The genre of this book is action. As of now Cracker is fighting in the Vietnam war. After beeing taken away from his previous owner Willie, Cracker make a new friend, his name is Rick. Rick is fighting alongside Cracker in the war and they soon become best friends. Cracker is doing outstanding and is now being called the best dog in Vietnam. Many battles and training is going on now that relates to war.

The conflict of this book is when a boy and his dog are getting spereated. The dogs name is Cracker and him and his owner have formed a strong bond which is now soon to he broken. The boy is extremely sad but knows the dog will serve in Vietnam. He knows he and his dog are getting separated for a good cause which comforts him a little bit. He sits on his bed looking out his window as the dog gets taken from him.
