“I blinked her into focus and examined her mouth, running my thumb over her tender, red lips. I brushed another kiss over them, as if it could alleviate any pain I might have caused, but I knew it’d never help. The damage my mouth had caused tonight wouldn’t be found on her lips, or anywhere else on her body. No, it was worse. So much worse. My words left the kind of bruises that weren’t so easily healed. The kind found buried inside.”

“I glanced around. “Did you come by yourself?”
“Actually, I drove up with Colby, but we are driving home tonight. We both have to work tomorrow.”
I frowned. “You aren’t staying the night?”
“I’m sorry. But I promise as soon as I get some time off, I’ll spend a whole weekend with you.”
“Where’s Colby?”
“Um, I don’t know. Around, I guess.”
“So what made you two come up together?” I nudged her. “Any new developments I should know about?”
“I’ll let you know tomorrow. I’m planning on seducing him on the car ride home.”
I laughed. “Why not on the way up?”
“I was scared he’d turn around.”

“The moments are too numerous to count. But day by day…minute to minute…Every. Single. Second. I fell deeper in love with you. And it all started…here.”

“We make a good team.”
That was an understatement. We made a fucking awesome team.”

“Mason must have been watching for me because as I pulled into a parking space, he came trotting downstairs. I turned off my car and stepped out.
With a huge grin, Mason wrapped me in a hug. “Miss me?”
“Not as much as you missed me.” Which was a lie. I’d missed him like crazy.
“You’re probably right.” He pressed a kiss to my forehead.
I smiled up at him.
He ran his finger across my cheek then tucked my hair behind my ear. “I haven’t had anyone to cook for me.”
I playfully punched him in the gut.
Completely unfazed, he grinned. “You hit like a girl.”
“I do a lot of things like a girl. And if you keep this up, this girl won’t be doing any of those things with you.”
He smirked. “Point taken. I’ll help with your suitcases.”

“Mason tilted my chin up. “So what do you think?”
“I think I like rule number one.” I tucked myself into his chest.
“Well, you know which rule I like…”
“Number four.”
“Four?”
“Yeah, it’s the one where you stop bringing up rule number three every chance you get.”
He lowered himself on the couch, pulling me with him. “But three is the fun one.”
I grinned up at him. “Won’t argue with that.”

“So now that you’re in like with me, do you think we should start color coordinating our outfits?”
She rolled her eyes and groaned. During the last half hour of our car ride, I’d hounded her about her confession. Mostly because I liked to see her squirm. Well, and because she liked me. I was freaking stoked. So I teased her about everything from the necessity of pet names to the value of posting couples’ selfies on various forms of social media to suggestions about our “celebrity” name—I was rooting for Macity.
“For what it’s worth, I’m in serious dislike of you right now.”
I laughed, enjoying this way too much. “We should also start having sleepovers…since you’re in like with me.”
She pressed her palms to her forehead then dragged them down her face. “Oh. My. God. I’m going to kill you before we even make it out of this car.”
“Tomorrow I’ll run to the store and get extra toothbrushes so we can keep them at each other’s places. Should I get his and hers towels too?”
She banged her head on the headrest.
“Too soon?” I pulled into the parking lot of the marina. “Okay, only toothbrushes.”
“I’m going to murder you with that fucking toothbrush if you don’t stop saying ‘in like’ with you.”
I parked the car. “You started it.” The overhead light popped on as I got out.
“Mason!”
I laughed as the car door shut.
Grumbling, she got out, and I greeted her on the passenger side.
“One more, then I promise I’m done.” I shut her door and pushed her up against it. “I’m happy you’re finally in like with me because I’ve been in like with you for a while”

“He’s wrong, you know. However glorified he made it sound. Maybe my perspective is skewed, but that’s not how I recall it.” I pulled out a head of lettuce and a knife. “After you, everything seems mediocre.”
Mason walked over and leaned on the counter next to me. “Thanks. Even if you’re only saying that to make me feel better.”
I placed the lettuce on a cutting block and chopped it for salad. “I’m not just saying that. You were there. You should know. It wasn’t just sex. It was super freaking hot and unlike any other experience I’ve had.”
He grinned. “Hearing you talk like that has me pretty turned on, but the way you’re murdering that lettuce has me kind of intimidated, as well.”
I laughed and set the knife down. “I’m sorry. I’m just so pissed. I can’t believe he was talking about any of this.”
“I really don’t think he was doing it to be an ass, honest. He was talking, thinking about the past.” Mason grabbed my hands and pulled me to his chest. “It just sucked to hear on my end and, if anything, I should be the one murdering the lettuce right now.” He tilted my chin up and kissed me. “Do you maybe have a tomato or something I can take my aggression out on?”
“Cucumber?”
“There’s some symbolism there. A little dark and disturbing, but I like it.”
Laughing, I pulled the cucumber out of the small refrigerator. “Have at it.”
He set it on the cutting block and picked up the knife. “You sure you don’t want to hack into this one?”
“It’s all you.”
I moved the lettuce to a big bowl then set it in front of Mason, who was moving the cucumber around the cutting board, seemingly unsure where to start. “You’re supposed to be murdering it, not trying to score a second date.”
“I’m going to be honest. It feels a little barbaric.”
I bit back a smile. “Okay, well, when you’re done sweet-talking the cucumber, will you coax it into the salad bowl for me?”
“Why? You going to toss it for me?”
“Yes, Mason. I’m going to toss your salad.”
He rubbed his chin. “Okay, why not.”
I nudged him out of the way and started cutting the cucumber myself. “Stop corrupting my dinner.”
“Hey.” He wrapped his arms around my waist. “I’m just helping. I have no idea what you’re talking about”

“Quit looking at me like that.”
He kept grinning.
“You didn’t see whatever you think you saw.”
“What do you think I think I saw? Man, that’s confusing.” He rubbed his chin. “Guess you should just show me what you’re hiding behind your back.”
“It’s girl stuff. You don’t want to see it.”

“Brinley and her boyfriend, Ryder. Maybe her roommate, Fallon.”
“That sounds cool. I’d like to meet your friends. Hopefully, they are more accepting of me than mine were of you,” she teased.
“No worries. My friends aren’t like that. In fact, I think Brinley’s accepting of everyone. She’s the kind of person who’d take in a vicious stray, merely because it’s lost and alone, regardless of the fact that it’s dangerous.” I scoffed. “Wait until you see her boyfriend. It’ll all make sense.”

“I wasn’t really sure how anyone knew when something big was about to happen. I think it was more like one of those moments that, in retrospect, could be pinpointed as the start of something. But the more time I spent with Felicity, the more I suspected that all my wrong turns had been leading to this. It might have been a winding road, but I appreciated the final destination that much more. And whether or not I’d convinced her of it yet, I planned to make her the last stop.”

“Felicity, this is my roommate, Fallon.”
She greeted me then tossed a smirk in Mason’s direction. “What’s up, Mason?”
“Not much.” He seemed tense, and I wondered what exactly this tiny little girl could say or do to have him that strung out. She really was tiny. Cute too. She looked totally harmless.
“So is this lunch or an intervention? Looks like you’ve been on performance enhancers or something.” Fallon poked his shoulder. “But I guess the real question is: Is your performance enhanced?”
Ah, there it was. But Mason didn’t even flinch. “So I hear you’re giving monogamy a shot. How’s that working out for you?”
My jaw dropped and I stared at Mason, but Fallon only grinned.
“Fan-fucking-tastic. Emphasis on the fucking.”
What in the world was wrong with these two?
Brinley turned to me. “Just ignore them. This is how we know they love each other. The day they stop doing this is the day I start to worry.”
Mason turned to me, like suddenly remembering I was there. He offered a sheepish grin then glanced back at Fallon. “You staying for lunch? We can make room.”
She shook her head. “I can’t. Cade’s in the car with Scout but I wanted to stop by and meet Felicity.”

“But meeting your aunt changed everything. It made me realize I could be so much more. I don’t know how it will happen or if it will. But at least there’s hope.” She pulled her feet onto the seat, tucking her knees to her chest. “Elise said she used to work the graveyard shift at this diner so she could have daytime hours free for photography. She said she’d work a wedding then go waitress right after. She went from champagne and cake to coffee and bacon. Evening gowns to truckers.” She smiled. “The weddings paid well, but the night shift inspired her. Isn’t that amazing? A five thousand dollar dress on a bride couldn’t compete with five thousand miles on a trucker’s face. She said his wrinkles told a better story than silk ever could.”

“She grew quiet and stared at our hands.
Too quiet.
I glanced at her. “Did I say something wrong?”
“No.”
I traced the worry line between her brows. “Then what has you so upset?”
She frowned and blurted, “I like you.”
I glanced back at the road. “Uh, I like you too, but I’m definitely not sure how that’s a bad thing.”
“No, Mason, I really like you.”
Wait…My head spun toward hers as a slow smile pulled at my mouth. She liked me, liked me?
“Watch the damn road.” She crossed her arms and leaned back in her seat.
I chuckled. “No fucking way. You’re pouting about this?”
“I’m not pouting. Ugh, it’s just so complicated. I don’t do complicated.”
“This isn’t complicated, Felicity. The complete opposite, actually. We like each other. Simple as that.”

“I looked around, noting how very dark and vast the ocean looked at night. “There aren’t any sharks out here, are there?”
Felicity glanced around. “Probably not, but you’d never be able to outrun them so, you know, why worry?”
“Wow. Thanks. You really are a ray of sunshine.”
“Told you. Set up for failure.”

“I rolled my eyes. “I know Isla told you.”
“Told me what?” He reached for his seatbelt and clicked it into place.
As if he didn’t know. I stared at him, refusing to play his game.
“Oh, c’mon, third date. Fifth date. Does it matter?” He tossed me a smile then reversed out of his spot. “It’s bound to happen eventually.”
Even though I was excited about the inevitable kiss, I’d be damned if he’d have the last word in this. He didn’t get to make a decision like that on his own. “You’re a little overly confident there. Who’s to say I’m going to let you kiss me at the end of the night?” I crossed my arms.
We rolled to a stop at the lot’s exit.
“Who says it will be the end of the night?” He flashed me a little smirk then turned onto the main road of Port Lucia. “Maybe it’ll happen when you least expect it. Maybe you won’t see it coming.”
His tone was all too amused and I kind of hated the way it made my stomach bubble with anticipation. But I schooled my expression.
“And what if I’m not interested in this ninja-kiss?”
He laughed. “Knee me in the nuts or something. I’ll get the hint.”
“You’re either very brave or very stupid.”
He shrugged. “Probably a little of both.”

“So you hate fish and don’t eat red meat. What do you live off of?” He poked me in the ribs. “We need to put some meat on your bones. You need a hamburger.”
“There’s this place down the road. Turn left on Coral. Lucy’s Café. She makes a turkey burger that’s good.”
Mason narrowed his eyes and shook his head. “Those two words don’t ever belong in the same sentence.”
I laughed. “Well, she also makes a chicken potpie that I would sell my firstborn for.”
“I don’t know if I’m comfortable negotiating our future children like that.”

“Mason: Thing is, your future…me…we’re happening, one way or another. And right now you may only be willing to give us one day at a time, but that’s okay because the future isn’t where you’ll be in 10 years or even 10 months. It can be as simple as 10 minutes from now...
Me: Well, I’m pretty sure I’ll still be annoyed with you in 10 minutes.
Mason: At least you’ll be thinking about me.
Mason: But in 10 hours you’ll be getting over it. And in 10 days you’ll know I was right. And 10 days from there…who knows?
Me: You’re a little overly optimistic with your timeline.
Mason: I AM the math genius.
Me: You’re insanely frustrating.
Mason: And always right.
Me: Or a giant dick.
Mason: Shouldn’t we save sexting for date 5 or 6?
Me: Gah!
Mason: OK, we can do it now. Geez. Calm down.
Me: Good night, Mason.
Mason: Way to get me all worked up then leave me high and dry.
Me: Well, here’s a parting thought. I’m definitely filled with the desire to do something physical to you.
Mason: That works.
Me: Strangle you, Mason. I want to strangle you.
Mason: Kinky.
Mason: One more question. Think we should establish a safe word?
Me: OMG. I’m going to hurt you.
Mason: Not if we have a safe word. See? I’m thinking ahead.
Mason: How about rutabaga? I’ve heard that’s a good one. You like that?
Me: Whatever ends this conversation.
Mason: Rutabaga it is.”

“I’m not gonna lie.” I leaned against the wall of the cabin and unabashedly checked her out. “It really ended the night on a high note for me. With our impending divorce hanging over us, I appreciate you trying to put a spark back into things.”
I’d caught her off guard, and for a second I thought she might laugh, but then she fell into character, flashed her sweetest smile and said, “You’re welcome. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a terrible headache.”
And I couldn’t deny how happy I was to hear her play along. “Wow, that’s cold. I thought we were reconciling.”
“Sorry, but I don’t reconcile on the first date.”
“So this was a date, then?” I held my breath, unsure if I pushed it too far with the flirting, but then she grinned.
“What do you think?”
“I think one day we’re going to laugh about your heart panties and our first date.”
She smiled and shook her head. “You’re never going to let that go, are you?”
“Are you kidding? We’re going to be sharing this story with our grandkids.”
“I don’t think our future grandchildren need to know anything about what’s going on under my dress.”
I smirked because she’d totally set herself up for this one. “So…we will have grandkids?”
“Oh my God. You’re too much. Go to bed, Mason.” She turned to head into her cabin and called over her shoulder, “And quit talking about my underwear.”
“I’ll stop talking about them, but no guarantees I can stop thinking about them.” Which wasn’t a lie. I’d already committed the image to memory.
She laughed again. “Good night.”
I smiled as I watched her disappear inside. “ ’Night, Felicity.”

“How many siblings do you have?”
“Three sisters. The oldest is Charity. She’s twenty-eight. Then there’s Serenity, who is twenty-four. And Hope is twenty-two.”
Mason’s eyebrow raised slightly, and I knew where his thoughts probably headed. Our names. Yes, we were all named after virtues. And yes, I was fully aware of the ridiculousness.
“So…Charity, Serenity, Hope and Felicity?”
“Between you and me”—I leaned toward him—“Charity is the most selfish person I know. Serenity is borderline crazy and nobody is more pessimistic than Hope. And me…well, I’m a ball of anger.”
He laughed. “I wasn’t going to say a thing.”
I stared at him.
He grinned. “Okay, I was. And point taken.”
I smiled. “My sisters are actually great. But so help me God, I’ll never give my children matching names, nor will I choose ones that will forever be their defining characteristic. I mean, c’mon, it’s like we were set up for failure.”
He laughed. “So what’s your full name?”
“Felicity Anne Daniels.”
“Your initials are—”
“Fad. Yes. I know. My parents are awful, and I can never get anything monogrammed.”
“Hey, it’s not so bad. I’m named after a jar.”
“Doesn’t ‘Mason’ originate from, like, a stoneworker or something?”
“Yeah, but my mom literally got it from the jar. Apparently, she loved eating my great-grandma’s homemade preserves while pregnant with me. One day, she’s staring at the canning jar and thinks I should name my baby Mason. The rest is history.”
I covered my mouth to hide my laugh. “Well, it could be worse. You could be named after what was in the jar.”
“No shit. I’m pretty sure if I’d been a girl I’d be named Strawberry.”

“He’s so fucking hot,” Isla whispered under her breath.
“Mm-hmm.”
She turned to me.
I blinked then looked at her. When I noticed her expression, I clarified. “Oh, the other one.”

“the next thing I knew my bed was bouncing and Colby was shouting, “Up and at ’em. We have fish to catch.”
I reached for my phone, wondering why my alarm hadn’t woken me. The screen read a quarter after four.
“You’re such an asshole,” I groaned as I rubbed sleep from my eyes. “I have a fucking alarm set. I could have slept fifteen more minutes.”
“Dude, what’s a few more minutes gonna help? Get your ass up.”
“Considering I didn’t pass out until sometime after three, fifteen minutes would have helped a lot.”
“Why the hell did you stay up so late?”
I finally opened my eyes so I could glare at Colby. “Wasn’t by choice, bro. This boat fucking sucks. You should be thanking me for not losing my dinner all over it.”
Colby laughed. Hard. And I fought back the urge to punch him in the nuts just to see how much he liked his stomach residing in his throat.”

“Hopefully, you like beer because it’s all I have.”
So much for crashing. My body was wide awake now. “Beer’s good. I just got off though. I need to change real quick.” I tugged at my work tank top.
“I’ll be here.” He grinned, and I couldn’t help but notice he had a perfect smile. Really nice teeth. God, that was weird to notice. But man, he was a seriously good-looking guy. Nothing I could pinpoint as the feature that made him exceptionally attractive; everything just came together nicely. Like those people who have perfect facial symmetry, which tricks the brain, making them attractive to everyone. He was one of those people. And my brain most definitely appreciated the flawlessness.
He was still grinning as I studied him, and it suddenly hit me, I was standing there. Staring. Geez. “Sorry. I’m exhausted from my shift. Sort of out of it.”
He nodded slowly, clearly not buying my excuse. “Well, get changed and come relax. We can bitch about our day, gripe about our aching bones, maybe get in a fight over whose turn it is to cook dinner.”
I stifled a laugh and played along with his old married couple reference. “Which will, of course, lead me into reminding you that my lasagna is never as good as your mother’s.”
“Ah, but we can’t forget, I always overseason when I cook.”
“And while we are talking about dinner, we should probably discuss the fact that dishes don’t wash themselves.”
“Well, if we’re going there, you might as well remind me that the floor is not a hamper.”
“Obviously.” My smile finally broke free. “Then I’ll complain of a headache, and we’ll call it a night.”
“Wow.” He leaned back and rubbed his chin. “I’m sorry to say it, but I think this relationship is moving too fast.”
“Relationship?” I raised an eyebrow. “We’re one dirty sock away from divorce.”
He laughed, and my chest fluttered because it was one hell of a sexy laugh. “Get changed and come on over. I’m eager to get to know my future ex-wife.”
With what I’m sure could only be described as a stupid grin, I said, “Be right back.”
