Some ideas are just brilliant

And by "brilliant", I mean "Why the hell didn't I think of that and happily spend the rest of my life doing it?" brilliant.

Ladies and gents, I give you the Battery Park Book Exchange in Asheville. Part bookstore, part wine bar with plenty of comfy seating and reading areas - not to mention cheese plates - it's the sort of place that makes you want to purchase a fez and a smoking jacket before stepping inside. M and I stumbled across it on the way to our hotel after Dave Williams' reading at Mala

More One-Sentence Television Insomnia Reviews

River Monsters - Sure, if by "monster" you mean "fish"
Drain the Ocean - Gawrsh, it's deep, but you probably knew that already
America's Got Talent - Jamie Farr and the Unknown Comic called, and they want their gong back
City Confidential - Yes, people in your town suck, too
Eureka - You'd think they'd be used to this by now...

Insomniac Sorbet Theater

Last night's edition - sweet cherry vanilla. Also, I think I've hit on the right mango-to-peach ratio.

And soon, I will resurrect my plans for single-malt-scotch-and-dark-chocolate ice cream. This, as they say, could get ugly, folks.

Awareness

I am aware that making sorbet at 3 in the morning when one cannot sleep is not normal.

I am also aware that I am not entirely normal, and I didn't need insomniacal sorbet making to tell me this.

Meme Failure

I got tagged with the "50 concerts" meme on Facebook, which I can only assume is a subversive market research ploy by concert promoters to see who they should be turning out on the road more often to appeal to the graying nerd demographic.

First thought: I haven't /been/ to 50 concerts.
Second thought: Well, maybe I have, but I'm not sure the Philly Pops counts. What about the mandatory annual viewing of "The Nutcracker"?
Third thought: Even if we narrow it down to rock/folk concerts, my list is go

I Suppose It's In Bad Taste...

...but seeing a single issue of SciFi on a magazine rack surrounded by a veritable horde of Michael Jackson tribute mags - and I mean literally surrounded - struck me as weirdly appropriate.

Writers' Workshop at AGDC

Yes, it's that time of year again. Austin GDC - and the Writers Summit therein - is rapidly approaching, and that means it's time to start thinking about the Game Writing Workshop I run at the conference.

If you are attending AGDC and are interested in participating in the workshop, now's the time to get the material you want workshopped in. Any format of game writing - dialog, cut scene scripts, character designs, backstory, etc. - is fair game for discussion, critique, and feedback. Please sen

Seen in Passing...

Last night:

Melinda and I took in the late, late show of Harry Potter XVIII or whatever they're up to now, enjoying it thoroughly. I made the mandatory cracks about Dumbledore shouting "You shall not pass!", but that's neither here nor there. We had a good time together, we enjoyed the film (after a veggie-heavy feast prepared by yours truly from the products of the local farmer's market and the fresh produce co-op we've joined.)

It wasn't a well-attended showing. It was late, the movie clocks in

Never Mind Video Games...

This is what I want to do with my life.
Because really, what could possibly be cooler* than investigating haunted bowling alleys?

*Yeah. A lot of stuff. I know. But work with me here.

One Sentence Television Reviews...

....of stuff I caught late-night surfing due to random insomniac things:

Man Versus Food: Both sides lose.
World's Scariest Places: Not until you include Darfur, thanks.
Warehouse 13: Viewers, 0, as once again SyFy pitches a shutout
The Dish: Best served cold, or possibly sent back to the kitchen
Royal Pains: aka "Beach House"
Man Versus Fish: Fish loses, man should be ashamed of himself.
Cash Cab: Followed by "Muggings Caught On Film"
