By overcoming the restriction we place on ourselves that something must occur on our timetable. If it’s not there--the flow, the inspiration, the words--then get up and go do something else. And just allow yourself whatever time it takes for that inspiration to come pouring through. Sometimes I write in the mornings, sometimes in the evenings during that quiet period when the rest of the world around me is at rest. Sometimes I require earplugs; sometimes it’s merely a matter of unplugging in the many ways that we have to unplug, and thus ‘plug in’. And I believe this applies to any form of writing because even a great mystery novel or love story or even if one were writing something nonfictional, there is still more in there than there is purely in the mind. One just needs to find the pathway to greater possibility and then find the time to walk it. What they will discover, on the other side, is just that… another side of themselves that waits patiently for an invitation to enter through the written channels. This way, we use our writing blocks as stepping stones.

In this, I can only speak for myself because I think every author would give you a slightly different answer. My answer would be a sense of freedom that I experience when I write, and the connectedness that occurs with that deeper part of me through the unveiling of the next word, the next sentence; the next chapter. It’s a liberation from a quite pragmatic, somewhat limiting world—which has in it’s own right been a blessing for me in many ways—and an ascension into a world that is also available with each new breath. Again, if one can muster the courage to do so.

Turn your aspiration into inspiration, and your inspiration into perspiration. That is, start at it, take your first step, and see what comes next. Find that deeper expression that’s inside you, that’s waiting for you and for that moment to come out. It’s been my experience that when we take our first step with a clear intention, the next step is provided for us -- by God, Spirit, Universe, whatever your belief. And one other thing: don’t allow anyone else to deny you the gift of living your dream by processing it through the constrictive consciousness of another. The greatest human achievements, advancements have manifest from the expansive state, where we stretch beyond the known, the familiar, and into the unknown and more familiar.

It's funny because inside myself I find a little tug going on between where I am currently, what is present in the moment, and what my conscious and higher self are collaborating on as let's just call it the next frontier for my work (and thus my growth). Currently, ‘we’ are working on two directions simultaneously. One is nonfiction related to my field, my profession, which is education. The other, which inspires me even more when I think about it, is a trilogy, sort of a Lord of the Rings with heroism, wise masters and powers possessed for goodness, shedding greater light on what it means to be human and what happens past, present and future when we come dangerously close to manifesting certain expressions, divine and otherwise, through human form that tempt us in areas that perhaps we should not enter. It draws from civilizations past and present, with an eye on a future very much determined by the choices made today.

Inspiration comes from us tapping into the truth of who we are. Going into the deeper chambers of my heart and asking myself honestly and without condition, ‘Who am I really? What have I come here to do? And what tools, what gifts have been provided me to allow me to do this?’ In the external the inspiration came through what I experienced in other great artists bringing forward their gifts, and just knowing that I wanted to experience that for myself. From there, it was a matter of having the courage to do it, which is from the root of the word itself, le coeur, French for ‘the heart.' Once in the heart, all is possible.

As with most fiction, I would have to say it is drawn from my own personal experiences in some manner. However, the main character in the story goes well beyond that. My own experiences provided merely a foundation I could build a story upon. When I began the book, I started with what was known, familiar, like setting sail from a familiar coast. What I quickly discovered, however, was that the currents would take me to a place that was greater than any place I could create on my own; greater than my mere mind could imagine. What I had to do was allow myself to follow the currents of greater inspiration, which can only be attained when one lets go and moves beyond the mind and into a more intelligent, more enlightened place. It is a very cool place indeed!
