“And another thing,” added Mademoiselle Bénet. “You must not make the mistake of saying to yourself, ‘All French people are like that.’ There are bad people and good people in my country – as there are in every country under the sun.”

“Yes, very unhappy,” I murmured. “I loved her dearly but – but I could have been nicer to her. That’s what’s – making me – so miserable.” “We all think we ‘could have been nicer’ when we lose a dear friend.” “You didn’t feel like that, Charles! You told me that you and your mother were ‘very close together’.” “Yes, and it was true, but I remembered times when I was impatient inside.” I was silent. He said the stones were put here by the Druids – the same people that made Stonehenge.” “Then it is magic!” “I don’t know about magic. It’s an old place – that’s what the gentleman said – hundreds of years old. He said I wasn’t to cut down the tree or move the stones. “I was like father – everyone said so. Lewis was like mother, with fair wavy hair and cornflower-blue eyes. Willy wasn’t like anyone in particular; he had brown hair (which was always untidy, no matter how often he brushed it) and thin knobbly knees. Lottie was the youngest of the family; she was very pretty with big blue eyes and flaxen curls as soft as silk. Everyone admired Lottie but at that time I wasn’t interested in her, I liked being with the boys. Sometimes they were a bit rough but I didn’t mind – I didn’t mind what they did if I could tag along after them and share in their games.”
