Kathleen Glassburn The garage opener didn't work so I stepped out of my BMW into the midnight rainstorm and manually released the door. After I drove in and before I could shut it an arm grabbed my waist from behind and a hand held a knife to my throat.

Kathleen Glassburn There are so many -- but only for a few days. I'm happy where I am. I read The Green Kingdom by Rachel Maddux in about 1975. My life was aimlessly floating and I was looking for direction. This book and the idea of an isolated kingdom where the few inhabitants built their own environment, lived by their own values, and defined their own important pursuits appealed to me. I re-read the novel in 2005 when my life had changed immensely (much more satisfying as I devoted myself to my writing among other things). I still appreciated The Green Kingdom. "First published in 1957, central to the novel is the act of creation -- from naming the plants and animals of the kingdom to bearing children." At the present stage of my life, I'm still sending out feelers, figuring out what's next. It would be informative to stay in the green kingdom for a little while.
Kathleen Glassburn I'm fortunate that I've never experienced this, and hope that I never will.
Kathleen Glassburn Fiction writing is magical. It is fun and informative to watch the pieces come together. I often wonder why that particular character or event or place surfaced. Some of the pieces are known to me and I'm amused to see them show up in a random way, other parts of a story come from someplace (my subconscious? or?) that is a mystery to me. No matter where the aspects of a story come from, I always learn something about myself or life in general once the Discovery Draft is completed.
Kathleen Glassburn Tenacity. Write, write, write. And, don't edit until you have a Discovery Draft (my name for the completed first draft that indicates to me what I have to say on a certain subject). Then, start the never ending process of re-writing. Each draft will become better. Somewhere along the line you have to say "enough" and start sending it out. If it doesn't get accepted re-write some more if the story means a lot to you.
Kathleen Glassburn I'm working on a short story to be sent out the end of June. And, I'm working on a collection of short stories that have been published. I'm also putting out feelers for a new novel, or I may re-write an unpublished novel.
I'm also promoting my novel, Making It Work, and the third dime novel in my Santa Fe Trilogy, "Going Back Home," will be available soon (working on finalizing it).
Kathleen Glassburn I'm fortunate in that I have considerably more ideas for stories than I will ever be able to write. The struggle is finding time to write as much as I would like to. I do write every day.
Kathleen Glassburn There is an entry in my blog at www.kathleenglassburn.com that talks quite a bit about where my ideas come from. The short answer is a person, a place, or an event will set me off on a fictional exploration.
