Earlier, Ibn al-Jawzī — may Allah have mercy on him — wrote his pioneering work, Talbīs Iblīs (The Devil's Deception), critiquing knowledge and the scholars. After him, the Imām Shams al-Dīn al-Dhahabī authored his beneficial book, Zaghl al-ʿIlm wa al-Ṭalab (The Alloy of Knowledge and Its Pursuit), in which he critiqued the schools of fiqh and the jurists.

Then the Shaykh and Imām Aḥmad Zarrūq al-Qāsī—described as the muḥtasib of the Ṣūfīs—authored his concise treatise ʿUddat al-Murīd al-Ṣādiq (Provision of the Truthful Seeker), critiquing the ecstatic utterances of Sufism and the innovations of certain Ṣūfīs, while exposing their pedagogical (tarbawī) errors. Yet he himself was one of them—indeed, one of their foremost shaykhs—and for that reason he came to be known as their "Muḥtasib."
