thrill of hunting for those plastic Easter eggs filled with jelly beans, occasionally quarters, sometimes peanut butter cups.  The absolute joy of finding an egg filled with treats… before you sister… and you don’t even have to share.  I remember once finding an old, well-hidden, forgotten plastic Easter egg in my grandfather’s workshop well after Easter… we’re talking mid July… and I thought I had won the lottery.

Watercress and Grapefruit Salad and Alkalizing Green Soup

Watercress and Grapefruit Salad and Alkalizing Green Soup

Spring Cleaning! Spring Cleaning! Spring Cleaning!

If you say it like a chant… like a battle-cry… it makes things more exciting.

It’s Spring and time to clear things up and out! I’m talking a major overhaul of closets, excavating the back of the pantry, and somehow dealing with the teetering stack of mixing bowls in the back of my kitchen cupboards.  All of that!

Except maybe I’ll procrastinate just a few days longer and Spring Clean my lunch rather than address my closet.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

My to-bake list is strong this week, inspired by Spring and that coveted extra hour of daylight we get to enjoy this time of year.  We’ve got creamy pie and Easter bread in our future!  If you’re paying attention to the news these days you know it’s pretty dark out there with Trump and Hillary and campaign ads and talking heads.  If you’re not paying attention to the news, you know that Ben, The Bachelor chose the affable blonde, which was a surprise to no one because that’s what always happens.

Baking 101: How To Fold In Egg Whites

Baking 101: How To Fold In Egg Whites

Baking 101:   a series of how-tos and what’s what when it comes to home baking.  The small stuff, explained.

A recipe that calls for beaten egg whites can be intimidating enough.  There is enough fear around getting the mixing bowl dry and grease-free enough to fluff the egg whites to frighten even a seasoned baker.  Having to then fold those egg whites into batter can feel, well… like too much.

Baking 101: How To Crack and Separate An Egg

Baking 101: How To Crack and Separate An Egg

Baking 101:  a series of how-tos and what’s what when it comes to home baking.  The small stuff, explained.

I know you know.  I know you know not to throw a carton of eggs in the bottom of the grocery bag, toss them thoughtlessly in the trunk of the car, shove them in the fridge, slam them on the counter.  I don’t need to tell you to treat eggs delicately until, that is, the very moment you want what’s inside of them.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Living alone has it’s trade offs.  On the one hand, you have no partner in crime to help you get large spiders and occasion cockroaches (it’s New Orleans… it just happens) out of your house.  That’s where large books (for throwing at spiders) and vacuum cleaners (for quickly sucking up cockroaches) come in handy.  On the other hand, there’s no negotiation about what goes on, and how cluttered the coffee table is.  This is my more-is-more approach.

Banana Milk Chocolate Weekend Pancakes

Banana Milk Chocolate Weekend Pancakes

Welcome to the weekend where there’s time enough for pancakes and reason enough for chocolate inside of them.

I hope you allow yourself at least one lazy day this weekend… where you wear you pajamas so long into the day it doesn’t make sense to change out of them.  Add homemade pancakes and that’s real, deep luxury.

You know how people say “It takes coffee to make coffee”?

Thursday Inspiration

Thursday Inspiration

Every now and again we need a little post-mid-week pick me up.  Post-mid-week refers specifically to Thursday…  because Wednesday is mid-week and Friday is a celebration.  We’re looking Thursday smack dead in the eye and willing it to be Friday but you can’t make a leopard out of a lemur (which is totally a saying that I just made up and am definitely not deleting).

Here’s some inspiration to help us soar through this day, or at least the next fourteen to eighteen minutes.
