“Life should imitate romance literature far more often.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“No matter what happens in public—no matter what—don’t doubt that I love you and care about your welfare . . . as much as I am able.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“It's always possible for human beings to spoil their own peace of mind”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Do you sometimes wish you could fast-forward a week? You know something bad's coming up, and you know you'll get through it, but the prospect just makes you feel sick. I worried for about thirty minutes, and though I knew there was no point in doing so, I could feel my anxiety twisting me up in a knot.

'Bullshit,' I told myself stoutly. 'This is utter bullshit.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Maybe I felt like I'd come so close to forever-death that I'd better step back and take a look at my life. Maybe I didn't like a lot of what I'd done with it so far.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“But I also knew that if he turned away from me at this moment, somehow I would survive that, and I would find a way to flourish like the yard that still bloomed and grew around my family home.

I'm Sookie Stackhouse. I belong here.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“If weeds could flourish with such vigor, may I could, too.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Experience had taught me it's better to be wary and feel ridiculous than to get conked on the head, or abducted, or whatever the enemy plan of the day might be.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Just what I needed, another psycho bitch after me. Hadn't the Weres pretty much cornered that market?”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Even witches sing the blues,”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“In books, the hero was gone after the big blowup. He didn’t stick around in the vicinity doing mysterious shit, sending messages to the heroine by a third party. He hauled his ass into oblivion. And that was the way things should be, as far as I was concerned. Life should imitate romance literature far more often.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Nothing is ever clear-cut in Bon Temps. What passes for truth is only a convenient lie. What passes for justice is more spilled blood. And what passes for love is never enough...”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Your life was not right when you were actually surprised that someone didn't want to kill you.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“There was a part of me that recognized . . . Oh, this sounds like the worst self-serving bullshit. There was a part of me that kept insisting that I was a big bad supe and born to be a lone shifter, and the women I wanted had to be as wild and antisocial as that stupid picture I had of myself.” “And now you feel you are . . . ?” “I feel I’m a man. A man who’s a shifter, too,” he said. “I think I’m ready to begin a relationship . . . a partnership . . . with someone I respect and admire.” “Rather than . . . ?” “Rather than another sociopathic bitch who just offers excitement and wild sex.” He looked at me hopefully. “Okay, I think you kind of took a wrong turn there.” “Uh-oh.” He thought about that. “Someone I respect and admire whom I also suspect is capable of exciting and wild sex,” he amended.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Is this true, Claude? You’re a fairy who’s a fairy?” Steve Newlin’s voice had gone super-ugly, and Johan Glassport had pulled his knife out again. “Uh-oh,” I said, just to alert Claude—since, after all, he was driving the vehicle—that there was dissension in his ranks. “Claude, your buddies are homophobes.” “What does that mean?” he asked me. “They hate men who like men.” Claude appeared perplexed, but I could see the distortion and hatred in the brains of the two men, and I knew that completely without intending to, I’d hit the perk button on their ethical coffeemaker.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Thanks, Pam. Karin, thanks for looking out for me.” I looked at the two women who were so like me and yet so completely different. Hesitantly, I said, “I know Eric intended to turn . . .” “Don’t talk about it,” Pam said. “We’re as close to friends as we can be, human and vampire. We’ll never be more, and I hope never less. You don’t want us to think too much about how it would be if you became like us.” I made a resolution then and there to never refer to Eric’s intention of having the three of us as his children.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Thank you, Pam,” I said. “Freyda banned me from Oklahoma, which is not important. But Felipe banned me from Fangtasia, so I won’t be visiting you at work. However, I’d love to see you from time to time. If you’re not too important now that you’re sheriff!” She inclined her head with an elaborately regal gesture, meant to amuse. “I’m sure we can meet somewhere in the middle,” she said. “You’re the only human friend I’ve ever had, and I would miss you a little if I never saw you again.” “Oh, keep up the warm and cuddly,” I said.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Sookie, take my advice,” Pam said. “I’m going to give it to you for free. This was not ‘nice’ of Eric. This was Eric protecting what used to be his, to show Freyda that he is loyal and protects his own. This is not a sentimental gesture.” Karin said, “We will do anything for Eric. We love him. But we know him better than anyone, and this calculation is one of Eric’s strengths.” “As a matter of fact,” I said, “I agree.” But I also knew that Eric liked to kill two birds with one stone. I thought the truth lay somewhere in between.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Mr. Cataliades, who’d had more years than I to study language (both body and spoken), said, “Miss Pam, do we have reason to congratulate you?” Pam closed her eyes in contentment, like a lovely blond cat. “You do,” she said, and a tiny smile curved her lips. Karin smiled, too, more broadly. It took a minute for me to get it. “You’re the sheriff now, Pam?” “I am,” she said, opening her eyes, her smile growing. “Felipe saw reason. Plus, it was on Eric’s wish list. But a wish list . . . Felipe didn’t have to honor it.” “Eric left a wish list.” I was trying not to feel sorry for Eric, going to a strange territory with a strange queen, without his trusty henchwoman at his side. “I think Bill told you about a few of his conditions,” Pam said, and her voice was neutral. “He had a few wishes he expressed to Freyda in return for signing a two-hundred-year marriage contract instead of the customary one hundred.” “I would be . . . interested . . . to hear what else was on it. The list.” “On the selfish side, he told Sam that he could not tell you that Sam had actually been the moving force behind bailing you out. On the less selfish side, he made it an absolute condition of his marrying Freyda that you never be harmed by any vampire. Not harassed, not tasted, not killed, not made a servant.” “That was thoughtful,” I said. In fact, that changed my whole future. And it wiped out the bitterness I’d begun to feel toward a man I’d loved a lot.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“I just don’t know what to do with him now.” Pam said, “Kill him. He is your enemy, and he wants to kill you.” This sounded pretty funny coming from someone who was wearing flowered crops and a teal T-shirt. Diantha nodded vigorously in wholehearted agreement. “Pam, I just can’t.” Pam shook her head at my weakness. Karin said, “Sister Pam, we could take him with us and . . . think about a solution.” Okay, I knew that was a euphemism for “get him out of sight and kill him.” “You can’t wipe his memory?” I said hopefully. “No,” Karin said. “He has no soul.” It was news to me that you couldn’t put the whammy on a soulless person, but then, it had never come up before. I hoped it would never come up again.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Yes, here was a call from Mr. Cataliades. “Sookie,” he said in his rich voice. “When we returned and found you had been shot, we knew we had to search farther afield. Copley Carmichael has vanished, but we are on the trail of other game. I truly think you take the prize for having more people wanting to kill you than anyone I’ve ever known. I’m only trying to get to them first. But it’s fun, in a way.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“We sat in the living room, me curled up on the couch, Bill in the armchair opposite. He smiled at me. “You’re cheerful,” I observed. “I’m about to do something that gives me intense pleasure,” he said. Huh. “Okay, have at it,” I said. “Do you remember what Eric did to me in New Orleans?” he said, and nothing could have surprised me more. “You mean, what Eric did to us? By telling me that instead of you being spontaneously smitten with me, you were ordered to seduce me?” It had hurt then. It hurt now. Of course, not as badly. “Yes, exactly,” Bill said. “And I’m not ever going to explain again, since we’ve said all this out loud and in our heads so many times. Even though I can’t read minds, like you can, I know that.” I nodded. “We’ll take all that as done.” “That is why it gives me intense pleasure to tell you, now, what Eric has done to Sam.” All right! This was what I had waited to discover. I leaned forward. “Do tell,” I said.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Sam came in silently. His hand found mine. “You gonna tell me what’s wrong?” I whispered. I was fading into sleep. “I can’t,” he said. “But I couldn’t stay away when I heard you got shot.” And then Eric was behind him. My hand must have jerked, because Sam’s tightened around it. I could tell from his face that he knew Eric was there. “Heard you were going,” I said, with an effort. “Yes, very soon. How are you? Do you want me to heal you?” I couldn’t interpret his voice or the fact that he was here. I was too exhausted to try. “No, Eric,” I said, and I only sounded flat. I just couldn’t find nice words. “Good-bye. We need to let go of each other. I can’t do this anymore.” Eric glared at Sam. “What are you doing here?” he asked. “Sam came because I was shot, Eric. That’s what friends do,” I said. Each word was a labor to enunciate. Sam didn’t turn to Eric, didn’t look him in the eye. I held on to his hand so I wouldn’t drift away. Eric spoke once again. “I will not release you.” I frowned. He seemed to be speaking to Sam. Then he walked out of the hospital room.”

“I’d never imagined feeling this way, but I couldn’t handle this emotional jerking around. I’d start to feel okay, then I’d get poked in the sore spot, like taking a scab off my knee when I was a kid. In books, the hero was gone after the big blowup. He didn’t stick around in the vicinity doing mysterious shit, sending messages to the heroine by a third party. He hauled his ass into oblivion. And that was the way things should be, as far as I was concerned. Life should imitate romance literature far more often.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“I come here to tell you Eric is leaving tomorrow night,” he said. “He thought you should know. Plus, he left some shit at your place. He wants it back.” I stood very still for a long moment, feeling the finality of it hit my heart. “Okay, then,” I said. “I do have some stuff of his in my closet. I’ll send it—where? Though I don’t suppose they are things he’ll miss.” I tried to not add any layers of meaning to that.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“I don’t know where they thought she’d come from, since everyone in the bar knew my entire family history, but I guess since I’d introduced the fairy Dermot (a dead ringer for Jason) as my cousin from Florida, and I’d said Claude was from the wrong side of the blanket, my townspeople figured the Stackhouses were simply unpredictable.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“I came to see that despite the fact that I’d dated vampires, I had a good reputation in many respects. I was reliable and cheerful and hardworking, and with the people of Bon Temps that counted an awful lot. I put flowers on my family’s graves every holiday and on the anniversary of their deaths.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“Amelia was researching spells to make Arlene’s mysterious male friends talk, if we could find them. I had a moment of longing for Pam. She could make anybody talk, no spell involved, unless you considered vamp hypnosis a spell. Pam would rather beat it out of them, anyway.”
Charlaine Harris, Dead Ever After
“It’s always possible for human beings to spoil their own peace of mind, and I did a good job of it that night. Despite the friends who had shown up with no expectation of reward, the friends who’d come a long way to help me, I worried about the friend who hadn’t tried. I just couldn’t figure Sam out any more than I could figure out why Eric had posted my bail when I was no longer his wife, or even his girlfriend. I was sure he’d had some reason for doing me that large good turn. Does it sound like I was labeling Eric as ungenerous, uncaring? In some respects, and to some people, he was never those things. But he was a practical vampire, and he was a vampire about to become the consort of a true queen. Since dismissing me as his wife apparently was one of Freyda’s conditions for marrying Eric (and frankly, I could sure understand that), I couldn’t imagine her accepting Eric’s decision to put up an awfully large amount of money to secure my freedom. Maybe that had been part of some negotiation? “If you’ll let me bail out my former wife, I’ll take a decreased allowance for a year,” or something like that. (For all I knew, they negotiated how many times they would have sex.) And I had the most depressing mental image of the beautiful Freyda and my Eric . . . my former Eric. Somewhere in the midst of wandering through a mental maze, I fell asleep.”

“I have some things to tell all of you,” Mr. Cataliades said. “And later, some things to tell Sookie individually . . . but now I have to tell you what I’ve witnessed and suspected.” This sounded so ominous that we all turned our attention to the part-demon. “I’d heard that there was a devil in New Orleans,” he said. “The Devil? Or a devil?” Amelia asked. “What an excellent question,” Mr. Cataliades said. “In fact, a devil. The Devil himself seldom makes a personal appearance. You can imagine the crowds.” None of us knew quite what to say, so perhaps we couldn’t.”
