Writing Progress

NaNoWriMo is winding down to its last week.  Have you been writing this month?  Have you made some solid progress?

I'm behind on where I should be for NaNoWriMo, but I can't complain.  I've been making some good progress on a pair of projects, which I am quite pleased with.  For secret project #1, I haven't written as much lately.  I had to put it aside and work on secret project #2 for a little while because it has something of a minor deadline.  What's more, I broke an important rule of mine -- DON'T EDIT PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED PAGES UNTIL THE ENTIRE ROUGH DRAFT IS COMPLETE.  I figured since this isn't on deadline and not a contracted project, I can do whatever the hell I want, which is kind of true.  However, going backwards rarely ever helps you move forward.

As I worked on secret project #1, I realized that I didn't like the first chapter.  Oh, it's a good chapter, but it's not where a book should start.  The chapter wasn't doing everything it needed to do.  So, I went back and wrote a new first chapter.  I have since been going back through previously written pages, tweaking, filling in more worldbuilding, and adding some important information and characters.  I'm feeling a little better about this draft than I did initially.

Will it ever see print?  Who knows?  I'm having fun and that's the point.  Here's my progress on Secret Project #1 at the moment.

For secret project #2, I buckled down and got some serious pages done in a relatively short amount time.  It's not been my usual book writing speed because I've been doing some long-term plotting while I write.  My typical process is to outline the entire plot for a book before I start writing.  This one, I've got the major points and important areas in my head.  I know where my characters are headed and some big things they have to accomplish.  I just don't know how they're going to get everything done.  But I'm okay with that.  The first three chapters are down and I'm heading back to the synopsis for some tweaking.

Will it ever see print?  I sincerely hope so.  Here's my progress on Secret Project #2 at the moment.

And no matter how good of a writer you become, there's always room for improvement.  I think every author I know drifts back to one or two favorite writing books to revisit a key technique or maybe just as a pep talk when things get rough.  In celebration of NaNoWriMo, HarperCollins has 10 writing e-books on sale for $1.99.  I grabbed a couple myself.  Check them out.  For more information, please click here.

Where to Get Signed Books

After all the insanity of the past couple of months, I am going to lie low for November to get my strength up to tackle to holidays and probably a new book.  In the meantime, I think I've left you with enough to read for a while.  If you've enjoyed the Dark Days series and/or Angel's Ink from The Asylum Tales, and find yourself thinking "Gee, I'd like a signed copy but was unable to make it to Jocelynn's signings," I can help you.

Before leaving the bookstores, I signed some stock for my lovely readers to discover.  If you're in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area, Joseph-Beth Booksellers should still have some signed copies of my books.  They are located at:

2785 Dixie Hwy
Crestview Hills, KY
859-912-7860

If you're a little farther north in Ohio,
Books & Co. outside of Dayton, Ohio should still have several of my signed books.  They are located at:

The Greene Shopping Center
4453 Walnut Street
Dayton, OH 45440
937-429-2169

And finally, I left a really big stack of signed book at Schuler Books and Music in Lansing, Michigan.  They are located at:

2820 Towne Center Blvd.
Lansing, MI 48912
517-316-7495
P.S. If you aren't close to any of these locations, you can give Schuler a call and I think they might be willing to ship the books to you.  You may just have to cover the price of shipping. I'm not sure, but it doesn't hurt to check.

The Asylum Tales

It has been a wild this year, with multiple stories hitting e-readers and on the shelves.  I'm hearing from lots of readers that they heard about some releases, but not everything.  Let me take this time to get you caught up on everything that is out there for you to read about Gage, Bronx, Trixie, and the strange happenings at the Asylum Tattoo Parlor.

If you're interested in reading everything (and in order), the best place to start are the prequel novellas.  The are only available as e-books.  But the nice thing is that they are only $1.99 per story.  For less than 4 bucks, you get close to 200 pages of stories.  These two stories happen years before the events of ANGEL'S INK, providing you with basic background on Bronx, Trixie, Gage, and the city of Low Town.

The first prequel novella is THE ASYLUM INTERVIEWS: BRONX.  The reason it is called an interview is due to the fact that it tells the story of how Gage "interviewed" and came to hire Bronx at the tattoo parlor.

The second prequel novella is THE ASYLUM INTERVIEWS: TRIXIE.  The story
tells how Gage met Trixie and with her help, saved Gage's ex-girlfriend
Jo.

Now, if you finish the prequel novellas and are left thinking: "Gee, those were great, but I would still really like some more information before I did into a full length novel of this series."  I've got some help for you.  Gage and I have worked on several interviews and essays that provide great background information to the world of Low Town.

If you would like to learn about how the warlocks and witches came to dominate the world that Gage live in, please read his essay called "The Subjugation of the Races". (PDF)

If you would like a tour of Low Town, please read Gage's article called "Low Town Tour Guide". (PDF)

If you would like to read a story about Gage's life before being taken to the Towers, please read his story called "School Days." (PDF)

If you'd like to read my interview of the main characters of the two prequel novellas, please read my article called "Seeking Asylum." (PDF)

If you'd like to read about the time Gage met the Headless Horseman, please click this link.

Now you should be thinking that you're ready to read ANGEL'S INK.  (Of course, you don't have to read all of the above to understand the adventures of Gage and his pals in Low Town, but some people just like as many stories as they can get.)  ANGEL'S INK is the first full-length novel in the series.  It is available as both a trade paperback as well as an e-book.  What's more, the audio book will be available on November 13.
Here's a quick book description:

Buyer beware . . .

Looking for a tattoo—and maybe a little something extra: a burst of good
luck, a dollop of true love, or even a hex on an ex? Head to the quiet
and mysterious Gage, the best skin artist in town. Using unique
potions—a blend of extraordinary ingredients and special inks—to etch
the right symbol, he can fulfill any heart's desire. But in a place like
Low Town, where elves, faeries, trolls, werewolves, and vampires
happily walk among humanity, everything has its price.

No one knows that better than Gage. Turning his back on his own kind, he
left the magical Ivory Tower where cruel witches and warlocks rule, a
decision that cost him the right to practice magic. And if he disobeys,
his punishment—execution—will be swift.

Though he's tried to fly under the radar, Gage can't hide from powerful
warlocks who want him dead—or the secrets of his own past. But with the
help of his friends, Trixie, a gorgeous elf who hides her true identity,
and a hulking troll named Bronx, Gage might just make it through this
enchanted world alive.
After you read this book, you may be interested in my interview with Sofie, a character that makes an important appearance in the first novel.  To read the interview, please click here.

And finally, I have one last story for the Asylum Tales series that is currently available.  Gage's Halloween short story appears in the anthology BLOOD BY MOONLIGHT, which came out last week.  The anthology is currently available as an e-book, but it looks like Amazon will also be offering print copies on November 13.

Here's a quick book description:

Just in time for the scariest season of all, three popular paranormal
authors come together to tell original tales of romance where Anything
can happen under a Halloween moon . . .
Tempers flare and passions rise in Jocelynn Drake's Of Monsters and Men as the local werewolf pack clashes with the Winter Court's Wild Hunt . . .

In Terri Garey's The Ghoul Next Door, a witch and a warlock battle it out for possession of a haunted house, but the ghost may have her own agenda . . .

And, in Trick or Treathen by Caris Roane, a master vampire struggles to stay away from the mortal woman who enflames his very soul.

If you've read all of that ... well, you'll just have to wait until 2013 for my next Asylum Tales novel when DEAD MAN'S DEAL hits shelves.

Angel's Ink Is OUT!

Run! Don't walk. RUN to your nearest bookstore and pick up your copy of Angel's Ink.  Yes, after a long wait, my newest novel is now out on shelves and available on e-readers. You can now read about tattoo artist Gage Powell's adventure in the city of Low Town as he tries to evade warlocks, werewolves, elves and Death.

Help support my new series! Get out this week and pick up my newest novel.

Beyond that, I think you're gonna love this novel. It's got all kinds of insanity and creatures running around in Low Town, just trying to get ahead in life without getting cut down by the witches and warlocks living in the Ivory Towers.

And then, of course, Gage is just trying to get a little closer to the woman of his dreams.

Poor guy.  Gage just can't catch a break.  But then, his insanity is just there to amuse you.

How can you read it?

The trade paperback is out today.

The e-book is out today.

The audiobook comes out November 13.

And the book is also being released in the U.K on November 15.

If you would like a signed copy and live in Madison, Wisconsin, I will be stopping by the Barnes & Noble near the West Towne Mall this evening to sign whatever books they have on hand.

If you live in the Cincinnati, Ohio/Kentucky area, I will be at the Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Crestview Hills, Kentucky on Saturday, October 20 at 1 pm.  I will be signing books and answering questions for about two hours.

Finally, it's going to be a big party day! I've got a guest post and giveaway going today over at Literary Escapism. I would definitely check this one out.  Also, I'll be hanging out tonight on J.R. Ward's Facebook page talking about the new series.  Come check it all out!

More Good News Pours In

My readers are such sweet softies! I am loving all the entries for my "What Floats Your Boat?" contest.  I am so glad that I am not picking the winner based on my favorite response, but picking a winner randomly.  If you have not entered to win an early signed trade paperback copy of my latest book, Angel's Ink, please click this link and leave me a comment answering my question.

To all my United Kingdom readers, I have good news! Angel's Ink has been picked up by the U.K. branch of Harper Voyager so that the book will be released in the U.K.  I don't have a release date yet, but I have a feeling it's going to be close to the U.S. release date of October 16.

To all my lovers of audio books, I have more good news.  Angel's Ink is also being released as an audio book.  I've seen the cover and the book is being read by Michael Urie.  I don't have a release date yet, but it should be close to the book release date of October 16.

Finally, I have a new guest appearance today over at Donna's Blog where I talk about why I chose to write about magical tattoos and the interesting tattoo artists who create them.  Head over and check it out!
