Louise Wilson/Louisa Valentine married young, expecting to have one husband and three children, but life messed up those plans. The complications of family life provide a rich resource for her as a writer.

Louisa Valentine's themes so far? A love triangle. A secret baby. Infertile couples. Unconventional heroines. Star-crossed lovers longing for something - and someone - seemingly out of reach. Second chances. Her latest book is Still Waters Run Deep.

Writing as Louise Wilson she has also published prize-winning non-fiction books, including Margaret Flockton: A Fragrant Memory and Sentenced to Debt: Robert Forrester, First Fleeter.

Richard Ridge book wins Don Grant Award

An update on my last post: my book Richard Ridge: Convict, Trader and Bailiff in Early Colonial NSW has won this year's Don Grant Award, presented by the Family History Connections group in Melbourne.

The judges described the Ridge book as ‘the model of how a biography of an ancestor should be written’. It goes well beyond genealogy, as the life of a man born 260 years ago in Oxfordshire reveals m Read more of this blog post »

An interesting slice of history, using over 500 genuine letters to convey a story rather shocking in its implications, that a Prime Minister (of any country) would write such letters and divulge critical state secrets in this way. I became rather bor ...more

Precipice by Robert Harris
"A curious book that I enjoyed reading not so much for the fictional embellishments that Harris invents, which is quite a slight, thin tale of love, but for the factual, real life story between PM Asquith and Venetzia. It is quite a revelation to lear" Read more of this review »

Precipice by Robert Harris
"3.5

I am a great fan of Robert Harris's books which weave fiction with fact without affecting the fact. I was not, however, quite as engrossed with the subject matter of this story as I have been with his other works.

This is the tale of the affair bet" Read more of this review »

Precipice by Robert Harris
"Reluctantly I’m giving this a 3/3.5 as Robert Harris is one of my favourite authors and I’ve been looking forward to this book coming out for ages. It’s a fascinating topic and utterly shocking behaviour by our then Prime Minister but I felt it lacke" Read more of this review »

It was a treat to read this book, portraying so accurately the invisibility of older women, and the way women of quite different backgrounds interact with each other, finding ways to get along and work together. Let's put women in charge of the world ...more

Louise Wilson Eliza wrote: "So sorry Louise, I think I've managed to alter one of your Want To Reads above, I thought I was letting you know what I would rate it. Aaaaaah! Need a lesson on how to drive Goodreads..."

No worries. I've been too busy elsewhere to notice happenings on Goodreads, which I too find somewhat difficult to navigate! There are plenty of other books on my 'Want to Read' list - I hope to make a start on them soon.

Louise Wilson Eliza wrote: "Still trying to understand how Goodreads works! I would like to suggest reading Grace Calloway's books. I particularly like: 'Her Husband's Harlot'. Would love to hear what you think?"

OK, that author's new to me. I'll add that title to the list and let you know.
