“This is America. We’re entitled to our opinions.”
“Wrong. This is Texas. And my opinion is the only one that counts.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“I love you, Meg. I want to
marry you. I want to sleep with you every night, make love with you, have kids. I want to fight together and
work together and—just be together. Now are you going to keep standing there, staring at me, or could
you put me out of my misery and say you still love me, at least a little?”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“You never get mad,” she said when their server left the table. “Except at me.”
“That’s not true,” he said tightly. “Torie can get me going.”
“Torie doesn’t count. You were obviously her mother in a previous life.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“I sure do miss that woman. Smart. Funny. Sweet. She never gave me a moment's trouble."

Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“He sounds like Jesus. Except rich and sexy.”
“Watch it, Meg. In this town joking about Jesus could get you shot. You’ve never seen so many of the faithful who’re armed.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“Meg! I love you! I want to marry you!"
"That's weird," she said without stopping. "Only six weeks ago, you were telling me all about how Lucy broke your heart."
"I was wrong. Lucy broke my brain.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“Chasing after a guy who’s not interested in you will rip the hell out of your self-respect. Better to face facts now because the longer you put it off, the harder it’ll be.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“You lit into me last night. You said what I did was stupid.
- That's what my head said. But my heart... My stupid heart... Her voice broke. It was singing.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“It must be hard being you,” she said. “Mr. Perfect on the outside. Dr. Evil on the inside.”

“It’s not that hard. The rest of the world isn’t as insightful as you.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“He could deal with his guilt all by himself. Guilt didn't add up to love, an emotion she was done with forever.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“Okay, so I'll admit I'm curious. Big deal. We both know what that leads to. Dead cat.”

“Meg! I love you! I want to marry you!”

“That’s weird,” she said without stopping. “Only six weeks ago, you were telling me all about how Lucy broke your heart.”

“I was wrong. Lucy broke my brain.”

That finally stopped her. “Your brain?” She looked back at him.

“That’s right,” he said more quietly. “When Lucy ran out on me, she broke my brain. But when you left . . .” To his dismay, his voice cracked. “When you left, you broke my heart.”

He finally had her full attention, not that she looked at all dreamy-eyed or even close to being ready to throw herself into his arms, but at least she was listening.

He collapsed the umbrella, took a step forward, then stopped himself. “Lucy and I fit together so perfectly in my head. We had everything in common, and what she did made no sense. I had the whole town lining up feeling sorry for me, and I was damned if I was going to let anybody know how miserable I was. I—I couldn’t get my bearings. And there you were in the middle of it, this beautiful thorn in my side, making me “feel like myself again. Except . . .” He hunched his shoulders, and a trickle of rainwater ran down his collar. “Sometimes logic can be an enemy. If I was so wrong about Lucy, how could I trust the way I felt about you?”

She stood there, not saying a word, just listening.

“I wish I could say I realized how much I loved you as soon as you left town, but I was too busy being mad at you for bailing on me. I don’t have a lot of practice being mad, so it took me a while to understand that the person I was really mad at was myself. I was so pigheaded and stupid. And afraid. Everything has always come so easy for me, but nothing about you was easy. The things you made me feel. The way you forced me to look at myself.” He could barely breathe. “I love you, Meg. I want to marry you. I want to sleep with you every night, make love with you, have kids. I want to fight together and work together and—just be together. Now are you going to keep standing there, staring at me, or could you put “me out of my misery and say you still love me, at least a little?”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“I'll take care of my mother," he said grimly. "I love her, but she doesn't run my life."
"Yeah, that's what we all say. You. Me. Lucy." She stabbed the stick into the dirt. "These are powerful women. They're sane, they're smart, they rule their worlds, and they love us ferociously. A potent combination that makes it touch to pretend they're normal mothers.”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“He should have seen this coming, but he hadn't. Of course she wouldn't want to move back to Wynette after everything that had happened to her there. But what about his family, his friends, his roots, which stretched so deep into that rocky soil he'd become part of it?”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible

Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“It’s me, not you.” She turned to him, urging him with her eyes to go along with her. “Everybody else thinks you’re fabulous, so it has to be me, right? Nobody else seems to find you just a little bit . . . creepy.”

He cocked an eyebrow.

Francesca swelled up in her chair. “Did you just call my son ‘creepy’?”

Ted spooned up another bite of chocolate, interested in what else she’d come up with. He wasn’t going to help at all. She wanted to kiss him, yell at him. Instead, she returned her attention to the women.

“Be honest.” Her voice gained strength with the rightness of what she was doing. “You all know what I mean. The way the birds start to sing when he walks outside. That’s creepy, right? And those halos that keep popping up around his head?”
Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Call Me Irresistible
“Come on, Ted. I’m not exactly the type to be a rich man’s bimbo.”

“That’s true.” A world of compassion softened his voice. “Bimbos are generally good-hearted women who are pleasant to be around.”

“Spoken from experience, I’m sure. By the way, you may be God Almighty on the golf course, but you’re a lousy dancer. Let me lead.”
