Milestone: Book 5 out in October

d26db344-7a44-48ae-acf8-64218a560d20

I’ve reached a milestone. My fifth book, THE BULL RIDER’S REDEMPTION (Angel Crossing, Arizona), is out this month! In a little over a year I’ve written a lot of words — nearly 300,000 — with my first book published in June 2015. Celebrating with a lot of October book signings!

Home on the Grange: Mock Sausage

mock-sausage

This a World War I mock sausage recipe. It doesn’t use limas, but I think it would look similar.

It’s Friday so it’s time to go Home on the Grange with a recipe from my 1950 edition of the Pennsylvania State Grange Cook Book. This week I just couldn’t resist this one:

Mock Sausage

1 cup dried lima beans or 3 cups cooked lima beans
2/3 cup bread crumbs
2 eggs
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 tablespoon sage

Pick over and wash beans, cover with water and let soak over night. Drain, cook in boiling salted water until tender.* Drain off all liquid. Force through a strainer. Add remaining ingredients. Shape into form of sausages. Saute in a small amount of fat.

*Soaking and cooking instructions are for dried beans.

Home on the Grange: Labor Day NO MAYO potato salad

In honor of Labor Day, I’m breaking out a PA Dutch style potato salad recipe from the 1950 Pennsylvania State Grange Cook Book. The recipe sounds more like German potato salad to me, but who am I tell Mrs. Richard A. Landes (who is credited with the recipe) that it’s not Pennsylvania Dutch!

Pennsylvania Dutch Potato Salad10

I couldn’t find an exact pic of this no-mayo potato salad, but I think this is close.

Potato Salad (Pa. Dutch Style)
8 boiled potatoes
1/2 bunch celery, diced
2 hard-cooked eggs, sliced (if desired)
1 medium onion, minced
2 tablespoons parsley, minced
3 slices bacon, diced
3 eggs well beaten
1 ½ cups sugar
3/4 cup vinegar, diluted with 1 cup cold water (vinegar from sweet pickles may be used for part of this mixture or all of it
1/3 teaspoon dry mustard
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 teaspoon pepper

Boil potatoes in their jackets. When soft, peel and dice. Add the celery, sliced hard-cooked eggs, and onion. Let stand while making the dressing.

Fry bacon until crisp and brown. Pour off excess bacon fat. Beat the eggs. Add the sugar, spices and vinegar and water (or pickle vinegar). Mix well. Pour into hot bacon and fat.* Stir until mixture thickens over low heat (about 10 minutes). Pour over potato mixture, mix lightly and let stand in cold place several hours before serving. Makes about 10 servings.

*You might want to use a double boiler and make sure the bacon/fat is not overly hot, or you’ll end up with scrambled eggs.

#bookqw is ‘might’y fineHAR

Author Mindy Klasky has started a fun hashtag on Twitter: #bookqw. It stands for Book Quote Wednesday. Each week she comes up with a word, challenges authors to find that word in her book, then post the quote on Twitter. I’ve been playing along for a few weeks and thought I should share the fun here. This week’s word was: MIGHT.

Home on the Grange: Peach Long Cake

peach-crumb-cake

This what imagine this Peach Long Cake would look like.

Here in the land of chips and pretzels, it’s peach time. So in honor of that, I found this recipe, which is a dump into one pan sort of thing, in the 1950 Pennsylvania State Grange Cook Book. It’s just peachy!

Peach Long Cake

1/2 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 3-4 sliced peaches. Mix and put into 8×12 baking dish. Beat together: 2 cups flour, 6 tablespoons sugar, 4 teaspoons baking powder, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1/3 cup shortening, 1 large egg (unbeaten), 1/4 cup sugar, 2/3 cup milk. Put over top of peaches and top with 1/4 cup soft butter, 1/4 cup sugar, 3 tablespoons flour. (I would think this last is like a crumb topping — this recipe is a little sparse on directions).

Bake in moderate oven* 40 minutes.

*Moderate oven in this cookbook is 350-400 degrees.
