I believe in starting with short pieces and learning the foundations of good writing. It takes less time to produce the full work, less time to revise, and the investment of time and energy is not so costly. You can also try so many different things in short form writing.
New writers should get in the habit of writing every day, whether it's journal or prose. Just like a marathon runner, you need to build-up your writing over time, exercise the muscle.
Then go for a novella, take part in a 30,000 word NaNoWriMo, challenge yourself to finish no matter how crazy and disconnected the prose becomes.

If I'm a little stuck or the outside world's negativity has intruded a little too far in, I start with reading what I've written so far. All the inspiration for the story returns and soon I'm immersed again, the characters live, their voices sound. It's easy from there...

I have a set of photos I've taken all over the world in places where I've set up to write. I always tell people, "Oh, that's my Kyoto studio," or, "That's my Bangkok studio!" Or Rome, New York, Denver or wherever I've sat down to write. In other words, the world is my studio. To me, that's the greatest thing about writing: having both mental and physical freedom!

I've been journaling almost daily since 1998. Like a runner going out for a jog, it's become second nature to know how to get going, even under bad conditions. I have rules for myself and do a pretty good job sticking to them. That's the learned part of the self-discipline.
As for actual prose writing, as opposed to just "what's on my mind" writing, I find that when I sit and read what I've written so far on a project, I get creative and inspired to do more, to push the story along.
When the story really takes off, I can't write fast enough!

In 2003, I visited the Monkey Temple in Bali. After seeing so many temples to more placid and "human like" gods and goddesses, it was jarring to be in a temple surrounded by statues depicting half-human, half-animal beings. I wondered if a version of Hell might feel like that, in close quarters with things not quite human. It was creepy!
But don't worry...the story that came out of all that is a fantasy comedy!
