Last Grace Notes

When taking an elevator filled with 15 year old Swedish cosplayers, at least some of whom are holding knives, let them get off first. There's something very soothing about a train conductor who sounds like your stoned uncle doing early-morning easy listening DJing reading off station information in multiple languages, most of which aren't your own.Whoever thought of adding fresh raspberries to a glass for cider is a genius. The appropriate response to a bunch of teenagers offering you a...

Last night before travel

There's always something nervous about the last night before an early morning flight out. I find myself quadruple-checking the alarm, packing and repacking, and climbing into bed with my cell phone under my pillow so I can't possibly miss the alarm. I climb into bed and force myself to try to get a few hours' sleep, and then every twenty minutes find myself sitting bolt upright anyway. First thought: "Oh, hell, did I miss the flight?" Second thought: "Where's the cell phone? What time is it?"...

Memo To Self: Reading Material

I don't care if you are four Dan Simmons doorstops behind, don't take the book about being frozen into Arctic Ice and chased by a giant monster with you to Scandinavia in winter.

That is all.

Days 2 & 3: Malmo & Copenhagen Random Thoughts

Mooseburger apparently tastes like whatever spice the chef mixes too much of into the grind. It does not, however, taste like chicken.I now know the Swedish tirm for "fruity girly drink," as in "Hey, we're all manly game developers here and you just ordered a ______________."Every fourth shop in Copenhagen is a lingerie shop. Every third shop is a House of Amber (TM). Which means roughly every twelfth shop is a place that sells lingerie made entirely of fossilized tree snot.Copenhagen also...

Random Notes from the Road, Take 1

All the light fixtures at London Heathrow are made from thinly sliced Daleks."Xider" is not Swedish for "cider". It's Swedish for "garishly colored, oddly flavored alcoholic beverage that your dinner companions will be very amused to see you drinking." That goes double for the mandarin orange-chili flavor.Whoever picked the lighting for the underside of the bridge near our hotel has a sense of humor. It's fiery red, and the reflection off the ice makes it look as if a certain mythical...

Mike Lee Is Right

When Mike and I were walking the streets of Bucharest observing general high strangeness, he turned to me (after the circus, before the wild dogs, and about an hour before the brass band's take on "El Condor Pasa"), and said accusingly, "This stuff never happens when I travel alone. It's you."

After having been crunched in the doors of the Copenhagen-Malmo train line, I am now inclined to believe him.

Why I Am Not Allowed To Hunt And Gather

Monday, Melinda went to her martial arts class, which starts at 8:30. This puts her home around 10, which means we eat a late dinner.

Around 9:15, I said, "I don't want to dirty up the kitchen. I'll go get takeout."

The first restaurant I go to is closed. Early, mind you, but closed.

So I says to myself "Let's go to the wings place. They're open late, and they have a takeout window." I get to the wings place. They've closed their takeout business.
Sensing a motif, I says to myself...
