Having done lots (and lots, and LOTS!) of historical research for my Highland Menage series, I knew the MacDougalls were once very powerful, but as they were feuding with the Bruce clan, they didn't support Robert the Bruce and so lost much of their land and most of their castles to the Campbell clan.
As King James VI was wanting all feuds to end, he would want this one to be stopped as well. So I in "Bedding The Enemy" I had the king marry Laird Somerled MacDougal to Lady Margaret Campbell by proxy. No one told Somerled as he would never have bedded the enemy Margaret if he'd known. But, of course, he found out...

I've been reading chapter books since I was six, but didn't discover romance until I found the right anti-depressant. That let me believe there could be a Happy Today, which led me to reading books with a Happily Ever After. I learned my craft, writing regular romance, until I read Kate Douglas' excellent "Wolf Tales" series. I decided on cowboys so wrote "Cowboy Sandwich", which won first place in the RWA's Passionate Ink chapter contest the year it was published.

Two erotic menage series: cowboys and kilts. The Climax, Montana contemporary series features descendants of the 1870s Bride Train ranches in Tanner's Ford, Montana. Most of the men in the valley are tall, handsome, and dominant, and enjoy intelligent, strong-minded women.
My new Highland Menage series features 8 pairs of MacDougal brothers in late sixteenth century Highland Scotland. Unlike most men of this time, they appreciate women and insist she comes first, at least once.

Learn the craft of writing: editors can be hired but writers need to know about character and plot development. Turn off the electronic, other than that connected to a keyboard. Read, read, write, edit, and read some more. Go to different places to experience more than your daily slog: if you only see the same faces and places and hear the same things, it's difficult to think of something new. Save all your receipts for anything related to writing: the books you buy, places you go, partial cost of Internet, costs for research (travel, admission to events)... Most of all, write what you like, so it sings to you: if you are slogging through the reader will know it. And keep your readers in mind all the time -- you are writing these stories for people to read, so give them the best story you can.
