I'm just gonna geek out on this question and say Middle Earth, man! I'm especially keen on sneaking through Moria, going into all those abandoned places in the North, wandering through Lorien.
Also, I'd love to be in the Black Forest as the Grimm's imagined it and see the kingdoms of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast fame.

Hey Arthur! I'm SO sorry. I didn't see this question :/
I was reading a book by Beth Allen Slevcove entitled, "Broken Hallelujahs" and she spoke of thin places. I thought it was so perfect for describing the place I was in last year when I wrote that collection. Grief most assuredly brings us closer to poignant, meaningful facets of our existence.

"I know."
P.S. I love the irony of Goodreads.

I just won this amazing Goodreads giveaway for FOUR books by Kate Tempest. I can't wait to read her poetry and novel this summer.
I also like to read at least one of Oprah's picks each summer. I have Wild on my shelf and have yet to read it, so it's on the list.

My Forever Favorite Couple is Heathcliff and Catherine. Why? Because Bronte recognized that love is not a choice and soulmates are not storybook. Love is raw, painful, real and, above all, necessary.
I'm also indebted to Bronte for illustrating so beautifully how eternal love is. One does not simply stop loving someone when they've become as much a part of them as a second self, as family, and that includes accepting all the flaws and hurts and pain that go along with being human.

(view spoiler)[Would it be cheating to ask if you had a certain actor in mind when you wrote about Cal in Tomorrow is a Long Time? I have my guess, but my lips are sealed ;-) (hide spoiler)]

Man, I can't remember if I've already thrown that answer out there in interviews or if I've just told people privately...I'll email it to you. I realize it may seem petty, but I feel like once it's out there, then that's the only person the readers can ever see as Cal, and if they hate this particular actor, then the book is spoiled for them, you know? But, we'll see if you got it right :0)

Ha ha, only a choice few, and only b/c I told them after they graduated. One, in fact, is the cover model for Finding.
It's definitely not something I broadcast, but when students ask me about my life, I tell them honestly that I write. There have been a couple that take a genuine interest, and I always tell them that once they graduate, if they still want to read one of my books, that I'll shoot them the name of this "really great author that I think they should read", but that I'll deny any knowledge of knowing this person :0)
It seems a but over-dramatic and silly to be so secretive, but after the witch hunt that ensued a few years ago on a fellow author/friend/former teacher, I prefer not to take my chances.
Thanks for the question!

For me, writer's block is dealing with the fear of not knowing what's to come after novels #4 and #5 (currently in my head but not fully written). Writer's block is the fear that all of my good ideas will one day be spent-that I will have told all the stories that I have to tell.
How do I deal? Read, read, read. And life helps as well. Life constantly throws new experiences my way, new people, new relationships. Stories build off of imagination but also inspiration from what we know.

The joy of creation, simply put.

1. Read a LOT.
2. Write for YOU, first and foremost.
3. Do it for the joy or writing.
4. If you want to make money, get a business, medical, or law degree :0)
5. Familiarize yourself with the definition of an anomaly ( Hint: That's what famous people are) and don't expect to be one.
6. Celebrate the readers who enjoy your work; that's the reason you're publishing, right?
7. Lather. Rinse.Repeat.

Growing up, my dad had this really creepy friend, whom I would describe as having Norman Bates-syndrome. You know the type: they're awkward and geeky and have few normal relationships to speak of. Teased as a kid, bad relationship with "mother", and about one tick away from a complete psychotic meltdown. Anyway, my dad kept up a friendship with him for many years out of misplaced sympathy. But this was a guy who would hug you for too long, watch you too closely...you get my drift. Even as a child, something in my gut would warn me that something wasn't right about him. I was always waiting for that "frayed wire" to snap. I still expect to see him on the news one day.
My latest novel looks at a young woman who is placed in a situation (while alone with a family friend) that-shall we say-doesn't end well. The rest of story will explore what it's like to pick up your pieces after a traumatic, life-altering event. It's about the people who "save" us, the ones that see us through the trenches of life, and about understanding the ones who drag us into those trenches.

I'm inspired through some strange channels. The "beast" in my first novel (which is a modern adaptation of Beauty in Beast, black metal style) is based off of one particular song that I discovered while searching around on Youtube one day. I first heard the song as a cover and thought the lyrics were haunting and erotic. I then found the original band. I was obsessed with the song and found the musician quite enigmatic and fascinating. The novel-I swear-literally just channeled through me based on my encounter with the music. I sat down and wrote Part 1 the same afternoon and the rest soon followed. The characters are completely imagined, of course, but based on that song.
Finding What Is originated from listening to the Ego Likeness song (Wolves) and-originally-imagining a young woman with an older lover who loses her mother but is trapped by a sexually menacing guardian, and who is looking to this older lover to save her. I listened to the song and imagined her standing in the rain at her mother's funeral, looking at her lover standing in the distance, who can't go to her because their relationship was secret; initially, that's all I had. Ironically, the novel itself turned out quite different (the older lover didn't even make it into the funeral scene).
Also, aside from people I know, loved, or have met-their "told to me" or imagined stories- like my first novel I often become inspired by a picture, a song, a face, (embarrassed to admit it) even celebrities, and make up characters which share a trait or characteristic that I find intriguing and want to explore further.

My third novel (which comes out this November) is based on my love of certain Old Hollywood actors and the movies they've starred in. I've read a good many biographies and memoirs from actors and their lives struck me as tragic, as did their inherent sadness, self-deprecation, and inability to hold on to any meaningful relationships. I took from that, created my own "Old Hollywood" heartthrob, and imagined what it would have been like if someone would have loved (and inspired) him enough to choose a different path in life.
