“We cannot blame our own ignorance or stand aside when bad things happen to good people around us, be it humans or dwarves. To do so makes us culpable.”

“chairs and a throne of gold were lined along the dais. Impossible not to notice, a statue loomed above it all, each extended hand large enough for him to sit in. “Vandasal,” he muttered. “What?” Devigar glanced at him. “Oh. Yes. Our god.” Ian frowned. “How come I don’t ever hear you mention your god?” Gods were a curious thing to Ian. His own people relied on the spirits of their ancestors for guidance, although he had never heard of such spirits actually appearing before someone, at least not during his lifetime. “I know little of gods, and I know even less of Vandasal other than brief mentions in the texts I have studied.” “What is there to know?” Devigar shrugged. “Gods are unknowable. It is not as if Vandasal watches over us, gives us his blessing, or even cares.” “Why do you say that?” “What god would allow his people to dwindle as we have? We are struggling, Ian.” He looked up at the statue and snarled. “If Vandasal ever were real, he gave up on the Tahal Clan long ago.” Ian was taken aback, having never before heard such anger from Devigar. The old dwarf’s distaste for his god left him disturbed and at a loss for words.”

“To the west, beyond the buildings and walls of the Lower Hold, the sun licked the treetops. It would soon set and bring night with it. By then, Vic would have cleaned up, eaten, and be lying in his bunk. They followed the gravel path toward the bunkhouse. As they rounded a building, a pair of dwarf guards came into view. With them was a taller, thinner figure in tan robes. Vic forgot his hunger and exhaustion. “Ian!” Ian nodded as he approached. “Hi, Vic. Hi, Brady. I was hoping I might run into you guys.” Vic said, “Where have you been? It has been weeks since I last saw you.” “I have been busy. Summer has come to an end, and with the new season, Devigar has given me additional duties.” The statement was a shock to Vic. “We have been here an entire season?” “I am afraid so.” Brady asked, “What are you doing down here today?” “Investigating.” Vic frowned. “Investigating what?” A sadness softened Ian’s gaze and a hint of desperation sank into his tone. “I am looking for Rina.”

“Wisdom is earned, Ian, oftentimes the hard way and even more commonly with advanced age. If you can gain wisdom while still young, it can be a powerful asset.”
