New 5-star review at iBooks for Werelord Thal

It is always a pleasure to get feedback from a happy reader. I saw that Werelord Thal: A Renaissance Werewolf Tale recently received another 5-star review at the iBooks U.S. store.

The reader called it a "great adventure" and added that "The love story between Thal and Altea was good although it was a bit short"

I thought I would comment about the love story being short. It's a fair comment. As a writer I've been trying to make my novels a little shorter. Werelord Thal was my 9th novel and came it at around 160,000 words. Not a little one, but certainly shorter than my other 8 epic fantasies that I wrote before it.

The love story between Thal and Altea was only one part of the story I was telling. Although my stories have romantic elements for sure, romance is not the only aspect of my storytelling. I had so much I wanted to accomplish in Werelord Thal. I had to research its 16th century setting in Bohemia and craft a historically authentic narrative. I also explored witch hunting, academia, the Jesuits, Gypsies, nobles fomenting for Protestantism, traveling musicians, and a Condottiere leader of mercenaries.

Perhaps I could have given Thal and Altea a little more time for the romance to build, but they were caught up in hectic and dangerous circumstances that thrust them into each other's arms.

The new review at iBooks mentioned a desire to "see their relationship grow in book two." Now that the sequel Journey of the Hunted is published, I can say that their relationship does develop, and I have some shocking things planned for their third adventure if I can get my life under control enough so I can sit down and write it.

Until then, there are 2 complete novels now in the Werewolves in the Renaissance series.

Excerpt - A love scene from Journey of the Hunted

Journey of the Hunted, as the second book in the Werewolves in the Renaissance series, shows a romance in progress. The hero and heroine Thal and Altea fell in love in the first book and are now starting an adventure as a couple. Thal must protect her as they try to reach his father's stronghold in the distant Tantras Mountains. And she begins to adjust to life as the wife of a werewolf.

In the following excerpt embedded here from Slideshare, I present a love scene. The happy couple are freshening up before dinner at an old inn where they intend to celebrate their recent marriage and hopefully avoid bounty hunters.

Free books rule top fantasy books at Google Play

It's not surprising that the top "selling" fantasy books at the Google Play Store are dominated by free offerings. Many authors like myself use free ebooks to attract readers. It's an effective strategy more or less.

The screenshot shows the top four titles right now. The first two are box sets.

Next comes a deserving title from the public domain. H.G. Wells I suppose is far past fretting about his career and attracting readers, but he still provides good reading.

I only had to scroll down three rows on the top fantasy books to find paid titles, so readers at the Play store do spend money too. I offer three free series starters at that store and can report that they do generate sales of subsequent titles.

Hopefully some day one or all my fantasy books will be appearing on the top selling list. I added all my fiction to Google Play at the end of November, so I'm only starting to get some traction in that marketplace. Thus far, my free books have been well received and are maintaining ratings above four stars.

Union of Renegades Hits No. 1 in Fantasy Romance at Kobo

Last night I noticed that Union of Renegades had made a big jump in the epic fantasy and fantasy romance charts at Kobo Books. My novel had been doing well since summer, first entering the top 50 and then staying around the top 20 in recent months. And then this morning it showed up at number 1 in the fantasy romance category!




It's always a thrill for an author to see a novel hit number one in anything. I hope the people reading Union of Renegades are enjoying it. The story has strong elements of epic adventure and magic along with a romance between the hero and heroine. He's a disgruntled military officer and she's a slave trying to escape the onslaught of the brutal empire he serves.

I suspect it has gotten some extra love because publishers are waiting until closer to Valentine's Day to release new titles, especially in the romance category. This is only speculation. Whatever the reason Union of Renegades is doing so well, it deserves to be there. Over the years thousands of people of enjoyed it along with the rest of the books in the series.

Harry Potter books added to Oyster

The ebook app Oyster just gave fantasy fans a new reason to pay for their reading with a monthly subscription. The Verge reported that all the Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling would be added to the catalog.

In addition to this inclusion of the popular fantasy books, the Oyster catalog is now up to one million titles thanks in part to a new deal with MacMillan that licensed much of its backlist for distribution through the app.

My own titles are also available at Oyster. I have not mentioned them here very often because I can't figure out a way to link to my titles within the app in order to promote them on the Internet. (If Oyster is listening, it would be brilliant of you to provide author tools so we can market our work within your system to readers.)

For those Oyster subscribers interested in discovering all the hot indie fantasy available in the catalog, I imagine you can find my titles by searching for "Tracy Falbe" within the app. 

I have collected some royalty payments from Oyster since it began, so I know that people do occassionally find my books there.

Publishers Weekly reports rising sales for Google Play books

Find a new series to read with a free ebook by Tracy Falbe at Google Play.
I'm not surprised to see this news about ebook sales going up at Google Play. Its the store that Android tablets point you to pretty much whenever you want an app. And then you discover that there are movies, TV shows, and music there too.

According to a Publishers Weekly article Google Play has a substantial ebook footprint worldwide. Sixty five countries can get books from Google. And 21 of those countries joined the marketplace in just the past year.

Tom Turvey, Google’s director of strategic partnerships, was quoted saying that its ebook segment was growing and revenue was going up.

My sales have been rising every month since I started adding my fantasy books to the Play store. So far I have three free ebooks introducing all three of my series at Google Play, and sales of subsequent titles are beginning to appear, mostly in the United States, Australia, and Great Britain. I've had free downloads in many more countries including Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, India, and Italy.

Turvey went on to say that nonfiction has been doing well at Google, and the company wants to focus on expanding its reach in that market.

I guess I should take that as a hint to get my three nonfiction titles into the Play store.

Until then people looking for a new series to enjoy can sample one or all of my series starters.

Surge in Customers at iBooks Hits One Million a Week

I'm impressed by the amount of new iBooks customers Apple just made public. This article at Gigaom reported that about one million new customers a week are visiting the iBooks store to get ebooks. The surge started with the fall release of IOS8 that included iBooks as a preinstalled app. Before it had been something a person had to search for, so many Apple users were probably unaware of it.

The figure was released during a public appearance by the Director of iBooks Keith Moerer at the Digital Book World conference in New York City.

Moerer went on to say that the rise in iBooks sales are coming through Apple phones, especially the models with larger screens that make ebook reading viable.

He also made a point to mention that content suppliers received the same terms on the sale of iBooks whether they are self published or associated with a publisher.

This is a point that I appreciate. It's always galling to know that a big company gets a better rate than a small supplier like myself.

My novels at iBooks are perfectly able to compete with fiction even from the largest publishers. The Apple audience has always responded well to my fantasy books that often earn 5 and 4 star reviews. My sales at the iBooks store have been consistent for years. Although I never break out as a best seller, at least I've connected with a steady stream of readers since distributing my fiction to iBooks beginning in 2010.

With the growing use of the iBooks store I can hope to sell more through that outlet.
