“You’re off the fucking rails, and I’m not having it. Now be a good little sociopath and shut the fuck up while you get taken in for medical treatment.” In”

“V sat back on his heels, crossed his arms, and continued to look down at the little bag of vampire. And what do you know. That infant sonofabitch glared right back at him. Vishous”

“Looking at herself in the mirror. And for the first time in her life, she respected what she saw. Bowing to her reflection, she said softly, “Pleased to meet you.”

“Do you want to hold her?” Qhuinn asked.
Xcor recoiled as if someone had inquired whether he’d like a hot poker in his hands. Then he recovered, shaking his head as he made a manly show of scrubbing his tears away like they were permanent marker on his cheeks. “I don’t think I’m quite ready for that. She looks…so delicate.”
“She’s strong, though. She’s got her mahmen’s blood in her, too.” Qhuinn looked at Blay. “And she’s got good parents. They both do. We’re in this together, people, three fathers and one mom, two kids. Bam!”
Xcor’s voice got low. “A father…?” He laughed softly. “I went from having no family, to having a mate, a brother, and now…”
Qhuinn nodded. “A son and a daughter. As long as you are Layla’s hellren, you are their father, too.”
Xcor’s smile was transformative, so wide that it stretched his face into something she had never seen. “A son and a daughter.”
“That’s right,” Layla whispered with joy.
But then instantly that expression on his face was gone, his lips thinning out and his brows dropping down like he was ready to go on the attack. “She is never dating. I don’t care who he is—”
“Right!” Qhuinn put his palm out for a high five. “That’s what I’m talking about!”
“Now, hold on,” Blay interjected as they clapped hands. “She has every right to live her life as she chooses.”
“Yes, come on,” Layla added. “This double-standard stuff is ridiculous. She’s going to be allowed…”
As the argument started up, she and Blay fell in beside each other, and Qhuinn and Xcor lined up shoulder to shoulder, their massive forearms crossed over their chests.
“I’m good with a gun,” Xcor said like that was the end of things.
“And I can handle the shovel,” Qhuinn tacked on. “They’ll never find the body.”
The two of them pounded knuckles and looked so dead serious that Layla had to roll her eyes. But then she was smiling. “You know something?” she said to the three of them. “I really believe…that it’s all going to be okay. We’re going to work it out, together, because that’s what families do.” As she rose up on her tiptoes and kissed her male, she said, “Love has a way of fixing everything…even your daughter starting to date.”
“Which is not going to happen,” Xcor countered. “Ever.”
“My man,” Qhuinn said, backing him up. “I knew I liked you—”
“Oh, for the love,” Layla muttered as the debate resumed, and Blay started laughing and Qhuinn and Xcor continued bonding.

“My Lord!” the doggen exclaimed. “Sire! Oh, it is good that you have arrived home before the storm! May I get you a libation?”
Fritz’s smile was like that of a basset hound’s, all wrinkles and enthusiasm, and the butler had a dog’s lack of time conception, his joy as if the pair of them had been gone for five years, not an hour.
“How ’bout a couple of bulletproof vests,” V said under his breath.
“But of course! Would you care for the Point Blank Alpha Elites, or is this more of a bomb-detonation occasion requiring the Paraclete tactical vests?”
As if the choice were nothing more than having to pick white tie and tails over your standard-issue tuxedo.
You had to love the guy, V thought grudgingly.
“It was a joke, my man.”

“Did you have fun with morale when you were in charge?” Wrath muttered to Xcor.
“All the time. The stronger the warrior—”
“The harder the head.”
“—the harder the head.”
As they finished the sentence with the same words, and in an identically exhausted tone, she was surprised. And yet they had faced the same issues, hadn’t they, both leaders of groups of males that were highly charged in the best of situations … and downright dangerous in bad ones.”

“Normally, Lassiter was the kind of guy who was so upbeat most folks couldn’t decide whether to shoot him to put everyone out of their misery … or just grab some popcorn and a Coke and watch the show.
Because even if he pissed you off, it was always hella funny”

“Xcor’s hands shifted up her body until he cupped her face. “It was all worth it.” “What?” she choked out. “All that came before this one moment where I am loved by you. Even though we must part, I can say that what I feel for you made it all worth it.” And then, with one final kiss…he was gone.”

“The King’s hand shot out so fast the eye could barely track it, and somehow, even without sight, he got the trajectory right, clamping a hold on the throat of his fighter. He didn’t even look in Vishous’s direction, his focus remaining on Xcor.
In response, Vishous didn’t defend himself, even as he was forced to gasp for breath, his goateed jaw dropping open.
“Don’t you love it when people know their places,” Wrath said to Xcor tightly. “When they understand those moments when they need to keep their fucking mouths shut.”
Xcor had to smile. Wrath and he were kin in some ways, weren’t they.
“Aye, my Lord,” he murmured.”

“Saxton, the King’s solicitor and Qhuinn’s own cousin, put his perfect blond head in. “I have those documents that you—”
The recoil would have been comical if Qhuinn hadn’t been up to his elbows in baby poop.
The attorney let out a cough. Or maybe that was a gagging noise. “Dearest Virgin Scribe, whatever are you feeding them?”
“Enfamil formula.”
“And this is legal?”
“For the most part, yes. Although depending on the digestive tract it goes into, clearly there are military applications.”
“Indeed.”

“Goddamn Lassiter. Dinner invite. Sal’s.
WTF.
The last thing he wanted to do was sit across from that angel and listen to a Reservoir Dogs opener about dick symbolism in Deadpool. The problem? His brother, iAm, did make the best Bolognese anywhere, and besides, if Trez didn’t show? Lassiter was just the flavor of asshole to turn up here in a clown costume and honk his nose until Trez lost his mind.”

“Xcor held onto the male’s shoulders and pushed himself back a little. Meeting Tohrment in the eye, he whispered, “My brother.” “Yes,” the male said hoarsely, a sheen of tears making that blue stare glow like a pair of sapphires. “I am your brother.” It was hard to say who embraced who, but suddenly they were both holding on, one upon another, warrior to warrior. “Sometimes kindness and love could be just as difficult as violence to witness. Sometimes, when you were on the outside looking in, watching two in-sync people was a scene from a horror film, the kind of thing that you wanted to look away from, forget about, banish the memory of - especially when you were about to go to bed for the day and facing hours upon hours of being alone in the dark.

“Quarter cock in Rhage’s case—”
Hollywood wheeled around and glared at V. “Okay, fuck you—”

“As Xcor got ready to leave the ranch just before midnight, he let his shellan check the fastenings on the bulletproof vest. She was very thorough, to the point where he had a feeling if she could have strapped herself to his chest, she would have. Capturing her hands, he kissed her fingertips one by one. “I am a lucky male, to be cared for thusly.” Fates,”
