Really sorry for the delay Louise, I hadn't realised this was here.
I am not sure how other authors do it but for me I write down the initial idea, just that, the very basic start point. Usually I think about it for a while without writing anything down as I figure out what question I want to answer myself in the story. That's how I look at everything I write, I am trying to answer my own questions which can be difficult, a reason for everything that happens and how people /characters will react to certain situations. When I work out the questions, I start writing trying to keep the characters actions and reactions as real as I can, and I often have no idea where that will bring the story until it gets there. I know alot of authors plan everything out and have the ending decides before they begin writing, but with the story depending on people, often the end is as much a surprise to me when I get there.

To a degree, I do know most of my characters beforehand, alot I base physical appearance on people I know, it makes it easier to visualise them which I think is important but I don't plan alot, I like to let the characters do their own thing and let the story grow with what feels natural

after david gammells troy series I realised that things were always politically motivated, and that things did not necessarily happen the way we have always been told. I have always loved the troy story though not necessarily the illiad, honestly, its a horrible read in my opinion. I broke it down and took the parts I liked and started building a story around it. though even I wasn't sure how it was going to end until the ending

I cant remember where I read it but its something like "write a story every day for a year, its physically impossible to write 365 bad stories in a row". even accidentally, you could stumble on your lord of the rings or dark tower. read, a lot, and believe in yourself. enjoy what you are doing

the thought that one day you may be good enough that someone would feel about me the way I feel about certain other authors. looking up to them, being inspired by them. if I could inspire one person, that would be enough

(view spoiler)[Currently working on the sequal to "The Fall of The Phoenix". Its based on Agamemnons return to Mycaenea after the fall of Troy. The working title is "A heroes welcome" but anyone familiar with Agamemnon's family, the story of the orestes, or my work, will know that it doesn't exactly run smoothly. Expect lots of blood. difficult question and its probably different for every writer, though for me, I spend a lot of time thinking about my books during my day job so a lot of the time by the time I come home from work I have worked out some new angle that I am trying to get down on paper. also I sometimes work on more than one project at a time so if I get stuck on an idea for one book I switch to another. sometimes just that little break from constantly thinking about it can be enough
