“From beneath a table, he heard an ominous crunching sound. Bending down to peer under it, he was horrified to see Kloof, with the polished walking staff held firmly between her forepaws, her eyes closed and her head tilted to one side for better purchase. The massive jaws were crunching the shining wood. Half its length had already gone, scattered around her in small wood chips.
Hal winced. These were the same powerful jaws that had clamped down on the Iberian's sword hand as he prepared to attack Erak's unguarded back.
"Kloof! Bad dog!" he (Hal) hissed in a horrified whisper.
Kloof's eyes opened and she thumped her tail on the ground.”

“What kind of bears do they have in these parts?" Stig asked, his eyes darting from shadow to shadow among the scrub.
"Big ones," she answered, succinctly. "Big, bad-tempered ones at this time of year. They'll be coming out of hibernation and they'll be hungry and cranky."
"Good to know," Hal said. "What do we do if we bump into one?"
"Try not to. Bears don't like to be bumped. For my part, I plan to run."
"Can you outrun a bear?" Thorn asked.
She regarded him with a level, unsmiling gaze. "I don't have to outrun a bear," she said. "I just have to outrun you."
There was a long pause while the full meaning of this sank in, then Hal gestured toward the ravine ahead of them.”

“De hilfman fronste zijn voorhoofd. Hij vroeg zich af hoe hij een dreiging om het Iberische volk uit te hongeren, hun handel te vernietigen en hun leider aan de bedelstaf te brengen in diplomatieke bewoordingen kon omschrijven.”
