Conferences

As you all know, I’m at Author’s After Dark … which got me thinking about readers. Have any of you been to a conference with writers? If so, which one? Did you enjoy? Would you want to go? Why or why not?

What Book Started You Reading Romance?

I am off to AUTHOR’S AFTER DARK. I hope to meet some of you there! I’ll try to keep this page with posts this time, as opposed to going dark during RWA. So for today, here’s a question for you:

What Book Started You Reading Romance? For me? LaVyrle Spencer’s Separate Beds – started me reading … and ultimately writing! I recently reread it and though the point of view shifts were crazy, I still loved it. What about you? What started you and have you reread and still loved? Or reread and were disappointed? Or just never reread?

Miracle Mom

My mom had double knee replacement surgery on July 22nd. On July 24th she went to rehab. And on August 1 she went home. The pain was awful but man was she a trooper. She did her 4 hours of rehab and occupational therapy each day and she’s home. I’m so proud of her. Although she did tell me … Karen, don’t ever need this surgery. You won’t survive. Yes, mom has much more pain tolerance and stamina than little old me.

How’s your pain threshold? I really do have none.

What Are You Reading?

I”m reading SOPHIE OAK’s Siren Reborn – it’s available at Siren Bookstrand now … and will be at Amazon in a few weeks. I LOVE Sophie’s menage books … highly recommend if you like this genre! What are you all reading?

Stop the World …

I want to get off! That’ s exactly how I am feeling lately and I have had enough. Honestly. I have been too busy and too crazy in both my personal life and my career life. Between my mom’s double knee surgery that I had to miss because of RWA and all the professional meetings I had there, to the running around now that I’m back home – visiting her (NOT a chore!) and doing errands and things for next week’s conference (what WAS I thinking booking conferences so close together!? To missing out on time with local friends and rushing through decisions I should have thought through more thoroughly over time … lack of writing time … and I really do want to stop the world and take a breather. But since it doesn’t seem like that can happen any time soon, I need to find more time at home because I crave it. Like water and air, LOLOL. Does anyone understand what I mean? Did you ever feel so rushed, so overwhelmed, so … EVERYTHING you just want to STOP and just BE?

So excited to be here at Carly’s today celebrating my first print book! It’s been a long strange trip through my publishing journey but one thing that trip has not involved has been vacation. Like seriously. No vacations from writing or vacations from oh, I don’t know, real life. And by vacation I mean a conscious thought to take a break from something for no other reason than you can. I’m not talking forced vacations:) Now, there have been times that I haven’t written but I haven’t actually looked at those times as vacations. Those were more like my muse had taken an extended break and I wasn’t sure if she was coming back or not. I swear, each time, I’ve quietly been freaking out, wondering if she’s left for good and if the last book I wrote really was the last book I ever wrote.

But thankfully, those detours off the writing path have not been sustained and I’ve started writing again.

Recently, I *really* started writing again. I took an extended break from fiction because of grad school and well, let’s be honest, the social construction of reality doesn’t mix well with making two fictional people fall in love all over again. My brain was having a heck of a time multitasking.

But with summer “break” (and I use that term loosely because I’ve been working on sociology every single day), I’ve rediscovered writing. And not just writing but really enjoying writing again. I knocked out a novella in about three days and let me tell you, it felt amazing to finish that story. It was so awesome to just fall into the page, as Stephen King would say, and just lose myself in the characters and the story.

So I was recently home on “vacation” which wasn’t really a vacation as again. I was working on sociology every single day, but my brain seems to think it was on vacation. Funny thing but taking the stress off your brain apparently works to let it think creatively again. So there are now at least three more stories in the queue, waiting for me to free up some actual time and cognitive space to figure them out. And that feels really, really good.

So my question today for readers is what have you taken a break from only to come back and find renewed energy and joy in? It can be anything. A relationship, a favorite food, a song. Talk to me, Goose …xoxo Jess
