What readers get from Google Play and Kindle mobile book apps

Applications to ebook retailers make it easy for people to read on their smart phones and tablets. Two popular ebook apps come from the mega retailers Google Play and Amazon Kindle.

Both have nice features, and a user's decision on which one to use usually boils down to which retailer they generally shop at.

Like the Borg from Star Trek, Google is well equipped at assimilating humans into its content ecosystem. The plus side of this is that you can access your content through your Google account on any mobile or desktop device.

Its Google Play Books app works on any devices with browsers, including iOS devices. You can also upload your own documents (PDF or Epub) to the books app, which is handy for people who select independently produced content or have other documents to review for work or pleasure. For example, I load raw manuscripts onto my ereading devices so I can read them and consider them before entering an editing environment.

Of course you can purchase ebooks from the Play Store with app and download freebies.

Other features are:
BookmarkingAdjustment of screen to light and darkChange fonts and font sizesText-to-speech when available
The Kindle books app is largely the same except it enables access and purchasing at the Amazon Kindle store. For people who already use a Kindle, the app lets them pick up books and continue them on other devices. This app also lets users upload books borrowed from their library accounts.

Other features are:
Dictionary look up of wordsFont and font size adjustmentVarious screen color and brightness options

As an author, I publish my work for both Google Play and Kindle platforms. Free ebooks are available that introduce my three series: The Rys Chronicles, Rys Rising, and Werewolve in the Renaissance.

Want some exciting historical fantasy to read on Google Play or Kindle?
Then try Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale. It's free on Google Play and only $0.99 at Kindle (Amazon doesn't let me give it away but you might get it to price match to free.)

About Werelord Thal:

Thal embodies the ancient magic of the pagan past. He challenges a world conquered by a spiritual system that denies the flesh and forgets the Earth.

Although wanted for Devil worship and shape shifting, he still boldly walks the streets of 16th century Prague. Jesuits hunt him. Mercenaries fear him. Musicians sing his praise, and women are captivated by his alpha swagger.

Check out some gripping epic fantasy for grown ups in the Rys Rising series.

Rys Rising: Book I is free on both Google Play and Kindle.

About Rys Rising:

A young warrior ruined and near death is saved by Onja a mysterious rys female. Forsaking all that he was, he will take the name Amar and serve his new magical mistress. A lord among outlaws he will become, feared by kings and called the dro-shalum or curse demon by the common folk. Indulge yourself and read this sumptuous epic told from many angles.

Year in and year out my first novel Union of Renegades entices people to enter the world of the rys alongside Dreibrand Veta.

This epic fantasy is free on both Google Play and Kindle.

In Union of Renegades you'll meet Dreibrand Veta, an officer with the Atrophane Horde. And yes it's a big deal to be part of the horde conquering the known world. Dreibrand is young and ambitious. He's out to rebuild his family's fortune. But at a critical moment, he realizes he's just never going to get what he wants working for his boss, the Hordemaster Kwan Chenomet.

Dreibrand does something rash. He ends up wanted and in the company of an escaped slave, Miranda. With her two young children, she is fleeing the brutal onslaught of the Atrophane. Together they enter the Wilderness. No one ever comes back from this place.

And so Dreibrand and Miranda are ensnared by magic and pass into the world of the rys where the Goddess Onja has ruled the western tribal kingdoms for over two thousand years. She sits upon the greatest treasure. Every year it grows as warring tribes deliver their tribute. Her rival Shan lives at her side, waiting for something to change so he can destroy her.

See where this epic series takes you.

Plunder the palace and celebrate - An excerpt from Savage Storm

This excerpt from Savage Storm: Rys Rising Book I lets you see into the character of Demeda. Born a princess of the Sabar'Uto Tribe, she goes onto betray her people. She does it for the love of two things: Amar the Overlord of the Kez and the power he can give her. She consents to anything he asks because she must remain important to him. Her power arises from being part of his entourage.

Her choices take her far. She will become the Handmaiden of the Goddess and travel to the other side of her world in the holy war that is to come.

In this excerpt from the novel, the rys Onja has used her magic power to conquer the Sabar'Uto capital. Her faithful warriors have taken control in the name of spreading the worship of her. They intend now to celebrate their success.

Amar leads Demeda into the newly seized palace of her family...

Upon entering the middle ring of the palace, Demeda quickly noted the disorder of recent sacking. Tapestries were torn or missing, shelves that had displayed art were empty, and the occasional gouge or scrape of a weapon was apparent on woodwork or a chipped fresco. Most of the damage was superficial and it was still the same beautiful palace built by master craftsmen, but Demeda had never been able to travel through the men’s circle so openly before. She had either been rushed through with her face covered or she had been sneaking about. But now her face was uncovered, her black hair flowing free, and she felt for the first time that the place actually belonged to her. She had just looked into the eyes of Onja’s supreme power, and Demeda gushed with confidence. She strutted boldly next to Amar and reveled in her sense of possession. She was royal born and this was her house, and for the first time, she could walk its halls freely.Never had she mounted the steps of the grand lobby outside the throne room. As she walked, she looked up and often turned in circles as she admired the high windows full of light and the painted ceilings. Amar took her into a banquet hall where no female of her family had ever eaten. She noticed that the crowd behind Amar had thinned to his closest warriors. Worried about Luci, Demeda asked Amar if he would assign lodging to her companions, and he dispatched a man to see to it. In the banquet hall, a broad table draped with yellow cloths was surrounded by ornately carved chairs gleaming with gold leaf. This room was used for morning meals of State and was situated so that morning sun streamed through the glass windows near the high ceiling. Three fireplaces blazed and sculptures lined the walls. Demeda recognized a bust of her father that was knocked over in a corner. Amar hopped onto the table and strode its length. He laughed and asked his warriors if they were hungry for breakfast. They cheered and piled into the chairs and shouted for the servants. As Amar approached the head of the table he beckoned Demeda. When she came to the edge of the table he grabbed her and pulled her up. She laughed a little deliriously as he spun her around to show her off to his men. She recognized them all. Kym, Vame, Cybar, and all the warriors who served the lieutenants closely along with Urlen, who always looked out of place. “Dance for us, Demeda,” Amar said.Demeda stopped laughing. She glanced down the table and the Kezanada men looked back at her with lascivious twinkles in their eyes. She blushed with fear. Amar removed her cloak and lifted her shoulder bag away. He tossed them onto a chair and gestured for her to perform. The other men shouted encouragement, but she cringed with uncertainty. It was ingrained in her that such a display would be degrading, yet the new experience tempted her outlaw heart. And she guessed that it would please Amar to see the daughter of the vanquished Sabar’Uto King perform. Demeda even conceived of it as a mighty revenge upon her father, but she was not just any female plaything. Looking Amar in the eyes, she said, “There’s no music.”Very slowly Amar smiled, in admiration of her little defiance. “A dancer does need music,” he granted and then jumped off the table. He scooped Demeda down into his arms and slouched into a chair at the head of the table with her on his lap. Servants were coming in with pitchers of water and wine and trays of sweet breads, cheese, and dried fruit. Amar hollered for them to fetch musicians and dancers and pulled Demeda close. He liked her small frame, perky breasts, and delicate natural scent free of Loxane’s enticing potions. He touched her face and ran a hand through her long hair, but he did not kiss her. He moved her into her own chair and poured himself a cup of water. Warmed by his teasing embrace, Demeda looked down the table at the rough crew of Kezanada tearing into the food and drink. She knew that she should feel outraged about the plundering of her family’s wealth, but none of it had been her birthright and she honestly was amused. This unthinkable transformation was the work of Onja, and Demeda smirked as she beheld the crazy work of her Goddess. Demeda poured herself a goblet of wine to brace herself for the licentious abandon that she felt coming on.

25% Off Hardcovers of Rys Rising fantasy series

Fans of my fantasy series Rys Rising have a chance between now and April 2nd to save 25 percent on hardcovers. I produce these hardcovers at the print-on-demand company Lulu that does a nice job making case-wrapped books with the art printed directly on the binding.

They are $24 each, and the coupon code will reduce them to $18 each.

When shopping at Lulu, use coupon code FOOLME at checkout to reduce the cover price by 25 percent. The code is also supposed to give you 50 percent off ground shipping.

Rys Rising Hardcover at Lulu

Savage Storm Hardcover at Lulu

New Religion Hardcover

Love Lost Hardcover

If you enjoyed the series and consider my books worthy of precious shelf space, please take advantage of this sale. You could also give one or all of them as a nice gift.

I set up these hardcovers to produce durable copies for myself. Although I connect with most of my readers through ebooks, I need physical representations of my work for my own shelf. I refer to them as my trophies.

If you're interested in paperbacks, please order them through Amazon. These are made by Createspace, which I think does a superior job on the paperbacks than Lulu.

Below you can enjoy an excerpt from the first book in the series Rys Rising. I have it set up through Slide Share if you would like to share it.

Getting back in the flow of writing

What do I like most about writing fiction?

The activity takes me aware from the little things in my life as I lose myself in the greater concepts of imagined worlds and people. When I finish a writing session, I feel great about myself and close to euphoria. The release resets my spirit and helps my enjoy life.

I recently came across the concept of "flow" as defined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. In 1975, he identified a heightened state of awareness that he dubbed flow.

I learned about this in the book "Driven to Distraction at Work" by Edward M. Hallowell, MD. He summarized Csikszentmihali's research like this:

"In flow a person becomes so immersed in what he is doing that he loses self consciousness altogether. He gets so into what he is doing that he merges with the action he is involved in, becoming one with it. He loses sense of time, even awareness of biological needs and drives."

I appreciate the phrase "merges with the action" because that's how I feel when I write fiction. The action is right there in my head, like I'm watching a mental movie and making my best efforts to describe the scene with text.

Dr. Hallowell went on to write:

"In flow a person experiences life at its peak, its most joyful, its most intensely fulfilling."

This explains why I feel so good after a fiction writing session. I'm fulfilled and joyful about my accomplishment.

The purpose of Hallowell's book is to help people reduce distraction and focus so they can return to a productive state. He goes on to say that the skill of entering flow can be cultivated. I agree. As a daily writer who endures many distractions, I've developed the ability to move in and out of fiction writing. When it's time to do it, I segregate myself and do it. Maybe my Muse does not always answer, but she's pretty accustomed to taking my call and not sending me to voice mail.

According to Dr. Hallowell:

"With practice you can learn to enter flow regularly. The key is to engage in some activity that both matters to you deeply and is challenging, so that you have to stretch."

Right now I am reviving my skill of entering my fiction writing flow. For numerous life reasons, I've been prevented the last nine months from doing what I love most. But I have been pecking away slowly at a new fantasy story. For the last three days, I've engaged in daily writing sessions. Blissful satisfaction greeted me at the completion of each session, and I'm determined to make time in my life again to write more novels.

Dr. Hallowell wrote that writing is an activity that lets some people enter a flow state if it matters to them and they want to meet the challenge. He also said the professional athletes enter flow as well. It can happen to all types of people in any number of circumstances as long as they are engaging deeply and want to achieve something.

If you're struggling with focus and perhaps worry that you're letting your gadgets screen suck your time too much, I recommend Hallowell's book. It contains insights and great advice.

Judgment Rising only $0.99 at Google Play Books

If you're in the middle of reading The Rys Chronicles fantasy series, this is the best time to grab the third book, Judgment Rising, on Google Play. Its price is reduced to $0.99 from $4.99 until the end of March.

Judgment Rising is a sweeping epic fantasy that pits an expanding human empire against the magical rys. The humans only think they have a chance because they are allied with ancient enemies of the rys. They are two tabre who have emerged from thousands of years of hibernation to take their revenge for the destruction of their realm.
Right now, this novel is $0.99 at Google Play worldwide. The sale price will be converted to other currencies. The novel opens five years after the events in Union of Renegades and The Goddess Queen. Although it is steeped in the events that preceded it, I designed the story so that it would be interesting to people even if they had not read the other two books. It introduces some new characters and gives the older characters new challenges to overcome.

About the novel:
To the victors go the spoils, and Shan and Dreibrand have flourished for five years as the leaders of their respective kingdoms. Allied by friendship, they greet the future with excitement and grandiose plans.

Dreibrand counts on his relationship with Shan to protect him from the encroaching Atrophane Empire as he carefully avoids direct confrontation with his former countrymen, now under the undisputed leadership of his old rival Sandin Promentro.

But a greater malice than imperial ambition threatens the new lords of the Wilderness. The long dead civilization of Nufal, where Dreibrand and Miranda nurture their fledgling kingdom, has not forgotten the brutal genocide of its ancient war with the rys. The ghosts of Nufal may have been extinguished but their avengers remain. The inheritors of Onja’s wealth and lands will now battle the nightmare of their judgment rising.
On sale through March 31st for 99 cents at Google Play

Quick facts about uploading Epub or PDF files to Google Play

Because I often side load content onto my Android tablet, I've seen the message asking me to upload to Google Play when I open a side-loaded ebook. This naturally made me wonder why I might want to upload books to Google.

The basic benefit is you make the ebook part of your documents within your Google account. This means you can retrieve them from most any computer and not have them stored solely on a single tablet. It's a convenient way to use a cloud system for accessing content like ebooks.

While looking into the topic I found this article about uploading Epub or PDF ebooks to Google. Along with some clear how-to advice, the author included the tidbit that file sizes needed to be below 100 MB in size and without DRM protection. Other than that, uploading ebooks in those two formats only required logging into a Google account, visiting the Books part of the Play Store and clicking on the upload files button.

As well as providing storage for personal ebook content, an entire ebook store is part of Google Books. This part of the Play Store serves over 60 countries. In late 2013 I finally got off my duff and added my books to its catalog. So far I have received many 5-star reviews and sales are rising.

Most people try out my fantasy series by reading one of the free series starters. I have three fantasy series right now: Werewolves in the Renaissance, Rys Rising, and The Rys Chronicles.

Want some exciting historical fantasy to read on Google Play?
Then try Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale. It's free on Google Play so readers can discover my newest fantasy series Werewolves in the Renaissance.

Start reading this werewolf book on Google Play. The store's app works on Android devices, computers, and iPad and iPhone.

Up next is the free fantasy on Google Play Rys Rising: Book I. This novel begins the Rys Rising fantasy series that continues in Savage Storm, New Religion, and Love Lost.

Be swept away by epic adventure in a magical world and read Rys Rising for free on Google Play.

Union of Renegades: The Rys Chronicles Book I is a free Google Play fantasy book. After it comes The Goddess Queen, Judgment Rising, and the conclusion The Borderlands of Power.

Make this the year you learn home canning with my short 99-cent ebook guide

For part of my adult life I was jealous of people who could can fruits and vegetables at home. I admired their beautiful jars of peaches and relish. As a person who has always enjoyed growing food, home canning loomed as an important skill for me to learn.

So one day I got over my fears of putting up jars of food poisoning and taught myself home canning. I reasoned that it could not be that difficult. Mason jars are for sale everywhere and millions of people do it all the time.

Just like me you can easily acquire the skills to become a home canner, using at least a boiling water bath and maybe one day even a pressure canner. The pressure canner by the way does a divine job on tomato sauce and also enables you to can soups, stocks, and other low-acid foods.

I share my knowledge in a short ebook. It's a fast read and contains the advice you need to start preserving food at home. Whether you get the information from my ebook or someone else's book, just know that to successfully put up food safely all you need to do is:

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!

This mostly means you process the food for the time required. Easy.

About the Home Canning Guide For Everyone Who Eats by Tracy Falbe(If you're eyeballs are busy, this guide is also a home canning audiobook.)

Preserve the bounty of your garden, support local growers, claim total control over ingredients, increase your food security, and enjoy great tasting foods that beat the pants off of anything from a factory. All of this is possible with home canning, and you are absolutely capable of mastering this easy-to-learn and affordable food preservation method. Once the commonplace domestic art of most households, home canning faded for a while but is again attracting a new generation of enthusiasts. This short guide quickly presents everything you need to know to safely preserve delicious foods like jams, fruits, relishes, pickles, soups, and most importantly tomatoes. Nothing at the store tastes as good as homemade tomato sauce preserved from tomatoes the day they were picked at the perfect peak of ripeness. Stop wondering if you could can food in your home kitchen and start doing it. This guide is written from the direct experience of the author who uses both the boiling water bath and pressure canning methods to preserve a variety of foods.
This guide specifically addresses how to use a boiling water bath and a pressure canner. You will also learn how to easily decide which one you should use for any specific food. The principles of safety and how to prevent food spoilage are explained. A selection of recipes for popular foods is also included with a detailed emphasis on ways to preserve tomatoes and applesauce. Advice on ways to find affordable fresh local produce is also offered. If you are interested in affordably improving the quality of the food you eat, supporting local food, and expanding the productivity of your home garden, then you definitely need to learn home canning.

Werelord Thal Earning High Ratings at Google Play Store

Since adding Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale to the Google Play Store in late November 2014, I have gained 14 ratings from readers. The reader ratings together average 4.8 stars. That's really good and very validating to me as the writer. None of these ratings were solicited by me. They are genuine organic reactions from readers who freely chose to read Werelord Thal without any sense of obligation.

These rating reflect the reactions of U.S. readers. I don't know if this historical fantasy novel has received any ratings in other countries. I think Google shows me the U.S. store by default because Google decides what I want to see these days.

Werelord Thal is free at the Play Store.

Marketing my novels has always been difficult, and I had not gotten much traction for Werelord Thal since its publication in November 2013, so it had remained obscure, except at iBooks where it is also gaining 5-star reviews. Thankfully it's gaining some attention among readers at the Play Store.

It's nice to know people are enjoying this story. It's my ninth novel, and a departure from my previous eight epic fantasies set in the world of the Rys. I know that my fans were hoping for more Rys novels, but after writing well over 1 million words in that setting, I felt that it was time to move on as artist. And over 1 million words of narrative cannot be described as short-changing my fans. I think it would have been a greater disservice to press on trying to write more Rys books when I personally felt that they were complete. I did not want to create stories that were tired or forced, like can happen when series go on and on for no good reason.

That said, I'm immensely proud of the eight novels of the Rys World. These works consist of two series: The Rys Chronicles and its prequel Rys Rising.

Readers can sample all of my series for free because the first books are free ebooks.
See more about my free ebooks below. The links there go to the Play Store. If you want to find other sources, please use the retailer links on the left-hand sidebar.
