Pray For Dawn Is Out!

Yes, it's official! Pray for Dawn is on the shelves today. Hit your bookstores and help support the Dark Days series. You don't want to miss out on what Danaus has to say about Mira! If you can't find it on the shelves, ask someone in the bookstore. They are always happy to help!

In the meantime, I've over at Over the Edge. They are giving away a copy of Pray for Dawn so leave a comment to enter to win!

I'll be popping around the Cincinnati area signing books today and tweeting as I go.

I just want to thank everyone that has followed the series so far and those that are just discovering Mira and Danaus. I hope that you love the books as much as I do. I truly appreciate all the support that you've shown over the past couple of years!

Now go forth and read!

Longing for More Weekend

The weekend is over and I'm wanting more of it. I'm just not ready to get back to the dayjob when I've got so much writing that still needs to be done. I got a nice chunk of the edits done for book 6, but I still have a long way to go. In my fun time off, I did get to see "The A-Team" movie, which had some great explosions and stunts. If you're just looking for a great, blow-shit-up movie, this is the one for you. I also caught the UFC fight between Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin, who happens to be a local boy from Cincinnati, Ohio. I had mixed feelings. Chuck is a great fighter, but you have to root for the local boy at the same time. It was an awesome fight, but a bit of a heart-breaker.

In the meantime, the first of my guest blog posts that I have been working on finally appeared on the Internet and it includes a giveaway!! So, go to AmberKatze's Book Blog to see my thoughts on point of view and enter the contest!

There will be more guest blogs to come. Is there anything that you would like to know? Anything you would like me to talk about in the upcoming blogs? There's still time to get your topics suggestions in.

Rock on the Range Recap

I’m sorry that this recap appears to be a day late, but I spent a good chunk of Monday catching up on sleep that I missed Sunday night. If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll know that I kept a steady stream of updates over the weekend regarding the music festival I attended on Saturday and Sunday.

If you’ve never been or never heard about it, Rock on the Range is now a two-day rock concert that takes place at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio during late May. There are three stages and a massive line-up of bands every year. Some past performances include Velvet Revolver, ZZ Top, Evanescence, Breaking Benjamin, Buckcherry, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Three Days Grace, and many many others. This is my second time going in the four years that it has been in existence and I once again thought it was an amazing performance.

Day 1:

We arrived much later than we should have. As a result, we spent the better part of two hours in bumper to bumper traffic as we tried to park the car. Lesson learned: ARRIVE EARLY to get a good parking spot and avoid traffic. We missed Sevendust’s performance, but we could hear most of it from the car. I was also disappointed that I missed Violent Soho considering that I am a fan of their current radio song, which I think is titled “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend.”

However, we managed to get inside in time to Puddle of Mudd, which was awesome. Trekking from the main stage, we caught a handful of Adelita’s Way on one of the side stages before trekking back to the main stage for Papa Roach, who put on an amazing performance.

From there, we took a short break and wandered around. The thunderstorms we were supposed to have never showed up and the overcast finally broke up in favor of bright sunshine. In my group of four, three of us bought new hats for a little extra protection and some pizza for dinner while listening to Skillet. We popped by the PS3 truck to play some ModNation Racer and grabbed a free Monster energy drink before heading to the main stage to catch a little Deftones.

We finished the first day with Rise Against (Amazing), Three Days Grace (Stellar) and Godsmack (Killer). However, we left part of the way through Godsmack’s set so we could beat the traffic and get back to our hotel so we could order room service.

Day 2:

Morning seemed to arrive too early and no one seemed to have slept well. However, morning room service kicked the day off right and we headed back to Crew Stadium slathered in sun screen. The sun was out and it was hot!

The day started off on one of the side stages with Shaman’s Harvest. They were wonderful and I was reluctant to leave early, but we all wanted to catch Apocalytica, who took my breath away. I’ve never heard such sounds out of cellos. They were amazing!

We took longer breaks on the second day due to the sun and heat. We hid in the shadows and the PS3 truck until Bullet for my Valentine. While they have the coolest t-shirts by far, they proved to be a little too hard and heavy for me. We grabbed a little Coheed and Cambria on the side stage before heading back for Theory of a Deadman.

We listened to Slash from the distant shadows before going back out to the main stage for the rest of the night to listen to Seether, Rob Zombie, and Limp Bizkit. The last three were heard from the shade to utter comfortable darkness.

For me, Day 1 had the most consistently good line-up bands and was an immensely more comfortable day. However, I have to say that Rob Zombie put on the best stage show. Simply put: it was face-meltingly beautiful and I would love to see him again.

Other than the nonstop concerts, which were almost always on time, Rock on the Range was superb for people watching. Colorful mohawks are back in style along with kilts, t-shirts with explicit language, and tattoos. In fact, it almost looked like you needed a tattoo to get into the place.

In the end, I have to say that I can’t wait for next year. However, this year is running me more expensive than other in the past. Due to the spectacular concerts, I now need to buy new music for:
Puddle of Mudd
Papa Roach
Rise Against
Three Days Grace
Godsmack
Violent Soho
Apocalytica
Seether
Shaman’s Harvest
Rob Zombie

Stubborn Chapter Done

That stubborn, pain-in-the-butt chapter that I have been gnawing away at for the past few weeks is finally done! I managed to finish it this morning. It took only another 6 pages from where I left off last night so I am glad that I stopped where I did. I was also pleased/surprised by a comment that Mira made toward the end of the chapter. It was a cold, bitter reminder that Mira is still a very dark character at heart, despite some positive events that take place in her life in the preceding books.

At the moment, I have only 400 more words that I need to type to hit my minimum goal of 2,000 words for the day. I know that I used to be up to 4,000 words per day, but I'm trying to ease back into this writing thing. I'm still feeling a bit rusty and I'm trying not to push my hand too hard as I get back into the swing of things. I've crossed the 60,000-word mark and I am hoping to pass by the 200-page mark today, if not definitely tomorrow. I've noticed that after I hit the 200-page mark, it's a downhill rush toward the end. The book usually writes itself at that point and I'm struggling to keep up.

I'm glad it's Friday. I've got my usual personal trainer appointment at 1:30 pm. and then the rest of the day should be mine. It's sunny out, but still a little chilly. I don't know what's on the agenda just yet. I might try to get a little more writing done now that I am to the chapter that I have been looking forward to. It's a chapter I promised to write for my agent not long after she signed me as a client. Unfortunately, it took my six books to finally get to that scene. Besides writing, my only other plan for the weekend is to head to a local watering hole to catch the UFC fight and eat some bad-for-me food. (I'm practicing my bad-food-eating habits now for vacation.) If I'm lucky, I'll remember to start making some lists of things I need for vacation. It's just a handful of days away now.

Baby's Got a New Look

I'm still technically broken. My wrist and hand are still causing me pain, but not as much as they used to. I'm not wearing my brace like I'm supposed to, but I just can't type with the damn thing. Luckily, I go see the bone doctor next week and he can give me final clearance. **Fingers crossed**

In case you missed it, I have officially posted the cover for Pray for Dawn, which just looks awesome. For a peek, check out my website. You don't want to miss it.

Also, if you're interested, I have posted a countdown widget on my Blogger account for Pray for Dawn. We've got less than 91 days until the release. It still sounds like a lot, but it's winding down.

In the meantime, my website designer and I have been busy little bees. We've completely re-vamped my website so that it not only has a completely different look, but it also contains piles of new goodies. You haven't seen it yet?!?!

Stop by www.JocelynnDrake.com !

Check out new character sketches, music playlists that remind me of the characters, essays, and even some deleted scenes that I dug out of the scrap pile. This website demands exploring!

I am still searching out the site for bugs and little typos so the site is going through some minor tweakage, but the vast majority of the content is there. Enjoy!

Good Writing Session Happy Dance

Yeah, I'm just throwing words together in the title now. I am happy to report that I put in more than 4,000 words today, which is starting to put me back on track again. I'm running behind, but I'm beginning to realize that running behind must be a natural state of being for me. I guess that's why I'm generally smart enough to figure in extra time for me to be running behind.

But now I'm babbling. I didn't get to write on Sunday as I had planned because I spent the better part of four hours pulling together, organizing, and calculating receipts for my tax accountant. I have my appointment to do my taxes on Wednesday and I'm dreading it. I know that I owe, but I'm afraid to ask how much. Fingers are crossed that the next royalty check is a big one so that it covers 2009 taxes.

Turning to today, I was able to jump into a fun chapter that brings back a character that I introduced in Dawnbreaker -- Shelly the earth witch. Shelly is a lot of fun because she is in many ways the exact opposite of my own personality. She can be really hard to write, but at the same time, I love the way that she manages to get under Mira's skin.

Tomorrow brings chapter 13, which is drawing in more characters that have not appeared in the series in a while. I can't wait!

On a scarier note, I have another training appointment tomorrow. The one on Friday was great and I feel like I'm back in the swing of things. However, before I start my work out tomorrow, we have to take measurements. Once a month, we take measurements to make sure that inches are being gained and lost in the right places. I'm dreading mine. I'm afraid that I haven't lost any inches yet. (sad sigh) Wish me luck.

Favorite Lines

My cup of coffee with its chocolate-flavored creamer sits before me on the table. Nine Inch Nails is playing on my iPod as it slowly recharges, getting ready for a long day of work. With a three-day weekend ahead of me, I'm ready to dig in deep and get the copyedits for Wait for Dusk complete done, well ahead of schedule. I keep reminding myself that the sooner I get the copyedits done, the sooner I can start working on Book 6.

The edits have been going well. The copyeditor's remarks are sparser than they were for Pray for Dawn, but I feel like I'm making more changes this round. It's not so much grammar and typos, but little wording changes to make the sentence or scene flow just a little bit better.

While I was editing at Panera a few days ago, I ran across a pair of lines that made me stop and smile. They just kind of captured the mindset of Mira in the scene and in a lot of ways, for the entire book.

"Valerio was walking temptation. He was dripping blood and grinning at me like a madman with a meat cleaver, but there was something right and warmly familiar about that grin."

Wait for Dusk is a dark, violent book. I know that my other ones are well, but this one seems to top the others in a lot of ways. I'm trying to find ways for Book 6 to take a step back from that edge before I make that final leap. I am happy to report, though, the Wait for Dusk does have a slightly lighter side that helps to ease some of the tension and blood-stained horror.

I'll try to keep a look out for more favorite lines and post them here for you to enjoy. Or would that be a form of torture?

The Arrival of Copyedits

Book 6 has been moved temporarily to the backburner, much to my chagrin. I'm really looking forward to diving into a new book and getting some writing done. I feel like I'm getting rusty. Too many days not actually writing new words results in dust collecting on the brain. However, I can't complain too much as I've only gotten the first chapter of the book written and hadn't gained too much momentum when I was forced to stop.

And the reason for switching gears? The copyedits for Wait for Dusk (Book 5) arrived on my doorstep this morning. With my publisher, there are several stages to the publication of a book. There's the submission of the rough draft, the revision (which can be repeated if necessary), the copyedits, and the first round of galley edits. I believe there is also a second round, but I'm not involved in that round (yay me!) In the copyedit stage, I look over the grammar and other logic-related changes made to the text of the book by a copyeditor, making sure that I agree with everything that has been changed. I also look for any grammar errors or typos that might have been missed. This is my LAST chance to make any kind of large changes to the manuscript.

Usually, I make some minor tweaks to the novel, but this time my editor sent along a list of things that I need to tweak so I will be including a few "inserts" as well. These are whole typed paragraphs that will be inserted into the original text.

Right now, I have the first 50 pages edited and I am hoping to finish the first 100 pages tonight. I've got approximately two weeks to get the copyedits done, but I am itching to get back to Book 6. Time is ticking away and everyday that I spend on the copyedits is a day that I'm not spending on Book 6.

Plotting and Scheming

All is quiet on this front. I stopped by the grocery yesterday to find that half of the city had decided to join me in its rush to buy bread, milk, and toliet paper ahead of today's massive blizzard that is supposed to hit the city. Keep in mind that a Cincinnati-sized blizzard is somewhere between five and eight inches of snow. Most regions to the north would scoff at such an amount, but here, we're not equipped to handle such amounts of snow -- physically or mentally. If it hits hard and fast enough, it could actually shut the city down. To make it worse, the snow is supposed to hit just before evening rush hour. It makes me glad that I work from home now.

I'm looking forward to the snow. We've been getting a steady flurry of snow for close to a week, but it's barely managed to cover the grass and the streets are completely clear. I want snow! I want a thick covering of snow so that the world outside my window is covered in a glistening layers of white. It'll be too cold to make a snowman, but I still just want the beauty of the wonderful white world of snow.

Of course, after a couple days, I'll be sick of it and ready for it to melt....

In the meantime, I'm chipping away at the synopsis for book 6. Some of the scenes aren't lining up how I thought they would and I'm struggling to remember my original thought process. The knot I'm stuck on will finally untangle itself, but I have to keep picking at it. My fingers are crossed that I'll get it done today so I can finally start writing the book.
