Sunday Morning

Last night I watched a kid play his Dad like a fish on the line. The kid was bored; he and another child had tired of playing ball in the yard, so they progressed into the street, where they spent time kicking the shit out of their Grandmother's mailbox. The ballgame continued; I watched as they went into our neighbor's yard a few times to retrieve the ball.  Later, Nadia asks to go outside; when she's about to, she announces to me, "There's some kids in our yard."...

Friday Morning

The fog has hung here all night, hovering close to the ground. I'd hoped to watch the meteors last night, but when I woke, the whole world was shrouded. The street lights further down cut yellow-white triangles through the fog; they looked like angled pieces of milk glass, self-illuminated, suspended in the night.

There are a million things to do today. I've done four of them already; after this blog entry, I'm going to have a lovely hot shower, get dressed properly (my current att...

Thursday Morning

Let's talk about Beatrice, the Chinese Witch. I met her at a time where I was unsure of many things, but one thing I knew absolutely  is that I hated the job I had at the time, working in a factory that packaged perfumes. She had the same job and hated it too, and we had that in common. That was about it, if you set aside the fact we were both short and female. She was quite a bit older than me, and very wise.

She was also the most ferocious person I ever met. The guys who worked in t...

Wednesday Morning

Take 3 on this. Maybe this time I'll get it.

Sometimes problems reside in the crevices in conversations that occur between ideas held in common. When I say dog and you say dog understanding is pretty much automatic - even if in my head is an image of a wee bouncy beagle and in yours is a sleek smiling greyhound, the general canine essentials are agreed upon. But not all words - not all ideas - function the way dog does.

Crazy is, as Jenne noted, a sloppy word. There's the whole mental i...

Tuesday Morning

"What does a crazy person do, all day, exactly?"

Apparently I was supposed to be less theoretical in my approach. So let's try this again.

On Monday, I woke up, read a bit, wrote a blog.
Roused the kids, got them ready for school.
Once they left, I wrote four articles; one on jewelry, one on home improvement, another on shipping, the last, on adaptive technology for the mobility impaired.
Went for a walk, way up the hill, where I saw some cows, shattered robins' eggs, and a beagl...

Monday Morning, Here We Go

"What does a crazy person do, all day, exactly?"

I guess the answer to that varies, person to person, day to day. It depends upon the weather. What work needs to be done. It is the lot of the fringe to take up what can not be done by the well-adjusted; if for no other reason, they have no time. They are busy, always busy, in the office, on the go, can't relax for a minute because one missed step, one unwary moment, and someone younger, hungrier, better will be in their spot faster...

Friday Morning

LJ apparently decided to change its set up without calling me first for clearance. Damn internet, always changing like a changing thing.

In other news, Tim & I appear to be on the verge of actually solving a problem like grown ups, on our own, without any yelling, fighting, screaming throughout what is turning out to be a two week process. It has been expensive, SO EXPENSIVE, but we took our time and it looks like we may have actually done it.

Today is full of lots of running, appointments...

Premonitions

I can't even begin to describe the creeping horror that sets in, knowing the shit is about to hit the fan. It lays in your stomach like a chilled snake, a slow moving spring snake who has thoroughly consumed every bit of warmth stored in his rocky home and needs more desperately - yet that need is at war with the fact that there may not be enough energy present in his system to acquire more warmth. So he takes the time to inventory his reserves, assuring himself at some length of his capa...

Things I Have Learned Today

I really like the writing of Terry Hayes. You know how publishers push a book like whoa and it comes in the mail and you think Oh Boy, this is going to suck, because usually there's an inverse relationship between the amount of push and the quality of the book (yes, Dan Brown, I'm looking at you!) but this book - I Am Pilgrim - was a very pleasant exception to the rule. If you like Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, the early Alex Cross books that I can't remember who wrote, you'll lo...

Friday Morning

Do you know how they say you can't fix a problem by throwing money at it? I am pretty sure that is wrong. One of the things I've had to learn over the years is that not all solutions are equally desirable: a solution isn't necessarily the right solution just because you can afford it. Better solutions cost more money, and understanding that the extra cost may be worth it, may in fact mean you have less problems overall, is something it's taking me an embarrassingly long time t...
