Cold Coffee Author Spotlight Interview With Christopher Hudson

Quote From Author Christopher Hudson: "As on-and-off denizen of cubeville, I have written and produced many corporate videos and marketing projects. As an author, I have two published books, NORTHERN CROSS and HEADWIND, and a couple of screenplays."

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Michigan? Well, writer or no, I’m a proud Michigander. I just like being from a place where you can use your hand to indicate a location.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? Finding myself unemployed with no other marketable skills.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I had written the manuscript for my first book, Northern Cross with no particular goal in mind, until my sister read it and thought I ought to look into getting it published. That led to a long, strange and frustrating trip ... but we managed to get ‘er done.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Not so much my environment, but I’d have to say my upbringing (and later life situations) did. My parents were creative folks who encouraged that element in me. Then there was my ‘day job’... I wrote a lot of videos and other training materials for the corporate world. As uncomfortable as I was in that role, I have to say it honed my writing skills and taught me how accept criticism about my work without taking it personally.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? After ... and no easy task, I might add.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? Fun stories and interesting characters are my idea of entertainment in fiction ... so, that’s what I try to write. I figure if I’m entertained, maybe someone else will be too.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? I’m not sure how to answer that question ... writing for me is hard ... not tarring a roof on a 90 degree day type of hard ... but a finish your homework before you can go out and play ball type of hard. I’d usually rather be playing ball. That said, I do enjoy creating the dialogue between my characters ... I really don’t know what they are going to say or do until they are responding to something somebody said or a situation ... that part is fun.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? Forcing myself to focus for extended periods of times ... I’d usually rather be playing ball ... well, now of days, that be watching a ballgame.

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Seeing my books in print (and, later on Kindle).

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Marketing. I hate it, and, either because of that or some other innate deficiency, I’m terrible at it.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Write about stuff you enjoy and stick to it ... even kicking out few hundred words a day. Sooner or later you’ll end up with a book. Hey, if I can do it, anyone can.

Who is your favorite author? That’s a tough one ... kinda like choosing your favorite child ... but if pressed, I’d have to say Elmore Leonard (Hey, he’s from Michigan too ... hmmmm).

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? When I’m not writing (or watching a ballgame), I’m messing around with music. I play guitar and sing (well, I call it singing) whenever I get the chance.

Tell us what makes you proud to be a writer from Springville CA? Mainly, I’m happy that there are readers who truly love my books. Because I am now writing two mystery series, I have fans who like by Rocky Bluff P.D. series best and others whose favorite is the Deputy Tempe Crabtree series.
What or who inspired you to become a writer? Since I was a kid, I’ve been writing stories, plays, and articles. Because I’ve always loved reading, I’m sure that’s what inspired me to write.
When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? At the age of 10, I wrote a fairy tale and illustrated it and even sent it off to a publisher. I received a kind rejection letter, telling me to try again after I was older. I did, of course, but the first two manuscripts I sent off were rejected and it was quite a few years before I tried again.
Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Though my mother didn’t encourage my writing, my father thought I could do anything and I’m sure that had a big part in my continuing to write and try to get published. I married young and had five children. My writing for a while was confined to being the editor of the PTA newsletter and writing plays for my Camp Fire Girls to perform. Writing has always been a part of my life in one form or another.
Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? Sometimes it happens one way and sometimes the other. The title of my latest book, Murder in the Worst Degree was given to me by a friend before I had an idea for the book. I began writing and I was nearly done before I knew how the title would tie into the story. Other times, like Spirit Shapes, the title came from a Native American quote.
Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? I’ve written two historical family sagas (first books to be published) based on my own family genealogy and I wanted to fill out the stories, use my imagination and research to figure out why my ancestors moved where they did. Because I was reading both mysteries and horror, I began writing both. One of my favorites, Lingering Spirit, ( a romance with a touch of the supernatural) is based on something that happened in our family.
Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? When everything is moving along well and the story is following from my mind, through my fingers onto the computer keys so fast I can hardly keep up-and I know exactly what’s going to happen next and why.
Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? When I’m stuck, and don’t know exactly where the plot needs to go next. However, this never lasts long as the characters nudge me and I keep on writing until I get it wrote.
Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Knowing that I no longer have to go through the query process to get my next book published. Both of my publishers are ready to accept the next book in the series when I have it ready. It will still have to go through the editing process and possibly some changes made, but I don’t have to go through all that waiting and wondering any longer.Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Through the years I’ve had some publishers who were not honest. In each case, I had a hard time believing that this was the case. And once I had a prominent agent who I thought was working for me, when in reality she wasn’t send my manuscripts anywhere. That’s why I’ve never worked with an agent since.
What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? There are so many ways to get published these days, find the way that suits you best. But no matter how you decide to go, always get your book edited before submitting to a publisher or self-publishing.
Who Is Your Favorite Author(s)? I have so many that I can’t possible list them all. Many of my favorites are small-press authors like me.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Austin, TX? Austin has an absolutely incredible and supportive arts community. There’s an openness and appreciation for so many different mediums here.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My mom. She’s the one who instilled a love of reading and literature in me. She’s the one who taught me to find the bliss within the pages. From there, writing I suppose was a natural progression.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? When I was twelve. Though I was in my mid thirties before I believed that what my characters had to say had validity.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Absolutely. My mother was an English teacher who instilled in me a love of literature and the myriad worlds that could be mine if I only dared to believe and open my mind! I grew up with a family that cherished education and imaginative expansion.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? Usually the ‘logline’ holds the title. I also write screenplays, so once I have the concept, a working title comes relatively quickly.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? I like things a little spicy so work mostly with Thrillers and Supernatural themes. I tend to think of genres as ingredients in a recipe, so I love mixing and blending their elements in the hopes of creating a unique flavor to my particular story telling voice. Also, exploring human behavior in relationships is utterly fascinating and employing multiple genres gives a far more well-rounded view of a character and how they interact with the world on different levels and under different circumstances.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? The moment when you know your characters will prevail in spite of, AND because of whom their experiences have made them.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? The doubt. As a writer there is horrific doubt, are the characters real enough? Is the story compelling? Are the voices individual enough and the motivations true? Is everyone being true to who they are? Is the story cohesive? (I could go on... but let’s not.)

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? The day a client told me she was going to start a small press so that she could put my works out there in the world. She believed in me so much that she started a press geared toward getting new authors with unique voices a chance to be read.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Form rejections. I have a file cabinet full of them. They hurt, deeply.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? If writing is what you love, don’t ever stop. Learn from others, how to run a business, learn to network. (I don’t mean slamming the keys at the local coffee shop... meet people, join writers groups. You will suck many lemons before you find the right people to work and grow with but when you do, it’ll all be worth it.).

Who is your favorite author? The first author who made me pursue her works was Marguerite Henry.

The Third Race (Third - Heroes Of The Line Series)

Wednesday's Child (First - Freedom Fighter Series)

What Format (s) are your books in? Print and e-book both of course! Something for everyone!

What special projects are you working on now and what books do we have to look forward to in the future?

I'm currently working on The Fourth Tier; Heroes of the Line Book 4, Nick, Frank and the rest of the surviving Heroes of the Line are split between worlds, each trying to plug the inter-universal leakage that's letting both Schades and their allies, The Living Dark into our universe in the hopes of banishing light from both realms and taking them over.

There are two other projects I'm focusing on heavily, one is called Avalon - While en route to the penal colony PEX with re-captured fugitive Serian Nine; Commander Ava London's shuttle crosses paths with a mythological entity that lives within the interstitial realm between universes. The catastrophic collision sends all three parties back through time to current day earth with both Serian and the creature lucky enough to escape the Commander's custody, only to be unleashed on a population that couldn't begin to understand the origins of the carnage about to be brought down on it.

And the other is called - In The Name of God - Rick Strainge wanted to die, but while in that land between life and death, faced with the consequences of his self-destructive act, begs for a chance to put off the inevitable. His prayers are answered by a warrior angel who recruits him into God's Army in an effort to destroy the rising tide of vessels whose only goal is to set Lucifer free from hell. With Pastor Lou Carpenter as his guide, Rick embarks on a journey that will challenge everything he ever thought he knew about good and evil, and the eternal dance between the two forces when his own daughter is revealed to be one of the vessels he must destroy.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? Yes. Please, if you love to write do it! Invest in an editor, one you can meet with face to face. Believe in your voice BUT... understand your market. Do you have a point? If so, stick with it. Do you want to be the next Rowling? Meyers? Koontz? Learn the art and structure of story then as you write consider both the market and yourself. It can be a beautiful compromise! Just understand what you want and why.
