Hi, Mikayla! I knew I wanted to be an illustrator before I knew I wanted to be an author, so while I always wrote for fun in grade school and high school, I didn't start taking it seriously until I was in college studying illustration. I wanted to get better at making comics, so I started to write and illustrate a webcomic as a senior project and kept updating it after graduation. I also wrote and illustrated some short stories during that time to experiment with different stories and art styles. This helped me build up my skills until eventually a publisher approached me to ask if I wanted to write and illustrate a graphic novel for middle schoolers-- which is how the Click series started.

When I'm reading for fun, I tend to gravitate toward fantasy, mystery, and horror. I don't like anything too-too scary, but I'm a fan of stories with ghosts and other spooky creatures.

Hi! Not a weird question at all. As you noted, her last name is a play on words-- and for the first few books Olive didn't have a last name, because I admittedly hadn't thought of one yet. I imagined her family as white and Italian American when I was drawing them which is why I chose Amato as the last name on her mom's side of the family in Crunch. Her father is going to appear in the next book and he's also white. When I was working on his character design, I imagined him as being of Irish and French decent.

I went to Girl Scout Camp as a kid and things were a lot more rustic than the camp Olive and Willow go to-- but when I was in college I was a counselor at an Arts and Sports centric camp and I drew a lot of my inspiration from my time there.

I'm glad you like my books! There are a lot of characters in the series, so I have a lot of different ways I pick out names. Some of the names were inspired by characters from other media, some are picked from baby name books, some are totally random names that just popped into my head, and sometimes I let my friends name characters.

Olive's parents are divorced (the topic is going to be explored more in my next book: Break) and Lucy's maiden name is Amato.

Writing and illustrating is currently my full-time job, but when I was working on my first few books I had a day job managing a shop.

Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying them. This is a tough question, since my inspiration comes from a lot of different places, so I don't have one specific inspiration. Some parts of the stories are inspired by things I remember from being Olive's age, others are based on things that happened to other people I know, and some events are completely fictional.
