Kimberly Brubaker Bradley's next book, The Night War, will be published April 9, 2024. She is the author of nineteen previous books, including the Newbery Honor winners Fighting Words and The War that Saved My Life. The sequel to the latter, The War I Finally Won, appeared on many state-award and best-books lists and was described as “stunning” by The Washington Post and “honest” and “daring” by The New York Times. She is also the acclaimed author of She Persisted: Rosalind Franklin. Kimberly and her husband have two grown children and live with their dogs, two highly opinionated mares, and a surplus of cats on a fifty-two-acre farm in Bristol, Tennessee. I went to Smith to study chemistry. The night before I left home for my freshman year I stayed up late to finish a book I'd taken out from the public library--Dicey's Song, by Cynthia Voigt. On the very last page I read that the author had attended Smith--which no one in my small Midwestern home town had heard of--and I remember a shiver passing over me, like I was seeing my future, though of course that couldn't be true. But it seemed like a promising omen.

Then sophomore year, faced with a schedule that included organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physics, I took a children's literature class, taught by none other than Patricia MacLachlan the year that she won the Newbery for Sarah Plain and Tall. Patty and Jane Yolen did in fact become my mentors--though it was a long time before I was brave enough to consider myself primarily a writer.

So Smith certainly was instrumental in making me a writer--but I still can't answer why so many children's book writers graduated from Smith.(less)

Speak Up

I would have liked to have written something funny today. But then af

“I don't know what to say," she said, after a pause. "I don't want to tell you a lie, and I don't know the truth."
It was maybe the most honest thing anyone had ever said to me.”
